I've got a 3 shelf, 70"x48"x24" unit as my main indoor system. Being in North Carolina, I can put plants into the ground in mid-April. I've got other shelves to use when needed.

INTRO
I coach high school Cross Country & Track.
I teach AP Psychology. People say psychology majors are the people who need help the most. I was a History major, but people who spend a lot of time thinking about psychology may self-diagnose at times. Maybe. No one's ever told me I'm OCD. I'm super messy, but I do have a major "all or nothing" theme in my life. I run 100 mile races. I haven't washed my car or had it washed since 1991. I only wear 3 colors of shirts- black, navy & green (& only green because it's a school color). Maybe I have a problem. :) Why would peppers be any different?

I've always had gardens of some size- even if just 6-8 tomato plants & a couple of squash. In 2014, I expanded my garden exponentially. Still have a lot of fall/winter crops. I've never grown peppers or tomatoes from seed & only grew jalapenos, habaneros, bells, cayenne & tabasco. In mid-October, I only had 5 varieties of pepper seeds. Two months, later, I have 220, thanks to stumbling across this site & benefiting from the generosity of the folks on this site. Expanded my seed stockpile through giveaways, trades, harvesting from pods, and buying just a few. Incredibly generosity here. I've paid forward some of that, though my stock is limited to 5-10 seeds for most varieties minus what I have or will grow this season.

I've had a ton of questions & I've made a lot of mistakes so far. Hopefully this will evolve into more of voice of experience in a few months, but now, I suppose the glog is more a consolidation of advice seeking.

HISTORY TO DATE
The plan is to plant a total of six 1020 flats with 48 cells in each & to spread it out roughtly a month apart- two Nov. 1, two Dec. 1 & two Jan. 1.

I started germinating some seeds in bags October 26 but followed up 10 days later with seeds in soil. I didn't notice a difference in germination rates or speed between the two methods so I won't use bags in the future. I was a little impatient with germination, but after planting 2 seeds in each of 96 cells, I ended up with 88 seeds that popped. Not quite 50%, but it's a learning process. Almost all of the last set of seeds I planted sprouted. Problems were:
* Planted too deep
* Compacted soil too much
* Not ideal mix of soil. Used a mix of 3 store bought mixes with added Vermiculite. The one I used most heavily had too much mulchy compost. Have since improved with finer soil & Perlite.
* Temperature wasn't that consistent early on.

I have all of that worked out for later germination.

I will complete the last of the 2nd wave of planting this week.

OTHER PROBLEMS
BUGS
About 3 weeks ago, I came home to little tiny orange bugs on the underside of the cotyledons & tiny gray flying bugs- fewer of the gray ones. I sprayed insecticidal soap and the orange guys didn't last long. The tiny gray ones are still around but not in great numbers. I see one flying around a few times a day.

YELLOWING
I've had about 6-8 seedlings die after yellowing. I'm positive I overwatered a little early. Last week, nearly ALL of my seedlings were looking a little yellow. I have watered very sparingly in the past 3-4 weeks. Every couple of days, some shrivel up & I give them a tiny bit of water. A few hours later, they bounce back. Besides that, I haven't really watered in the past 2 weeks. I changed my lighting around 3 days ago & have seen some changes... Was using one set of two 4" T8 lights with two 23w/1600 lumen CFLs on a clip & one 65w/950 lumen light for some heat. T8s were probably too far from the plants- maybe 16". 3 days ago, I added a second T8 fixture & ditched the other lights. I dropped the T8s to about 6" from the plants. The leaves seemed to have darken up a bit in the 3 days since. Today, I added some reflective insulation. I've had the lights on 18 hours/day. Temps have been a steady 82 degrees when they're on & 70 when they're off.

LIGHT BURN?
One of the reasons I got rid of the CFLs is because I couldn't put them anywhere except very close to the plants & noticed some darkened leaves in places where I left a CFL for several hours. Since then & since putting the four T8s on them 3 days ago, I've seen some dark spots form on the leaves that I don't remember being there before.
spotty_zps167a0d8c.jpg

Sorry you'll have to tilt your head. Several leaves are spotty like this after moving T8s down to about 5-6" from seedlings. A few were very dark after being very close to CFLs.
NO REAL LEAVES YET??
I only have ONE seedling with anything but cotyledons. That one has had it for 2 weeks but hasn't really grown since. There are a few other seedlings that are developing other leaves but they haven't fully developed yet. Should this be a concern since some of these seedlings sprouted a month ago?

My only true leaves. Notice leaves aren't very dark. Yellow Fatalii.      Yellow daying seedlings. About 6-8 have died.

Very nice pods Coach. Hope you feel better. Could be panic or anxiety. Hope it's just the body saying take it easy. You don't sound like the take it easy guy. I'm the same way. Always on the go.

Anyways thanks for sharing rest up this weekend.

Thanks. Haha. I'm not... and as a teacher with summers off, I should be pretty relaxed, you'd think. Now they're thinking it's a parasite I picked up in Morocco or Spain. I left out the GI part of the equation in my original post. I've lost 9 pounds in between doctors visits in 5 days. I ran 12 miles yesterday & 11 today at a snail's pace but felt like I was going to keel over. I'll live, I'm pretty sure, but thanks.

Some pictures... picked maybe 2% of the ripe pods I have today.

This is the pepper I thought about for months when I went to bed. I can't tell you how eager I was to get ripe ones. CARDI Yellow:

Nice looking pods. Great pics as well. Congrats on Cardi Yellow. That SBxNM looks great too.

23 miles in two days isn't bad for a guy that runs 100......and sick too. Your like the energizer bunny on RedBull. LOL

I do hope you feel better and the docs can figure out what's ailing you.

Thanks for sharing.

Those are some really nice looking pods! Yesterday I tried the first ripe Aji Pineapple, grown from the seeds you gave me. Instantly became one of my favorite peppers.

Thanks. I'm kinda dumb. I'm at 43 miles for the past 4 days & will hit 70 for the week but that's almost all I've done. Good think I'm a teacher with nothing to do but coach kids for 2 hours in the morning. The peppers are taking care of themselves (except for more bug holes than I'd like), but the rest of the garden could use some help. I figure I could feel so so & not get the running in or feel lousy & run. I'm choosing the running.

Thnx for posting the pix! Take it easy too bro.
Thanks. The colors & shapes are probably equally appealing to me as the heat & taste. :)

Glad you liked it! They are pretty good and the plants are pretty prolific. I'm growing what was labeled Aji Pineapple, Aji Lemon Drop & Aji Amarillo and notice very very little difference. I'm pretty sure the Amarillo isn't right. I think it should be more orange. Headed up sort of near your way (Brevard) for running camp with my team in a week. Looking forward to just a few degrees cooler. Think I'll head up near Grandfather Mountain this weekend.
Every couple of days I pick 6-8 different peppers that I want to be sure to try in addition to any others I may eat. I've been eating 2 superhots a day & then sweets, jalapenos, serranos, fataliis... Here are those I have lined up to try in the next couple of days. The Bad Brains didn't make it 5 minutes inside before I ate it in some food. Best superhot I've tried. Shout out to Wes Lane.

Bad Brains, SB7J, Bhut Orange Copenhagen, Peach Fatalii cross, Black Fatalii, off pheno Reaper, unknown peach (lost the tag & doesn't match with anything I meant to grow. Plant is loaded with these), Yellow 7 Pot x Bhut, Hair:

I'll definitely save seeds from this Peach Fatalii cross. The photos aren't showing it's color very well. Definitely peach.

Thanks! I grew up coming to the Grandfather Mountain area a couple of times a year & as an adult, go up every month or two. I'd always been told the name came from the face seen as the grandfather was on his back. As it turns out, its an upright profile on one of the small peaks. Oh well.

Not the greatest pictures but thought I'd mix things up rather than just post pods.
First picture: longer purple pods are Buena Mulatta I got from Juanitos. Didn't plant it at first but did late & am happy I did, Dilly Street Tamwork are the small purples, one on the right is the ever popular Goats Weed:

Impossible to get a good picture of the garden as a whole. Here are maybe 125 of the 280 pepper plants with some other stuff in the background:

And at the risk of double posting, here are some peppers I picked today & posted to sell for $14/box:

In other news, I got a couple of Red Rocotos to finally pod up. No easy task in this heat. One plant may have had 50 blossoms that did nothing.

Very impressive garden!

Let's see the rest of it!

Nice pods too.
I wish. Most of it has really had a hard time with the heat we've had this summer. I gave the tomatoes some extra care today, weeding, fertilizing & mulching. We'll see if they perk up a bit. Worst tomato crop I've ever had & I grew about 5x more than I ever have. I'll post more garden pictures soon.
_
Being a novice & having so many varieties in the garden, I'm trying a new pepper about every other day. Seems like I have a new favorite pepper about twice a week- Yellow Brain Strain, Bad Brains, BOC, and now Yellow 7 Pot x Bonda Ma Jacques. I ate this one for the first time today. Really really good. Also at my first Queen Laurie & the first Burkina Yellow I've grown (though I had the one I got seeds from last fall). Both of them were exceptionally good too. But that Yellow 7 Pot x Bonda Ma Jacques... mmm... I guess it makes sense your favorite pepper is the last one you ate. :) Truth be told, I can tell if I like something or not but it's difficult to judge between peppers just using memory. I remember when I got into (& dove head first) this pepper nonsense last October I wished there was a list of the 20 or 40 or 60 peppers you just "had to have." Now I'm seeing why there's not. I have identified a few I won't grow next year, but finding favorites that I have to grow will be tough if I plan on narrowing down the list. When I look at all of the seeds that have found their way to me in the past few months, I know there may be different peppers in the garden next year, but maybe not fewer. sigh... :)

Anyway, here's the beautiful & tasty Yellow 7 Pot x Bonda Ma Jacques.

Reposted picture from SB7J Community Grow thread. Planted 3 plants from the same seed source. Labeled as "SB7J Red Mushroom pheno." Got 2 green plants with green pods that ripened to dull red & 1 purple stemmed plant that has purple pods that have ripened to pale yellow. No heat on one of the red podded plants & the yellow one, but high pungency & great taste on the other red one. To further complicate things, I have one labeled as "supposed to be SB7J red but mine were yellow" that I planted much later & those haven't ripened yet. Interesting that all plants have uniform pod shape with so much other variation.

Picked about half of the ripe ones today. Easily 1,000. Will pick the other half tomorrow. Now I have a wheelbarrow of peppers in my kitchen. That's normal, right? Someone's going to be busy in the next few days.
What will you do with all those?  Good luck with whatever you do.  One hell of a pull. I suspect I will have a similar pull in a few weeks or a month.  I been over eager and pulling a lot a little early, got about 100 tonight but left on at least 2 or 3 hundred I could have picked but convinced myself to let them ripen a bit more.

I missed your post from back in July, how was that Yellow CARDI,  looks awesome.  The more I see of that one the more I am convince mine last year was not true.  It was similar but not much of a tail and really mild for a scorpion, more like a mild habanero even.

I can see you're at the point where you don't even care what variety is what lol. It can escalate quickly

I'll separate them tomorrow by color & heat level, but not really variety. I'll freeze some for sauces later. I'll also smoke, dehydrate & grind most them. How much powder will that be though?? ...pickle jalapenos & serranos... ...give some away to friends... any other ideas?

Genetikx said:
With that many, I'd run them through a food mill to separate the seeds and harvest the pulp. I'd then put the pulp in mason jars with a top layer of salt and pressure cook. Come back a year later and you've got the best base for sauce imaginable.
Yeah? How much salt?

There's probably a reason I've never seen anyone growing this one. Shape is neat but very little taste or heat. Got seeds from GRIN. PI 281424.
