I spy with my little eye, something that rhymes with Cumato [emoji16][emoji106]. How do you like them Kumatos [emoji848][emoji106][emoji16].

Nice pickins Harry. The Aji Margariteno looks promising.

PtMD .... I like those Kumatos.  Thanks again for the seeds.  Yesterday, I cut up some for a BLT and I diced some up to go on my BBQ pulled pork baked potato last evening.  Good stuff.

Getting ready to roast green chiles.  6 varieties.  The remaining pods that we didn't harvest will be left on the plants and will be dried and processed when red.

This morning's haul.  A little of bit everything.  Over 50 varieties.  My guess is 600-700 pods and we didn't harvest the little guys yet.

It's a drum chile roaster.  Hand crank version.  You can see the crank handle on the right side.  Some are motorized.  Ours has a five propane manifolds. It will roast up to 25 lbs of chiles in about 8 minutes.  You can also use it to roast corn.  It's a good tool but you've got to roast a lot of chiles and corn for it to pay for itself.  I even have some friends that come over to use it.  Just do a google search for chile roasters.  It's a wonderful New Mexico tradition made famous in Hatch but is used all over the southwest.  This year we've roasted green Big Jim's, Hatch Milds, Rattlesnakes, Lumbres and a few others.  Now that we've got enough for Green Chile frozen we'll leave the rest of the chiles on the plants to turn red and then we'll dry them to make red chile.  We also roast Poblanos and freeze them.

I have a rotisserie thing for my bbq and have never used it. Looks like I need to buy a basket and put it in service. Genius! Roasting then freezing sounds like a great way to preserve in bulk.

Yanked at least a dozen good looking plants today.  Off to the burn pile .... full of pods.  Pulled several plants that didn't grow true (saved a few pods for seed).  A few varieties that really sucked because they didn't have the flavor we wanted or expected.  Some that we have already harvested lots of and we're sick of them and some that just pissed us off for one reason or another.  It was a good year for yellows.

  • Padron - Multiple plants, One of our favorites, Harvested all of the ripe pods (buckets full), overrun by pods, saved seeds
  • Not MA Wartryx - Grew out as some sort of small BBG7 like Red, OK pods, Harvested all of the ripe pods for seed
  • Not Ancho Gigante - Grew out as a green bell pepper, gave away as many as I could, pissed me off
  • Not Mucho Nacho - Multiple plants, all grew out as a yellow bell pepper, gave away as many as I could, really pissed me off
  • Dolce de Minervino - Italian fryers, Nothing wrong with it, we like other varieties better, Harvested the ripe pods

Piles and piles! Beautiful pods, but cannot imagine all the time it takes to process! For some reason, might be kind of pedestrian looking compared to some of the exotic varieties there- but Orange Blob looks really interesting.

If you could only grow one out of the group in last post, what would it be?

Tough to narrow down but I really like Fatalii,  Bonda Ma Jacque and that Aji Rosita Dulce is killer.

The defko and jigsaw gator catch my eye. Great looking pods all around. The garden pics are spectacular, at first glance I thought the garden was half that size (still plenty large) and then I realized there were a few more boxes.
