greenhouse check out this greenhouse!

Its that dual layer stuff right?

I couldn't say. It a friend of ours's GH. It looked to me like a single thick sheet of something, could be double-layer with smooth on top and ribbed underneath.

Chili Monsta, he has planter boxes up on the wall with trailing plants, trellises...everything except a hot tub....which might be in there by the end of fall!!!

That greenhouse is so full of win it's ridiculous. I would be keeping some dwarf citrus and avocado trees, an olive tree or two, and a ton of chiles and tomatoes.

AB, yea it's pretty sweet! I think he plans on growing all their own fresh veggies all through the winter.

Do avocado trees need 2 trees for pollination, or will one tree produce fruit? I have an avocado plant we started from the pit that I'd give to him if it would produce. Also, I seem to remember something about avocado trees from the pit are sterile? Anyone know anything about that?

They don't need 2 trees 1 will be fine to pollinate (the flowers open at different times of the day once as a male and once as a female dependent on species).

Also pits will grow (they aren't sterile) although they may not produce as well as the parent tree.

We had an amazing avocado tree in one of my old places in New Zealand and I still kick myself that I never took a cutting from it it produced amazing tasting buttery/nutty fruit and a lot of them and this was in a place with some of the lowest sunshine hours out of major centres in the country.

Yeah there are Type A and Type B avocados, from Wikipedia:

There are two flowering types, "A" and "B". "A" cultivar flowers open as female on the morning of the first day and close in late morning or early afternoon. Then they open as male in the afternoon of the second day. "B" varieties open as female on the afternoon of the first day, close in late afternoon and reopen as male the following morning.

I've read that avocado trees from seed are really unpredictable when it comes to the fruit, it could be nothing like the parent, or fruit very poorly, etc. They take many years to fruit as well. I don't think any of the dwarf varieties fruit very well like dwarf citrus or other dwarf trees though. Avocados are probably just a pipe dream for me though. :(

I really need to get a greenhouse like that though. I would have it full in no time. There are so many tropical or sub tropical fruits I want to grow that I can't because of my stupid climate. :mope: I do have dwarf Meyer Lemon, Kumquat, Fig trees though. There are so many others I want to grow though, bhudda's hand citron, mangoes, lychee, etc.

But anyway, I'll stop thread hijacking now. I should probably just move to southern Florida. :o

Thanks Trippa and AvonB,

that's cool about the male/female morning/night flowering thing. It might be worth a go to try and grow this plant then.

And Barksdale, sounds like you do need to move SOUTH! All them tropics are enough to fill a greenhouse all their own, not including the chiles!

:)
