DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)


Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

You've done better than I thought you would in your climate!
 
Funny how even in the desert where there's really not much to sustain the nasty's, create a green spot and bam!
 
Don't feel bad about the supers, mine haven't set but a few pods in the summer heat....but cooler weather is not that far out!

Thanks Scott! This year has definately been a bigger challenge than previous years.
 
It's truly amazing the pests can survive here, even more incredible that they can thrive.
I hadn't ever even seen an aphid here, until this year, and now its the aphid apocalypse!!
But they are all dead now, after a good hosing down of toxins ;) Along with thousands of squash beetles!
 
Finally got to my computer so I could watch the vids!!! Looking great! Can't believe how successful you've been up there. Your supers would probably set better with a shade structure. Timing will be tough for you with them. They're so picky...but an earlier start in hopes of them setting a round of pods before the terrible heat would be your best bet. Overwintering some might be the ticket for you too. When is your average first frost? If you can get a round to set soon and they don't ripen before frost, they'll ripen if you cut and hang the plants upside down. You will need to hang them in a spot that won't freeze though. In one last ditch effort you could hit them with some water soluble ferts...I have been getting temps over 100 and with weekly feeding of the "blue stuff" from a hose end sprayer I have been able to force some to set fruit. Everything else looks freakin amazing! Herb/tomato/annuums are insane! Keep it up Chris...glad to hear from you. My worry was you'd quit posting because you lost it all to the heat...no sir!!! Not the case!!! :dance:

Nope.... didn't lose them....they just weren't doing diddly!! (although the annuums were)
Yeah.... the high temps are causing billions of flowers to drop... I am definately going to have to overwinter a bunch of plants to get any sort of early harvest here....
 
Shade cloth would be great, but I couldn't afford It this year....water systems took all the garden funds.
Next year I get to put the superhots in the main garden, and that tree gives a lot of shade.
 
 
I wish I had a couple extra months past the usual frost date, and then I would be buried alive under pods.
 
The good...no.... GREAT news is I am now seeing some pods!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
Must be because I threatened them with my vegetable harvesting knife.
"Set pods or I will cut you down at the base of your stem!".......lol

looks nice chris.. looks like things have settled down for ya.. anyways.. i ran into heidi while she was in SD and i was as well.. she mentioned you got some of the seedlings too.. how are they.. mine are in solo cups. DYING to be transffered.. a couple flowering already.....

 
Chris the gardens look great, the flowers on the supers should start to stick once the temp changes or at least I'm keeping my fingers crossed for ya. What happen to all the ladybugs you had released way back and all the ladybug larva you had running around? I too was getting killed by aphids and mites, now I have loads of ladybugs, eggs and larva running around cleaning all the plants except the MoAs but I've been able to relocate a few larva there, I'm hoping they stay around, they seem to like the congragation of pepper plants on the other side of out house better. Have a great week mon!

Yep...she gave me some of Shawn's Moruga 7's....i was wondering if they are Morugas, or a blend with a 7 Pot.
They are small... need transplanting...I'm Going to overwinter them, and hopefully they do great next Spring :)
 
Yes...settled down here finally, and even have some superhot pods sticking....FINALLY!!!!!

I'm hoping they stick fast.... frost hits in the first or second week of November...running out of time...
Ladybugs and larvae are all over the place....But aphids!! Major Major I festation of them In the sprawling plant garden. BILLIONS!!
They laughed at Neem... So I nuked em...still some out there...luckily none In the pepper gardens ;)

Mine don't get that long, could they have crossed with something else in the garden? I do have one, the variegated bush that does produce some longer ones but yours look much longer and mas powerful.
