DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

What is weird is that I had 1 plant with the brown "decaying" spots on the stems....I kept it far away from everything else.
Eventually I disposed of that plant.
None of my other plants got whatever it was that was afflicting that particular one.

This stem issue looks way different...almost like the stems are lignifying, but in a reptilian sort of look....no fuzzy or rotten or decaying spots...some withering of the ends of stems, and of course leaf dropping.
The 4 afflicted potted plants seem to be surviving so far, but definately not as well as they should be...

It is a shame too because one is my only Jigsaw and one is my only Moa.
I really wanted seeds from both, to plant next year and to share with other people...

All the pepper plants that were put into the ground look healthy though, so I should get lots of seeds of other varieties...just maybe no Jigsaw or MOA seeds.

Maybe you can overwinter them and get an early start next spring.  FWIW, the Jigsaw I grew from your seeds should almost certainly produce seeds before frost (barring major disaster) and you get first dibs on those.  I've also got some MoAs on the verge of ripening and I can turn you on to some of those seeds, too, if you like.

WOOHOO!!!! Thank you soooo much.

I am definately planning on overwintering as many plants as possible. Hopefully get a jumpstart in the spring, and maybe some winter pods too.
I had pods on overwinters in january, but when it got down too 7° the heat source in my flimsy temporary overwinter greenhouse was overwhelmed and they were all slain.
This time I am going to use the little shed out back that has an east facing window...so however many plants I can squeeze in there.
And with wooden walls it should hold heat better and keep out the cold better. So hopefully with the heat source they will do ok.

I should get some seeds from some cool (hot) stuff too....I'll let you know what I end up with. And will send whatever you like.

Boy those long brown bhuts, you sent me the seeds for, are setting pods left and right! I can't wait till they ripen.
Same thing with Romy6's cross...those seem to grow great here too!

My first ripe superhot is almost ripe! A giant ghost pepper that looks the same size as all my regular red bhuts...lol !!
I can't wait... I'm going to eat that thing whole.
Also have a Moruga starting to turn red :) but I don't want to even think of eating that whole!!

I have been practicing on the not ripe yet red bhuts by eating one a day (and one half ripe purple bhut). Mainly to clear my sinuses since the daughter brought the plague home from school, and got the whole family sick with some dang cold virus...
Those "green bhuts" are working awesomely to keep my head cleared...best cold remedy ever.
Too bad my gal and the kids keep saying no when I offer them the remedy...lol

I've had mixed experience with unripe supers, some hot, some not so hot.

Long brown bhut or long brown hab?  I thought I remembered they were habs, but I may be wrong.  If we're talking about the same thing, mine have lots of pods, too, and I think I saw one starting to turn yesterday.

Man, ya know it's a gamble which way those unripe pods are going to come out every time. I used some green habs to make my Wasabi sauce and the heat was almost nonexistent. The flavor of the sauce was wonderful so still a win but I may have to use some powder next time to get the heat up where I want it.

I also have a rooting project going on. I got some clippings my moms Myers Lemon Tree, well more like a bush, a little root hormone and into some good organic soil and so far I have sticks with dried up leaves on them sticking out of the dirt. So..... we'll see what happens over time. Not ready to give up on them yet. Probably let them keep going till I have dried up sticks but they're still green right now.

So I looked at the long chocolate whatever.  I have six or eight plants (didn't count), and at least 4 different phenotypes.  Nothing ripening yet, but some look like cayenne, some are sort of nondescript, one looks like a bhut and one looks like a long hab.  It will be interesting to see what these ripen to.

I've never tried rooting cuttings from a tree. If that doesn't work maybe air layering will here's a link:

http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/earthkind/landscape/air-layering/

Years ago (many) I read that you can also cut dormant recent growth that's woody, strip the leaves, clip the top and bury it a few inches deep horizontally in the fall, keeping them damp, not wet, then pull them out and stick them in a pot in the spring. I tried it with 3 cuttings from a grape vine and all 3 took.

Chris, I'm thinking the plants that are looking bad are sick. Virus or bacterial, IDK. I've dealt with mites this year. In my case they attacked the foliage. Crinkled leaves and a rust around the edges, Shane pointed out the culprit. I treated them at the early stages with wettable sulfur and it knocked them down.

Have a great week!...wait weekend..yahoo!

Oddly enough they are well shaded...the porch has shadecloth on the roof....it has to be a virus or bacteria or fungus etc... I just don't know what, or how to treat them....

Chris, I ain't no expert: as last ditch, if is virus or bacterial, google Biotamax and Actinovate: Actinovate prevents more than stops but have saved a few "reptiles" in past with Biotamax and molasses. Sounds almost too good to be true but worked. Have you cut into any stem to make sure no squash vine borer got lost? (I doubt that.) Keep on keepin' on: excellent varieties! Tasty varieties! Here's link for Biotamax.

And thanks Scotty! Have made a note: "Grow only Scott's Funky Reaper"  ;)

WOOHOO!!!!!
First ripe superhot :) a small "Giant Ghost Pepper" (several plants and none of the pods seem all that giant to me)

I ate it.

For Dessert.

After a nice dinner of Carne Asada Tacos.

It was hot ;) but tasty.

The Magical Mystery Pepper Tour :)

I posted a video, but it seems to have disappeared????
Oh.... I am going to have to reply to everyone tomorrow.
The daughter brought the plague home from school, and wiped out our whole family.
Geez....no energy at all :(

Just harvesting these Spaghetti and Butternut Squash today , completely wiped me out!

Man, that's a lot of squash.  Good eatin' for the winter.  Wish I could watch the video.  For whatever reason, some time back, youtube videos started hanging on me.  Buffering I can live with, but this is something different.  Frustrating as heck.  I hope you get more supers than just that one.  How are they looking?

Edit:  Wonder of wonders, your video played for me.  I think I have some of all of those mystery peppers, also from Aji Joe's Mystery seed pack.  My next picture update will be shots of some of mine.  Hopefully Joe will chime in with some hints at some point.

The Supers are setting pods pretty nicely now....a few are starting to show color!
I'll do a video tomorrow.
With all the plants I planted, I should have way more than enough heat for the next year, or two.
But regardless, I'll be planting a ton of plants next year again....just less varieties. I want to plant the ones that grew better this year.

For example...creapers and butch t's haven't set pods very well (or at all) so those are not in my seed sowing plans.
Although I will likely overwinter some.

Yep, first time growing those 2 squash varieties, and it turns out they grow great here in the desert.
We are going to have to eat a ton of squash this year....lol

I posted the video in Joe's thread for pics of plants people got from his seeds. So I am really looking forward to what he has to say!!

Sorry to hear the family has the bug, kids will do that to ya!

Squash you have!

have a great week and feel better!

Your plants are looking healthy!  And congrats on that "giant" red bhut.  Good plan to see what grows well and go with those.
As far as the mystery pepper tour... I grew a regal black from Joe last year that had dark leaves and purple pods that turned red eventually.  It's a very pretty plant and might be what you have.
