Dennish 2017 - It's Chilli in Yorkshire

Happy New Year!

Still deliberating over my ‘final’ list as per usual!  It will be 'more of the same' with some small tweaks here and there, and no radical changes in approach from me.  I feel I’m close to optimum in terms of squeezing the maximum potential out of my small greenhouse space (8’ x 6’).

Here's my current thinking on the line-up and GH layout, likely to change a bit;

The game is now afoot!  Early sowings in my trusty Garland Fab 4 on New year’s Day;

I’m having a major extension on the house this year in spring, so hoping that my grow won't suffer too much.

Wishing all my friends at THP a bountiful 2017.

Cheers,

Dennis

Now that's a sweet looking plant!

Cheers fellas, it never ceases to impress me at this time of year, looks especially beautiful with the new growth emerging from the woody old trunk.

So small progress update from me... plants all out on the windowsills today for some sun.

All of my baccas and annuums have germinated too, which is good news!

6 Year Old CARDI now really motoring, pretty impressive to say this is only from limited windowsill light.

Had a re-shuffle of the troops and ousted the Aji Bodysnatcher F3 plants from under the growlight and into 1l / 5" pots.

Don't whisper this too loudly... but Operation Takeover has commenced.  I smuggled the plants into position in the dead of night and so far their cover remains in tact as does my marriage, time will tell if one or both will be blown before plant out time in May  8)

As you can see they were ready, perfect amount of roots nicely filling the pot without being potbound.  I've potted-up into Terra Canna Pro, so expect them to really fly over the next 2 weeks.  I'm using a chilligrow base as a handy tray for 6 plants, the weakest recruit was culled - no room for sentiment in my grow this year!

Note - no feed used to this point, the plants have been in B&Q seed mix for about 6 weeks which has ample nutrients for seedlings.

My objective is to promote early fruiting in the small pots and then select the most promising pod shapes for planting out in larger pots for the full season, the rest will be culled.  This allows me to have a reasonable amount of plants to select from without dominating my grow.

I'm resisting potting on anything else for now, stage 2 of Operational Takeover will commence mid-March when the windowsill invasion will be in full force.  Any earlier and experience tells me I will run out of space and end-up with pot bound plants.

Also can't update without mentioning TS CARDI, the old boy is kicking on with growth and setting lots of buds and flowering!

So today I've potted up a few plants... all into Terra Canna Pro.

Firstly 6 Year Old TS CARDI into a 6l pot.  He'll be kept indoors in pride of place and I don't want the added bulk of an SWP, so this will be his final home for the season.  There is a beautiful smell of chilli blossom in my office at the moment, I love it.

Next some of my early starts, into 1l duck egg blue wife camouflage pots.

First up, Yorkshire Barghest F1... a truly massive wingspan, maybe I should have named this cross mighty eagle or something... ridiculous.  I think I'm going to have to snip some of those leaves, no prizes for biggest wingspan!  Still, bodes well I suppose... very vigorous and my best looking plant to date.

Next-up SB MOA, I've selected the conventionally grown plant for potting-up, the topped and stripped plant is the poor relation at this point.

And finally, Río Huallaga Rocoto.  My plan is to give this one its head in the GH early doors then move outside when established for the season.  I'm planning on planting in a SWP builders bucket for extra stability.

very nice Dennis. so ye olde Cardi stays in the 6L for the whole season? do you experience any trouble with the roots?
Cheers!  No I haven't found any problems with final pots of this size, they serve to limit plant growth and promote earlier fruiting so perfect in this situation as I will be keeping the plant on a windowsill for the main part of the season.

Sooo... update time.

Plants all motoring along now, by day on the windowsills and by night the ones that still fit getting a top-up tan.

Topped Lemon Drop for growdown challenge recovering nicely, hoping this pays dividends later on in the season.

Greenhouse has been cleaned out, decks swabbed and windows cleaned - all ship shape and ready for my plants!  Autovents not working after reinstalling them, have sent off for a replacement cylinders from ebay, hope they fit.  Daytime temps are so, um, tempting, but low night temps still too.

Nice work! Rolling right along! :fire:

Dennis, you got some smack, brother!

Those plants are beauties, every one.
you are the master of your chili domain,
my friend!

I long for a nice sunny windows for my
plants.  We can hardly grow ivy in our
house!  Am grateful for T5HO lights, or
growing here would be dismal.

Thank for the kind words Paul!  I love this time of year as the days get longer and spring is almost here.... although plants on the windowsills does test the martial state of harmony for a couple of months!

Fantastic lookin' grow, birthday boy! A few of my aji amarillos are on the sill, podding and flowering and oblivious to how much better and longer the sunshine will get!

Thanks Stetto!  I usually roll out all my plants to windowsills permanently about now, will be doing so over the next couple of weeks.

You're getting fantastic results Dennis! Looks like it's still cold at night where you are. How soon will you be moving your plants into the greenhouse?

Thanks Rick, yes it is still cold at nights... frost still possible.  I usually aim for early May for full plant out, but it will depend on the weather forecast.  I'll begin moving them into the GH to harden them mid-April.
