DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

Well I take it back..after seeing your pictures I'm sure you'll be able to fight any conditions. Loads of land and materials you have there, certain you can whip up some nifty inventions to help protect your plants. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Follow button clicked :P

Thanks PJ :)
We learned a lot last year about growing stuff in these conditions!
I think the Goat Pen is going to be the best pepper spot due to the big walls on 2 sides that were a windbreak for the goats :)
Plus a test plant I potted in the unaltered soil from the pen is doing great!

But don't get me wrong....It is definately stacked against growing stuff here, it is just a matter of compensating for it, and fighting the conditions...LOL

Glad you started up the glog Chris - very interesting growing conditions. I'll be watching to see how you do. If you get a chance, watch any Geoff Lawton videos you can find on youtube or vimeo - he's done amazing work in situations similar to yours. It would be interesting to see what sort of practical things you could get from him and apply. Looks like you're off to a great start!

Thanks Andy! I'll check those out as soon as I can. More ideas and techniques are a good thing!

Will be fun to follow and watch this because its really big difference to my climate!
Good luck man :)
Thanks Simon, Yep, anywhere in Sweden is going to be drastically different to here. In fact almost everywhere is different than here!!!

OK, Planted out yesterday.......and woke up to this today :)

OK....Just Kidding!! That is the Garden last season :)

On a side note, what the heck are these little buggers....
They are on the top and underside of leaves.
They are pretty flat, and somewhat easily wiped or sprayed off.
They later seem to emerge as a green flying thing with wings similar to those stupid black gnats??
They don't seem to be hurting the anything, but geez....
I searched extensively online last night, and couldn't find anything resembling them.

Here is one of the Viper Spikes....He looks like he is going to grow leaves...The other one is still just a spike.
IMAG1511_zps8a35a2c2.jpg

And Last, My neighbors / Gardening Partners, Brought home 325 of these 32 ounce styrofoam cups, and 32 ounce food containers....So I transplanted a bunch of stuff that was in smaller cups :) That size will should get them through until plant out time :)
IMAG1507_zps3f0316ad.jpg

The bugs look like aphids. They're nasty things. Do your plants spend time outside? If so they probably picked them up there. If they're not aphids, they still look not good, like a sap sucking pest of some sort.

I don't think they are aphids....I've never seen any around here...Plus they don't look like photos of them.
Hmmmm, I would hate to have to nuke them, but if I have to I will...
I didn't have any of these in the garden last year, but had plenty of other pesky critters.
These plants are inside at night, and outside in the day.
I tried to get a photo of one with wings, But cellphone didn't capture it well.

Also, Aphids are taller, more like a flea body shape, and these are really flat, and don't really move around. It is quite puzzling to identify them....

Agreed, and though a few may not cause much damage, a few can become a horde in a hurry. As Andy says, even if they aren't aphids, they aren't good. They might be some type of scale insect. They definitely aren't one of the known beneficials. I say kill 'em, kill 'em all, kill 'em quick.

Edit - Something of a simulpost, I guess. I was responding to Andy's post.

Well, looks like I'll likely be mixing up the pesticide in the sprayer :(
Not what I wanted to do today.....

The weird thing is that the flat ones seem to be a young version, and the adults emerge like a green gnat around the size of those Black gnats....

I'm sure you already have something that works for you, but I've had good luck on aphids with this Bayer Natria product. It's a mixture of sulfur and pyrethrins, so is relatively safe for non-insects. I've stopped aphid infestations cold with one application.

This is what I have right now
http://www.bayeradvanced.com/insects-pests/products/fruit-citrus-vegetable-insect-control
Active ingredient Imadacloprid.....Looks like it is nicotine derived....and is a neurotoxin for insects, but safe for mammals and other non-insect invertebrates.

I hate using stuff like this, but I would rather not lose any plants to bugs.

It worked great on the crazy cucumber beetles and the hordes of weird little sap sucking tiny beetles that we got hit with last season.

Hopefully it takes these buggers out too...

I hear ya. I try to stay "natural" as much as possible, but sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet. I've been working on some botanically-derived insect and animal treatment formulas, but nothing's ready for prime-time yet.

Let me know when they are!! I will be first in line :)

OK, Nuked the crap out of them, so hopefully that is all for them.

On a lighter note,
First Jamaican Hot Chocolate hooked today
First Fatalii
Another Viper
Another Datil

:) :) :) :)

Will do, I'm sure I'll post something in the marketplace, or wherever is appropriate. Datils, reminds me, I've got more seeds to plant and time isn't waiting for me.

Me too!!
As they hook, I transpant the peat pellets into cups with soil, Then put more pellets and seeds in the empty spot in the germ tray....13 spots to fill today :)

But..... Nascar is on right now...LOL

Hah! Nascar is why I'm here on THP and not potting/planting right now. Can't help it, love the race.

Me too!! I have the race on in the living room, and out on the back porch...been running all around planting, sowing, typing on the laptop, and of course watching the race :)

I'm not that good at multitasking, or maybe I'm just being lazy on a Sunday afternoon.
