catchthebear 2019

Hello everyone.

It's my first time posting a grow log here, so if I do something wrong please yell at me.

I finally had time to put together a list of all the peppers I have started this year.  I also relabeled every plant with giant labels using a grease pencil.   I'm tired of running into mystery plants halfway through the season!

It's a busy time of year at work for me, but things are finally starting to slow down a hair.

Still haven't pushed my babies out of the nest yet.  Had some hail a couple days ago that scared me off putting them out.  Maybe next week. :)

I plan to put about half of them in the ground and the other half in pots.  Would like to be able to easily isolate certain varieties when they start flowering.

I've also decided that this is my last year using the double cup method.  Big pain in the ass.

Still looking for some Tovarii seeds too. Don't intend to start any more seeds this year, but hope to run across some before next season.

Hope everyone has a good season ahead.
Cheers,
Matt

Thanks for the welcome and kind words, Paul :)

Took a short video of this garden.  It's gonna be a jungle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylRf_we45ig

That is no exaggeration, 'Bear! That is a lot of plants.
I guess some of those are in #1 nursery pots?

Bummer about the Google communities shut down.
I signed up for his group just before it went down
Maybe Khang should join THP!

Yeah, I was bummed about losing that place.  Mainly posted over there before migrating here.

I think a majority are 2 gallon pots?  Not completely sure.  I saved them from previous landscaping jobs I had helped out on.  There were shrubs in them before.  Nice thick plastic.  I'm sure my plants could definitely handle bigger pots, but these were free!

I wish there was one place for pepper lovers - I joined here many years ago as a fan of hot sauce but only started growing this year. The former PLC is now in three difference places (MeWe, Reddit and Facebook), none of which is a forum which is my preferred format.

Matt, why do you have so many varieties on the boil? Just for fun/the challenge or are the differences pronounced enough that you prefer eating one over another in specific situations?

I agree about the format, Siv. I had a hard time following
people on the PLC. Same with Pepper Guru's Facebook
community. It's so nice just to have an index where you
can find your friend's grow logs easily.

I got them from Khang back when G+ was still around.

If you have any to spare at the end of the season I would be interested in trading for some of the things I have, you seem to have a ton already so not sure if it's worth it to you, but I could send you a list later.

Of those 3 I prefer Reddit the most (and have posted in /r/hotpeppers quite a few times).

Why so many varieties? Because I have no self-control and I am not good at moderation. lol  (And I do find it fun.)

I'm tossing the idea around of selling seeds, but I know many folks are not interested in open pollinated seeds. May give it a try in the fall and see if it's something worth pursuing.

If there was a simple, inexpensive, and not time consuming way to isolate plants I'd be all for trying.  Saving all those seeds and keeping things organized is already something that would be pretty time consuming as is.  And I already have a full time job.

Sure thing. Holler at me when ya do.  I just stuck those two plants in the ground yesterday

Just typing that list of peppers you have must have taken you all day!
What do you plan to do with all those peppers/plants?
Lol. I wrote them out by hand first, going through my plants.  That took a few hours.
k5SutOk.jpg

Typing them up took about 15/20 minutes.  My mom was a high school typing teacher, so I'm fairly quick.

What do you plan to do with all those peppers/plants?
Sauce, jams, pickles, flakes, powders, etc.  Also gonna save all the seeds and see how ambitious I'm feeling late summer / early fall.

I plan to send a bunch of pods to a guy who reviews weird fruit (and peppers) too.  You can check out last year's video here if you're so inclined: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAIwMYoMpKE

Your list makes my head hurt. How many? I can't count that high ;)

Yeah, that is one of the most insane lists of pepper
varieties I have seen

Seriously, there are more than a few that I have
never even heard of!

I can hardly wait to see pics of some of these.
It will take you a week to post pics of that
many peppers!

Yeah! Having only grown a handful of these varieties before, I'm very excited to see them as well.  Really wish I had been this thorough the past couple years keeping a record of everything.

Starting to see lots of flowers and unripe peppers out there.  And so far I haven't lost any plants after the move outside (knock on wood).

Nothing too interesting to share pepper-wise at the moment, but I noticed I had flowers on both my Stick tomato and my Kangaroo Apple plants today.  Don't think there's anything special about the taste of the Stick tomato. Just looks very strange. And I've heard Kangaroo Apples described as marginally edible, but I guess we'll find out shortly.

Yep, your list of peppers is impressive. Yep, cats ain't dumb. BUT...

Did y'all look at this pic? Man, there's so much shit from so many places...damn!

....and the bugs. Look at the size of those suckers! And the bat, and the frogs at the Corona bar, and...

Wow. Now there's some stories to be told here!

Not sure what I like doing more.  Growing peppers or collecting shit. Ha!
