vendor ChilePlants Dot Com

I orders a few plants this year from them. Overall it was a good experience but not without a couple bumps in the road.

Lemon Drop
Spot on perfect with great yield, nice flavor and very healthy plants. They did well in the ground and in a pot. I still got a ton of green pods and a couple quart bags or ripe. Very highly recommend this plant.

Serrano
PERFECT serrano. Plants are tiny but have done very well in pots. Very consistent heat level. Turn red fairly quickly. I got 4 and all of them have been little work horses. Ive still got plenty of green pods and im still getting blooms....Highly recommend.

Pepperoncini
Well this one was a hate turned to love. I did not get what i ordered. They sent a Lombardo pepperoncini instead. Plant looked like hell all season. It still looks like hell but has produced many nice pods. I wasnt thrilled about the switch until i tasted them. Oh yeah nice and even better pickled. Just a touch of heat. I would say a tiny bit more than the Golden Greek pepperoncini. Almost a black pepper type of heat instead of a chile pepper heat.

Big Jim
This was the Big Let Down of the bunch. It was not even close to a Big Jim. Im still not exactly sure what plant they sent. Its a very thin walled Anaheim type. Dark green turning to dark red very slowly. Plenty of pods and the plant looks great. Not much flavor but does get better stirfried with some onions. Almost no heat but oddly some came through when stirfried. I thought that was odd.

Early jalapeno
Great flavor but poor yield. My 2 plants never did look that great. Very tiny and sickly looking. I am still getting some pods from them. Really nice and hot for a jalapeno. Gunna try them again next year in a different soil mix just because they tasted so good. Other peppers right next to them did just fine so maybe it was just a fluke.

No problems in shipping or billing. I would have liked better communication in switches but to be fair i did not specify any alternates. I will be ordering from them again and i will make sure to specify alternates. They have a great selection of plants for a fairly reasonable price.

I want to try their:
Beni Highlands
Biker Billy Hybrid
Aji Dulce #2
Aji Habanero
Scotch Bonnet Yellow

I have ordered from ChilePlants.com ever since I started growing hot peppers. Their ordering process does say they will make substitutions if a particular variety ends up unavailable at shipping time. However, they also give you two options where you can choose how the substitutions are made - either give them a specific list or tell them to double-up on varieties already in your order. I have used both of these approaches with past orders and have gotten exactly what I expected each time a substitution needed to be made (substitutions are not always needed.) Try that next time though, as you've expereinced, letting them choose a substitution may give you an intro to a pepper you didn't think of trying but might like.

Regarding your early jalapeno, if it arrived sickly looking, you should contact them immediately upon receipt. Per their website, you should include a picture of the plant in question along with your inquiry. They are VERY good about replacing plants, even though they cannot control how the shipper handles them. Just follow their published procedures - they are anxious that you are happy with your purchase.

Another thought.... Chile plants, in some ways, are just like people - no two are exactly alike. I have 6 Aji Panca plants and I solely container-grow. Five of them are out in full sun all day and are very happy with that arrangement. The sixth, however, I dubbed "drama queen" because it can't take that much sun. Once I moved it to a spot where it got more shade, however, it flourished. I have one other plant (a different variety) that is also in the more-shady spot for the same reason. Both became abundant producers, though I was skeptical at first.

Also, regarding the substitutions - they DO list them on the packing slip. Additionally, you can log into your account on their website and see them there if you discarded the packing slip without reading it.

The Big Jims i received were labeled as Big Jims. If you are going to substitute, it would be nice to know the actual plant you sent. I can see it with the pepperoncini to some extent. A jar of pickled Lombardos is often just labeled pepperoncini. A jar of Golden Greeks are just called pepperoncini too. I cant find any email from them about a substitution either.

I had to look up both on their site and try to find a match. The Lombardo was easy but i cant find one that fits this mystery Anaheim type. The plant is doing great. My only real complaint is lack of flavor. They are about as bland as bland gets with a pepper.

In large retail stores, I will often ask if something not on the shelf is in stock.  They check the computer and are baffled because inventory says it is in stock.  Now imagine the same inventory challenge with a product that sometimes dies.  I image its a huge challenge to keep the online inventory accurate.

Its not a question of inventory accuracy. It was a simple lack of communication and labeling a product incorrectly. What i received was labeled Big Jim and it was not.

Imagine ordering a tenderloin filet and on your plate sits an eye of round.

Just to be clear, i don't want this review to sound too harsh. Overall i am happy with my first purchase from them. I will be ordering from them again and i will make sure to do my part communicating in the future.

I have had multiple orders from them and have been pleased. Even when they accidentally sent me a plant I didn't order, after I notified them they sent out the correct plant the very next week. That has only happened once to me and as I stated previously I really enjoy their service and selection!!!

I see you mentioned the Beni Highlands and I did get that plant from CCN this year and it grew like gangbusters!!!! VERY prolific plant as far as pod production goes.

I'm already waiting to see what other new varieties they will have listed in 2017 ;)

I ordered sengal's form them this year since I had a bad year this season.
They were ether crossed or off phenos if crossed I think it was with Jamaican Reds Habaneros.
It was there last shipment before they closed an I did give them the option to replace if they didn't have any but they was all labeled Sengal .
Whatever the case may be they were big strong plants adjusted well an was prolific .
The heat was that of a scotch bonnet & the flavor was slightly sweet & fruity some floral but blended well an grassy that also blended well

My Pics

Overall while it was not the pheno I wanted it saved me till next season.
The Jim Duffy plants where small an did not adjust well an had to be pulled .
I was really down how things had gone this season so ccn lifted my spirit.
I was very happy with ccn even saved seed form some pods mistakes happen & that is not always a bad thing
