Compmodder26's 2014 Grow Log - Supers ripening

So my 2012-2013 season has offically come to a close.  All of my plants are now composting with the exception of one plant.  I picked the final 3 pods off of my 7 Pot Brown this weekend.  Potted the mother down to a 3 gallon pot and gave her a haircut.  She's in her new home for the winter.  Crossing my fingers as this is my first time to try overwintering a plant.

I will be back on in a bit to post my grow list for 2014.

There won't be much activity on this glog until mid-late January.  That's when I'll be starting my Chinenses.

Stay tuned...

Thats a hell of a list Brian! Good luck! I planted in a checkerboard pattern last year too. Worked really well!

Thanks Jamison.  Good to hear that you had success with the checkerboard pattern.  I just realized that I never let you know I got the MOAs in the mail.  Sorry about that.  As you can see from my list, I indeed got them.  Thanks again!

Brian,
Good luck with the ow and the indoor start...looking at all the early planning has got me running out for starting mediums later today...lol

Your checker board layout will work. You may sacrifice overall production per plant, but inturn you'll have more varieties per sq ft.

Alright, getting in the full swing of things now.  I just got done starting my Chinenses for this year.  All are in ziplock bags with wet paper towels.  Using the space in my TV stand again where my cable box sits.

Mama Brown is doing well in her winter home.  She has nice lush green growth.  I haven't had to add any ferts yet, she's still happy with the stuff in the Fox Farm Ocean Forest.  Thankfully she is staying fairly compact for me.  I doubt I'll get through the rest of Winter/early Spring before I have to prune her a bit though.

Also, the grow list has changed a bit (surprise, surprise! ;)).

I am no longer doing the test plot, instead opting to do half of the main plot with RCW mixed in the soil, and the other half with RCW only on the top as mulch.  I decided against it as that would make me have to start more plants than I really want to.

Here is what the list looks like now:

White Bhut Jolokia x2 - Judy
Naga Morich x2 - Judy
Monster Naga x1 - Judy
Carolina Reaper x1 - Puckerbutt
Yellow Scorpion CARDI  x2 - JoynersHotPeppers

Sweet!!! I like your update pace too! Finally a grow I can keep up with! Nice mix of heat and flavor in that list too!

Haha!  Thanks Shane!  Believe me, I would greatly prefer to update more often but I'm horrible at remembering to.

I start the rest of my seeds in 1 1/2 more weeks.

Here's what's popped of my Chinenses thus far (I'm doing 3 seedlings of each to start, but most will be widdled down to 2 plants when they are older):

See alot of people using this technique for starting their seeds. Never personally used it till this year, usually just put in dirt, I had a few stubborn seeds that i just couldnt get to germinate. Put a few varieties in a ziploc baggie and was able to get a few of them to germinate....Coincidence???

Have you moved the them to dirt yet?

I'm not sure which method could be considered better.  There are camps for both sides.  I'm too cheap to buy a heating mat, so I use this method to get the optimal temperature for germination.  I've used it for 3 years and have been satisfied with the results.

The ones that have popped are in dirt now.  I have two that have poked their heads above the dirt so far, 1 Monster Naga and 1 Trinidad Scorpion Yellow CARDI.

All right, Brian, let the good times roll, brother!
Good to see you in the saddle for the season.
Awesome germination rates, as well!

Monster Naga sounds interesting...

First year growing it.  From Judy's site it looks like a huge Naga Morich.  Naga Morich is one of my faves, so if it turns out like them I will be happy!

Well, not everything is going great.  Of all the seeds that sprouted in the paper towels, only 9 have made there way topside of the soil.  The rest damped off.  I'm using Epsoma Organing Seed Starter soil.  Dunno if I was too heavy handed with the watering, or if the soil is tainted, or what.  Anywho.  Here is a pic of the casualties:

Here's the survivors:
2014-03-05%2013.15.03.jpg

In the pic we have 1 Monster Naga, 2 7 Pot Browns,1 Brown Moruga Scorpion, 2 White Bhut Jolokias, 1 Chocolate Moruga Scorpion, 1 MOA Scotch Bonnet, and 1 Carolina Reaper

Here is round two of seed starting.  Decided to just put them straight into dirt.  So I bought at 72 cell tray and germination mat.  Included in round 2 are some Chinenses that didn't make it through round 1.  The ones without the lid covering them have already started poking out of the dirt.  They Annuums and Baccatums, so I'm not surprised they already popped.  I started these last Friday (2/28).

What I have in the tray:
Giant Jalapeno
Jimmy Nardelo
Huge Bell
Mariachi
Orchid
Banana
7 Pot White
7 Pot Burgundy
Brown Moruga Scorpion
Chocolate Moruga Scorpion
Chocolate Hab
Yellow Bhut
White Bhut
Scotch Bonnet
Monster Naga

Hey, Brian, sorry to hear about the damping off; that's sucky for sure.
The survivors look great, though, and that's an awesome round two start-up!

Sorry to hear about the set back too. At least it's still early and you're going back at it.  I'll be curious to see how the wood chips tilled into the soil works.  Is 6 months enough to break them down to avoid nitrogen lock up?  I use the wood as a mulch and figure that over the years they'll break down.  Also, I see your white bhuts had good germination rates and times. I noticed that because mine were the same, they popped up early and almost every seed germinated.  I loved the flavor of those last year.
