CMPMAN1974 - 2012 Grow Log - Started 2/26/12

Well, after a long awaited time, I finally got some seeds in dirt this evening. Wow, it took a long time as some of these names of these varieties are long. :) My theme this year...Pequins/Tepins - rare ones & AFRICA. Also, I think some rare Brazilian varieties will be planted too along with some Pubescens in the next few days. I have no idea how germination will be on some of these African varieties, but it should be fun. I enjoy market varieties and odd stuff found off the beaten path.

Here's what I've got sowed to date. Wish me luck!

Chris

It's a lot of work, but everyday I am pulling in bowls of pequins/bird types. :) It's an endless task. lol. Gotta love African and Mexican peppers!

I find many to be similar honestly with respect to taste (quick burn, not a pronounced flavor). Some have more heat than others. Growth habits vary significantly among them though, which I'm intrigued by.

This one I harvested today is nice though. I can only guess Al is a big guy and grows "big" Birdseye peppers. LMAO. These are bigger than any pequins I have grown. :) Good flavor and great heat though. I like it. These are the only three pods I've gotten off the plant.

Hi Chris, I get the same none descript flavor from my bird eyes and Tepin type peppers, but that could be just my old taste buds. I tried doing a flavor test and I found that most tasted the same way. I wonder if my plants got enough sunlight, heat and nutrients to develope needed sugars and flavoroids??
My sweet peppers when fully ripe were very sweet, but so far my hot peppers taste just plain harsh, kind of like fuel oil.

George, I don't think that attribute of pequin/bird types is due to climate or soil. I think it's just the way the species is. I like it many times in dishes because it doesn't impart a strong overpowering flavor, just a quick burn. Sometimes you don't want to change the flavor of something, but you do want to enhance the heat levels.

If you're saying C. chinense types have no flavor, then I agree there may be issues. Many of them have very pronounced undertones. The superhots (a select few) can taste like fuel oil though. lol.

Chris

Couple more today. I find the look of this NOT Black Super Hot AISPES cross in my garden fascinating. It was never stable to begin with and I was aware of that. The pods are gorgeous and nice shape.

Nagabon is cool as it is almost white when immature and ripens in a beautiful way. I have not tasted it yet.

I had a chiltepin that I got from a seed company that did have a sweet flavor when ripe. They reminded me of the ones my dad liked when I was a kid. Others I tried were just bitter with a oily taste I like a lot of the larger C. baccatums as they have a lot of flavor compaired to the C. chinense. The Rocoto peppers have quite a bit of flavor also, what I don't understand is how color acts in determining the way a pepper might taste, purples and browns having a bitter after taste much of the time, while reds, oranges, and yellows seem to be better flavored when ripe.
Your not Black super Hot is interesting, some crosses can throw out some very interesting pod shapes and often are very productive.

Some of my 7 Pot Evergreen pods are monsters! Look at the bottom right one next to a U.S. quarter. :) It's been a great producer this season. I'm pretty happy with it.

People ask how I know if they are ripe as the final color is green/bronze. The answer: by feel (softer to the touch - can squeeze the pod AND note the interior color - a bronze color);. Those two key factors determine a ripe pod IMO.

Those are some big pods, bet they are just as tasty as they look, We've got cold weather on the way night temps in the upper thirties day temps in the lower 50's with cold rain expected. I'm not sure what I will do just yet. All my plants are loaded with green pods, not one ripe yet.

Those are nice 4 sure, Chris now do they have heat? never tried one b4
Wildseed57...same boat here i read a week ago (can't find it now) that you can take the green peppers and put them into a paper sack along with a ripe tomato and the tomato gives off some kind of gas and ripens them....have not tried it ..thought i would throw it out there.

The gas released is ethylene. In my opinion banana peal works best. As long as ripening has started at some level, even if not visible, they will ripen. If it hasn't started it won't.

Gorgeous pods as usual. Have you tasted the evergreens? If so, are they as hot as the other 7 pods? I am assuming you have tasted other 7's  I know what they say about assuming! And how was the flavor? Do they have a "green" flavor?

Garden update. It has been a while. :) Things are getting close to the end probably as it's going down to 34 deg Sun night. We'll see. A few end of year plant pictures. A lot of plants are pretty picked, but...

Chris where did the season go ? Your plants still have the healthy green look. My plants that were exposed to the chill of the night have started to cork off but my OW's which are sheltered from the wind in a different part of the garden are still producing.
Every weekend I'm discarding plants........sad but true, this hasn't been the "pep-tacular" year I was hoping for. ........I still have quite a few bags of pods for sauce making.though...
Your photos have been inspiring for me and those who check out your glog. Keep up what you do best with the garden..."Grow and Show"

I hear you. The year flew by fast. A lot of my plants did drop off bottom leaves as expected at this time of the year. Some are still lush though. :) I have ripped out 50-60% of my plants already..little day by day. It makes it easier than one huge discard. Thanks and I'm glad you enjoy the pictures/documentation. It's been a pretty decent year for most varieties, except Pubescens. They did NOT like the heat wave and did nothing for a long, long time.

Spicegeist, the Brown Rocoto did nothing for me this year. It seems stunted. It has a crawling growth habit. It just now is setting a few pods. A bit late in the game, right? :) I don't have much room, but I may try overwintering one. I grew it several years ago and did get a few pods. It's a picky plant for sure. It likes different climates better than mine. It's s shame I can't get yields off it because it would be a cool powder. :)

Whoa Brown Rocoto! I had some seed and even got one plant going... but it didn't make it in the end...

Yes, I use the banana peel trick a lot. :) Works well.

The gas released is ethylene. In my opinion banana peal works best. As long as ripening has started at some level, even if not visible, they will ripen. If it hasn't started it won't.

Thanks, I really like them too.

Very nice pod pictures. I love those evergreen green/bronze coloured ones.

Yes, I have tasted the 7 Pot Evergreen. It's not as hot as a red or yellow 7 Pot IMO, but it has nice heat. I like the flavor too. It's hard to describe. It's not the flavor of an unripe pod by any means. The tough part is catching them at the right time meaning ripe, but not so ripe they want to rot. It's a thin line on this variety as Judy mentioned from day one. This year, it was more productive than last and pod size even bigger. No complaints here!

Banajul market- gambia..... That plant is crazy looking! Interesting side branching for an annuum. I have a plant that I think is Orange pepper tree from a pod from you that I took seeds out of. It is growing like that, and an annuum also. Do they look like a dark orange miniature carrot? I will have to get you a pic of a pod. That is probably the baddest pepper plant I have grown. I have 3...4 foot tall stakes and a crazy amount of twine trying to keep that thing standing. It has to be 4 1/2' to 5' wide and equally tall. I'm going to guess 5-600 pods on it and I have no idea how many harvested already. I wish I could get a decent pic to show the massiveness of it.
