CMPMAN1974 - 2012 Grow Log - Started 2/26/12

Well, after a long awaited time, I finally got some seeds in dirt this evening. Wow, it took a long time as some of these names of these varieties are long. :) My theme this year...Pequins/Tepins - rare ones & AFRICA. Also, I think some rare Brazilian varieties will be planted too along with some Pubescens in the next few days. I have no idea how germination will be on some of these African varieties, but it should be fun. I enjoy market varieties and odd stuff found off the beaten path.

Here's what I've got sowed to date. Wish me luck!

Chris

It's interesting because I have multiple Bhut Jolokia strains sourced directly from India. They look different size, texture, etc. I feel the original India-sourced pods have a better scent when cut open.

This Trinidad Scorpion 'Morouga Blend' Red x Bhut Jolokia F3 thick walled cross is insane. The inside is just so loaded. It's weird because the exterior is pretty smooth skinned and the tails are embedded in the pod almost.

You weren't kidding about the thick walls, wow. I wonder where that trait came from? Guhahati look nice.

The Neyde x Bhut cross looks just like what you'd imagine. I'm curious to see how my F1 will turn out.

Taste? All I get is pure heat. LMAO. They're like firebombs. They are kind of heavy too, which is strange.

great looking peppers... that hybrid is cool how are they for taste?

I too wonder about that ttait. It's just an odd pepper. I agree Guhahati is very nice. Good producer and very aromatic.

The funny thing is the Neyde x Bhut cross put out endless variations. The most predominant is peach pods based on my two grow-outs. Who would've thought, right?

Bootsieb, I definitely did plant a fair amount of African stuff this year. Some of the bird varieties are extremely prolific. You can just pick the pods forever. I didn't taste the Liberian one yet. I will soon.

Went all African Chris!

Liberian? Heat- I had some hot ones out there- but in the South, Greenville.

I am unable to trade/distribute Pimenta Tiger. tt was made by AISPES in Italy. They do not want their seeds distributed outside their membership. I'm sorry. I agreed to their rules.

OH MY GOD! Beautiful pods man! Just amazed. Whats the chances of trading for some of them Pimenta Tigers seeds? You have soooo many strains its jaw dropping bro. I'll be checking in more often!

These pods from the Amazon in Brazil; are the most pure white I have seen yet. :) Pretty cool. In contrast, giant 7 Pot Congo SR pods too. lol. There's not a huge difference looks wise between the new 7 Pot Congo SR seeds I got late last year. I prefer the original strain as the pods get even huger and more twisted. They are just mean looking. There's something fun about seeing a 35 gram pod hanging off a 3" stem on a branch with a pod transitioning to red with green/orange/yellow and red at the same time!

I held on to these original Trinidad Scorpion Butch T seeds a long time. :) Out of storage from 2006! This is exactly how I remember the evil monsters!

Finally, I got a ripe pod of Impact. On this one, I just don't see any Galapagoense characteristics on the pod, stem, etc. The interior is identical to the standard Red Bhuts I am growing. Maybe my plant recessed back to the parent attributes? It's got a nice number of long pods on it and big leaves.

It's interesting growing different Bhut Jolokia strains from India. I was given these seeds from a person who went to India and collected different pepper seeds there. There are obvious differences between strains like Guahati and Jorhat. It shows how many variations exist of these super hots. :)

Chris - thanx for posting that photo, not the white ones then? Taste? I guess it'd be difficult to tell when you eat so many!

Fan man i was reading through Chris es glog just this evening its quite amazing ..anyhow on page 4 he said this below...

[background=rgb(255, 244, 228)]I store my seeds in the fridge in enclosed containers with silica gel packets and other drying materials when possible to keep the temps / moisture as controlled as possible[/background]

Chris, I can always count on your glog for my Pod porn needs. It is the rubber band to my needle....bahahaha You never disappoint bro! Those yellows TSM's are looking beautiful my friend. Does the flavor match the TSMB? I love that TSMB flav, I'm sure the yellows are nothing but stellar. KUTGF

Still picking. :)

I didn't taste it yet. It's so tough to taste them all at the rate they are coming in. I will though I promise. I grew the red one I presume. I don't rmemeber getting any seeds for a white version from you.

Fishing4fun2, has it right. That's how I do it. Refrigerated, moisture controlled, etc. I am hesitant to freeze as you need confirmation of <7% RH to ensure the seeds aren't destroyed. I would guess I have it, but too risky for me.

Nice to see that the old seeds were still good, how do you store your seed collection?

Thanks. I'm glad you enjoy the photos/summary. I have fun doing it too! I think the flavor is stellar on the Yellow TMSB. I have always liked this one a lot. High heat, but not the level of the red. Excellent flavor, amazing producer. A winning package.

Very very nice chris, I wonder if the C. chinense is dominate over the C.galapagoense my Annuum purple pepper x galapagoense is the same way even at f3 leaves stems and flowers all show annuum traits, this year I decided to let it cross hopefully with my wild chacoense as I can seem to get a galapagoense to grow for me no matter what I do. This years cross threw out a variety that looked more like a piquin type pepper along with a small multicluster type chiltepin that has 5 to 8 pods clustering at different nodes. That butch T looks really awsome I can't wait for the package you sent I'll be in Hog heaven for sure.

Chris , I noticed your Bhut's look a lot like my plant that I heve been calling a bhut hybrid. Starting to think it isn't a hybrid after all. My seeds came from Bonnie's swap in 2010 labeled Bhut Jolakia labeled redwoodcityseeds. Very curious if you know who that person or pwrson's are. Pumps out tons of pods even in the heat and during the winter.

Thanks for all the amazing updates. Oh and are you gonna make any smoked powder for sale this year. I have been patiently waiting :)

Here is a pic of my what I thought was a hybrid bhut maybe not a hybrid.

This one is a fascinating pepper. I FINALLY got three pods to ripen after all this wait. The plant produces TONS AND TONS of pods facing upwards on a large plant. Non-ripe pods are almost white in color. They ripen to red eventually. The peppers appear to be thicker walled. However, when off the plant they walls become paper thin and the pods are very, very juicy. However, it's not like a regular pequin. Heat is maybe 7 of 10 - nice burn good flavor. This one is a mystery in lots of ways. I got if from a contact I have in South Africa. It's one of these that make you go hmmmm...

Chris

My, this one looks and tastes so much like those odd red ones you find in the specialty salad bars. :) Hmmmmmm...It came to me as 'Pickling Pepper'. Let's keep it that way. lol.

Flavor is very good on the SB7J. My plant is not real productive. I have in a 5 gallon pot and only got 6-7 pods off it. Heat is substantial, but not full super hot level. The interior is interesting too.

I think my favorite African variety is this one as it's super prolific and nice. Two of these plants can last one a long time!
