ChilliCrosser Crosses

I've opted to keep details of my crossing projects in this dedicated thread rather than include it in my 2021 Glog

Edited this post to summarise what crosses I've got and where they are at, I will try and keep it current. Dates in status column reflect when I've updated the information not when the cross was actually made. I've not included every historic cross I've ever made and ignores anything where I haven't got at least F1 seeds unless I thought it was useful to record. Information might be useful to someone at some point.
ChilliCrosser CrossCurrent Status
X001 : Bolivian Rainbow x Cheiro Roxa (C.Annuum x C.Chinense)🅿️16/8/21: F1 seeds, not grown on yet.
X002 : Fijian Bongo x Cheiro Roxa (C.Chinense x C.Chinense)❌16/8/21: Only had a single F1 seed even though this was an intraspecific, strange result and the seed didn't germinate. End of cross project.
X003 : Brazilian Starfish Red x [CGN21500 x 7 Pot Barrackpore] (C.Baccatum x C.Chinense)🤞 🌱 16/8/21: Had plenty of F1 seeds from the original F0 pods. First attempt to grow an F1 was ended when weather finished off the plant before any fruiting. Currently growing four F1 plants outdoors in the 2021 season. All looking healthy but concerned I've not seen any fruit setting yet. Possibly sterile but reserving judgement until the end of the season.
X004 : Tasmanian Habanero x Giant White Habanero (C.Chinense x C.Chinense)🌱🌶️16/8/21: Growing F2 plants, some initial pods setting.
X005 : Fidalgo Roxa x Giant White Habanero (C.Chinense x C.Chinense)🌱16/8/21: Growing F2 plants, no pods set yet.
X006 : Fidalgo Roxa x Fijian Bongo (C.Chinense x C.Chinense)🌱🌶️16/8/21: Growing F2 plants, some initial pods setting.
X007 : Fijian Bongo x Aji Jobito (C.Chinense x C.Chinense)🌱🌶️16/8/21: Growing F2 plants, some initial pods setting.
X008 : Fijian Bongo x Brazilian Starfish Yellow (C.Chinense x C.Baccatum)🅿️16/8/21: F1 seeds.
X009 : Brazilian Starfish Yellow x C.Flexuosum (C.Baccatum x C.Flexuosum)❌16/8/21: Very small F0 pod set but zero F1 seeds. Inside of pod looked healthy. Lack of F1 seeds could have been due to pod size. One for me to try again at some point I think.
X010 : Brazilian Starfish Yellow x [CGN21500 x Grao De Bode] (C.Baccatum x C.Chinense)❌16/8/21: Had 4 F1 seeds from a single F0 pod, only 1 germinated. F1 plant taken out by a storm. End of cross project.
X011 : Giant White Habanero x Fijian Bongo (C.Chinense x C.Chinense) 🤩🌱🌶️16/8/21: Summary of wide range of phenotypes from F2 here. Currently have F3 seeds for all phenotypes and have been growing a batch of F3 plants for the red phenotypes outdoors this season, waiting on F3 pods from these so hope to have F4 seeds this year. Most likely to also grow forward the Apricot Peach phenos to stabilise.
X012 : Brazilian Starfish Yellow x Tasmanian Habanero (C.Baccatum x C.Chinense)❌16/8/21: Had an F0 pod but no F1 seeds. End of cross project.
X013 : White Bhut Jolokia JW x Variegated Jalapeno (C.Chinense x C.Annuum)🅿️16/8/21: F1 seeds, not grown on yet.
X014 : White Bhut Jolokia JW x Sweet Apple Kambe (C.Chinense x C.Annuum)🅿️16/8/21: Single F1 seed, not grown on yet.

X016 : White Bhut Jolokia JW x Brazilian Starfish Red (C.Chinense x C.Baccatum)❌16/8/21: Had 2 F1 seeds from a small F0 pod, both failed to germinate. End of cross project.
X017 : White Bhut Jolokia JW x Sugar Rush Stripey (C.Chinense x C.Baccatum)❌16/8/21: Had 2 F1 seeds from a small F0 pod, both failed to germinate. End of cross project.
X018 : Brazilian Starfish Red x Peppacream (C.Baccatum x C.Baccatum)⭐🌱🌶️16/8/21: Started as an accidental cross. Starting to get ripe F1 pods with F2 seeds. Super tasty!
X019 : Clavo Peach x Sugar Rush Stripey (C.Chinense x C.Baccatum)🤞16/8/21: Had 3 F0 pods, each with healthy looking F1 seeds. Started germination for some F1 seeds from each of the F0 pods on 14/8/21, waiting to see if viable.
X020 : Scarlett's Chilli x Indian Chilli Bullet (C.Annuum x C.Annuum)🅿️16/8/21: F1 seeds, not grown on yet.
X021 : Sugar Rush Stripey x White Bhut Jolokia JW (C.Baccatum x C.Chinense)🤞16/8/21: First F0 pod was unhealthy inside, only 1 F1 seed formed which still looked non-viable, tried to germinate it anyway but no surprises when it failed. Have another F0 pod ripening, waiting to see if that's any better.
X022 : Clavo Peach x Brazilian Starfish Yellow (C.Chinense x C.Baccatum)🅿️16/8/21: F1 seeds, not grown on yet.
X023 : [BOC x Aji Pineapple] x Sugar Rush Stripey ([C.Chinense x C.Baccatum] x C.Baccatum)🅿️16/8/21: F1 seeds, not grown on yet.

FAQs
- Why so many crosses? Please check my username.

- Seriously, why so many crosses? I like to have plenty of F1 seeds available to pick from at the start of a growing cycle. For me personally it stops me wishing I'd made some more crosses 6 months ago and when a particular cross project hits a dead end or doesn't look interesting I have something else I can quickly switch to. You'll see quite a few interspecific crosses in my list, they are often doomed to failure so having a Plan B helps.

- Are you attempting to stabilise all of these? No, only ones which head in a direction I like.

- How many plants do you grow? 90% of my crosses are started on indoor plants grown in mini-hydro kratky jars, 240ml/8oz. Plants are kept really small and I typically only get one or two F0 pods to get F1 seeds from. So far I've normally grown two F1 plants if possible, plant numbers in subsequent generations depend on how much space I have available in each growing cycle.

- Isn't it better to just focus on a single cross? If you like all your eggs in one basket and you're not concerned with sequentially growing projects over a very long time period then yes. This is just a hobby for me so I like to keep it varied and fun whilst still attempting to stabilise my favourites.

- Why haven't you given your crosses silly names? That time will come as is traditional in the chilli pepper world. I likely won't bother until I have something vaguely stable and predictable, possibly F4 onwards.

A summary of my live projects where I'm growing plants as of June 2021 are:
  • X003 : Brazilian Starfish Red x [CGN21500 x 7 Pot Barrackpore] (C.Baccatum x C.Chinense)
  • X004 : Tasmanian Habanero x Giant White Habanero (C.Chinense x C.Chinense)
  • X005 : Fidalgo Roxa x Giant White Habanero (C.Chinense x C.Chinense)
  • X006 : Fidalgo Roxa x Fijian Bongo (C.Chinense x C.Chinense)
  • X007 : Fijian Bongo x Aji Jobito (C.Chinense x C.Chinense)
  • X011 : Giant White Habanero x Fijian Bongo (C.Chinense x C.Chinense)

More details of where I'm at with generations, phenotypes, plants and photos in subsequent posts on this thread. Everything is early on and ranges from F1 to F3. I've also attempted some new crosses already this season so will also mention those.

Example of going mad on crossing attempts on small kratky plants indoors. Excuse its poor condition, first year I've had aphids discover my indoor plants and this has been getting the full soap and neem treatment.

Gone ahead and chanced my luck on the very limited number of F1 seeds I got from some of the crosses on this mother plant. Trying F1 germination for:
  • X016 - White Bhut Jolokia JW (C.Chinense) x Brazilian Starfish Red (C.Baccatum)
  • X017 - White Bhut Jolokia JW (C.Chinense) x Sugar Rush Stripey (C.Baccatum)
Only 2 intact F1 seeds for each of these, harvested a few days ago, both Chinense x Baccatum..............what can go wrong

Catching up on documenting some more cross attempts that are in progress this year.

Brazilian Starfish Yellow x Sugar Rush Stripey, also have the reciprocal in progress

Naga Smooky Rainbow x Antep Aci Dolma

Hawaiian Sweet Red x Antep Aci Dolma

Indian Chilli Bullet x Antep Aci Dolma, trying some crosses this year with clustering varieties

The one I've been looking forward most to attempting this year, another clustering variety. Pimenta Moranga Peach x Sugar Rush Stripey

Finally a strange one. I planted a few Brazilian Starfish Red this year from previously harvested seeds. In this pot I put two plants, one is from seeds I isolated the other is from seeds I collected from non-isolated pods.  The isolated plant looks on pheno, the other is showing an immature pod colour that I've not seen on the Starfish Red before so I'm currently leaning to an accidental cross.  I need to check my growing notes from previous seasons but I am 90%+ confident I know what Baccatum it crossed with, will confirm when I've checked. I'm 100% confident there were no seed mix ups. To add more to the mix I'd already made a cross attempt on this plant which has set.

For the moment I'll call it [Brazilian Starfish Red x TBC] x [BOC x Aji Pineapple]!

My attempt to get the unique starfish flavour profile into something else.  I also liked the purple blush on the red CGN21500 x 7 Pot Barrackpore pods so seeing if this can also be retained when crossing with another red. Grew an F1 plant last year but I didn't get pods as it was damaged during a bout of bad weather.

I still had some F1 seeds and started a couple more F1 plants growing this year. Risking no seeds or non-viable seeds as inter species but will see where it goes.

The green spots on the corolla often point towards baccatum. I'm curious to see where it will got to :)
Yes this F1 plant seems to be showing that characteristic although the colouring of the foliage on some plants is looking nearer the Chinense parent. Given the Baccatum was crossed with a Chinense cross which itself was likely not 100% stable then anything could happen.  I have 4 small F1 plants growing so will also look for any obvious differences across those. I started X003 in 2019 and lost the F1 plant last year. I had plenty of F1 seeds so with the 4 plants this year I'm really hoping to get some F2 seeds.  I don't mind if the F2 goes sterile or fails, as that risk goes with the territory when doing interspecific crosses, but would like to give F2 a run to see what type of variation occurs. I really like the Brazilian Starfish family, I have the red, yellow and orange growing again this year so will attempt to kick off a few more crossing attempts with various things.

X011 : Giant White Habanero x Fijian Bongo (C.Chinense x C.Chinense)

Attempted to get some of the sweetness from the Fijian Bongo into the Habanero parent. Secondary aim was to try and keep a chunky pod and some colour variation. So far this cross has given a nice mix of phenotypes in the F2's as shown below.

Another day, another colour on F2 phenotypes on my X011 cross!

This time a white pod from the same F2 plant that has been pushing pale lemon pods. This doesn't seem to be a ripening stage as I've kept the pale lemon pods for some time and they don't reach this white colour. The white pod has also never been pale lemon. Spliced together a side by side view of the main phenotypes I've obtained from the F2 including the reds.

For the record, failed to germinate either of these from the limited seeds I'd harvested.

X003 : Brazilian Starfish Red x [CGN21500 x 7 Pot Barrackpore] (C.Baccatum x C.Chinense)

Despite having four F1 plants growing, all looking healthy and flowering, starting to look like this cross could be sterile. The weather has not been favourable and most of my outdoor plants are way behind. I've not given up on these yet but I'm thinking this is more likely to fail than succeed right now. Really good looking dark stems on these.

X004 : Tasmanian Habanero x Giant White Habanero (C.Chinense x C.Chinense)

The Tasmanian Habanero has always given me high yields even on small plants. Crossed with something bigger and a different colour to see if I can generate one or more of:
  • same yield with larger pods
  • same yield but different non-red colours
Currently growing out a small number of F2 plants.
Some flowering and initial pod set on one of the F2s

X005 : Fidalgo Roxa x Giant White Habanero (C.Chinense x C.Chinense)

Aiming to retain the unripe and ripe colouration of the Fidalgo Roxa and the fruitiness in the taste whilst increasing the pod size. Would prefer to also keep the dark foliage of the roxa.

Currently growing out a small number of F2 plants.
No fruit set yet but some good looking flowers and stems on one of the F2s. Bias appears to be towards the Fidalgo Roxa on this plant.

X006 : Fidalgo Roxa x Fijian Bongo (C.Chinense x C.Chinense)

Aiming to blend the fruity and sweet flavour tones of these two varieties. Ideally with a pod size nearer the bongo than the roxa. If the flavour and pod size is there then I am less bothered about the colour.

Currently growing some F2 plants.
Initial pod on one of the F2s, not much colour change over the last 3 weeks so too soon to tell where this one is going. Looks similar to Fidalgo Roxa immature colours at this point but with a red father let's see.

X023 : [BOC x Aji Pineapple] x Sugar Rush Stripey ([C.Chinense x C.Baccatum] x C.Baccatum)

Thought I'd try starting this one as the mother already has some Baccatum in it so might increase chances of successfully crossing with a Baccatum father. I got an F0 pod but:
- still some green in the placenta despite leaving it on the plant for some time
- F1 seeds are not all great, some look viable though
- the mother appeared not to be self-fertile, I grew this as a mini-hydro kratky plant and this pod was the only one that set, of course this was manually pollinated

Will add to my F1 seed bank but likely won't be in a hurry to try growing this forward unless I have spare capacity to do so.

X022 : Clavo Peach x Brazilian Starfish Yellow (C.Chinense x C.Baccatum)

An opportunistic cross. I was growing the Clavo Peach as a partner for some of my planned Sugar Rush Stripey crossing attempts. I also have some starfish I'm using for some other planned crosses.

Adding to seed bank but will be near the top of my reserve list to try and germinate for an F1 plant to grow in the off-season once I see if my preferred crossing attempts get me some F1 seeds or not.

F0 pod and F1 seeds look fine.

X018 : Brazilian Starfish Red x Peppacream (C.Baccatum x C.Baccatum)

An accidental start to this one but I'm pretty excited about it!

Checked my previous growing notes to see if my memory was correct and I am highly confident that the father on this is the Peppacream from Chris Fowler. It was growing leaf-to-leaf with the Starfish and they were the only two plants growing in front of my house in the season I harvested these isolated and non-isolated seeds. Initial traits are 100% consistent with this also. This will therefore be an F1 plant.

Traits:
- Unlike Brazilian Starfish Red this starts with a white/cream immature pod, presumably from the Peppacream
- Pod shapes mixed, some rounder like the Peppacream but most have an underside showing indications of the starfish
- Only harvested one ripe pod so far but this was thick walled, very juicy and had a fantastic taste. Initial impression is Sugar Rush/Peppacream type of sweet taste with may be a tiny bit of starfish in there but hard to tell. Will need to try other pods to firm up my view. Heat levels similar to Peppacream IIRC.
- Plant growing compact rather than super tall like the starfish often does, possibly as a result of it sharing the container with another starfish though
- Potential for colour variations at F2 based on mix of white and red parents

It's a superb taste so will be growing this one forward regardless. Bonus if I get more starfish traits in shape and/or flavour coming into future generations.
X018 Crossing Project F1.001.jpeg

F1 seeds harvested for a recent cross attempt.

X019: Clavo Peach (C.Chinense) x Sugar Rush Stripey (C.Baccatum)
Also attempting reciprocal as chinense mother longer odds, no pods set yet for this cross on my stripey plant.

Ended up with 3 separate F0 pods for this cross, healthy seeds in all of them. As of 14/8/21 have F1 seeds from each pod in germination to see if they are viable. If viable they will be a step forward in my attempt to get something stripey across into a Chinense. Interspecific cross so a very long way to go and lots of luck needed.
