DesertChris' High Desert Extreme Gardening Glog

Hi everyone,
This is my grow log in the super windy, super hot, sometimes way too cold, rabbit and squirrel infested High Desert of Southern California.

In addition, My gardening has to be done on a super tight budget, so lots of stuff is recycled or repurposed for gardening use...LOL

I'll update my grow list as I add to it.

We have 3 garden areas that we will be using this year. (one last year, and 2 more I am preparing)

Most of the Peppers are already either Plants, Seedlings or in the germ trays :)
Tomatoes, Tomatillos and Eggplants are Seedlings or Germinating...

Special Thanks to "StupidJerk", "Pulpiteer", "Meinchoh", "AjiJoe" and "wayright" for kindly sharing so many wonderful seeds/varieties with me, and expanding my growlist!!
I will add details of where seeds came from when I get some more time :)

I liked that post for what's at the bottom...I would be willing to bet you got a foil packet of orange habs...if you're lucky. They weren't dried properly from the looks of things. Thinking if they were bhut seeds the residue left on them would have lit you up. Hope I'm wrong. Hope you gave them a little soak in some H2O2 water...

Glad to help your epic grow! For reference on your taste test, I touched some dry seeds with my bare fingers, tested my finger tips which proceeded to burn my tongue and lips, then kissed my wife which burned her lips. Then later accidentally rubbed my eye... so it is strange that you got nothing. Maybe they soaked them in something that removed the heat? When you find out for sure fill out something in the vendor area of the forum. It really helps others. Good luck on the germination!

I started a topic in there, but I speculated too much, and was asked to only review. So I am incorporating it here into the glog :)
I will update the germination (or lack of) etc...though :)

I felt the smallest amount of heat, but was really expecting more....mostly they just tasted "old".....

Honestly I didn't even want to waste the $3 worth of peat pellets, but I suppose it's only fair to give it a go.

I can't wait for the seeds you sent to pop :) so they can join the other seedlings in growing :)
Thanks again!

I probably should have done H2O2...i did do the chamomile tea thing (first time)
I usually just sow seeds right into a very wet peat pellet, and as the condensation happens on the roof of the chambers, I just let them dry up a bit....them later spray more water if needed.

I figure the pods/seeds were oven dried at way high temps (a member here messaged me that they use 180° ovens in India)
Also, they just plain seemed old.

The good thing is I actually don't mind orange habbies, but don't really need a hundred of them....lol
I only have 4 seedlings that were from my op pods last year, and a couple overwinters....

I seriously doubt they will germinate, but we'll see :)

Forgot to mention, it got up to 85° today!!

I don't trust that it wont frost, or even snow, before May, but yippee!!
Got to wear shorts for tyhe first time in a long time :)

Chris,

I have a short spring growing season, it gets hot here so fast (90's next week) if I don't push things in the ground early they may not produce as well. So I'm always looking over my shoulder during March for frost.

Two or three years ago it went down to 26 in the third week of March, at 4:30AM I was out checking things and saw frost, I turned the sprinkler on and prayed. An hour later I went back out and everything was solid ice! I let the sprinkler run until the ice melted. I had over 2500sq feet of corn, squash, melons, peppers, and tomatoes up and running; I only lost one pepper plant.

At this point I have everything in but the Chinense plants.

Here's to no frost!

Scott

Amen to no frost!!

it is in the 80's for the next few days...40's at night....
However....a cold front could always roll in anytime, and get below freezing again :(

After the deep freeze that stripped all my pretty overwinters of leaves and pods in a semi heated rigged greenhouse in january, I am paranoid of the dang cold...lol

And here is a Mustard Habanero sporting a fancy helmethead with a chinstrap.....
I'm waiting until the cots peak out of the top before the surgery to free him from it.....

IMAG1557_zps72ef6772.jpg

I have two helmet heads that survived surgery, one damped off and I snipped it and am trying to root it. The other has it's first true leaves with no sign of the second set, wierd, I wonder it they're just retards I should have left alone...

Wow, if they damp off, I just yank em, and dump the soil into a bucket....usually add that soil to an area I have some herbs growing next to the house (the dirt there is poor)

Man, I have had more helmetheads than I can count...most I just mist the helmet, and they grow out of it. A few just like being in the helmet I suppose...
Some I did surgery on and survived, a few did not...so now I try to leave them alone if I can resist....lol

Here is my main gardening theories for this place...
Since there are such Extreme Conditions....

1) Plant way more than you could possibly need or want.
2) Treat them roughly and poorly.
3) The strongest will survive.
4) Those stronger plants are more likely to be able to deal with the outside world during the crazy hot summer, pests and insane wind.
5) When hardening them off from indoor light to sunlight...Just stick them out there...if they can't hang with the lower levels of light now, they will never survive the triple strength sun in the summer.

Yep....that's my technique...lol

Ah, this helmet guy is one of those high$$ Reapers.

This is last Sunday's wind, it blew all day like this:

43.jpg

I have wind breaks on the North and East, in 24 years here it's blown out of the West like 10 times. The week before it blew 30 steady and gusting to 55, I had 120 plants outside, luckily the house blocked most of it.

You know I sorta like that technique :drooling:

Don't work too hard.

Scott

We get the west wind more often than I care to count...shoot it was 50-60 mph the other day!!

I plan on not working too hard, but you know how that ends up....lol

Yep...I have a bunch of reapers in different stages....they like the helmets...and grow so darn slowly..not the most vigorous of varieties for me. Now those Morugas are crazy though...Germ fast, and want to grow grow grow..

I have 5 of the Moruga's that hit the peat pots this AM, I had them on a wet paper towel for a few days.

You're right about the Reapers, mine are growing so slow, and they are sensative to the sun. I put them, Orange Hab's, and Red Caribbean's out in full sun, they went "silver leaf", the Hab's look great..

This is looking great. Huge list of nons, as well. It's getting warmer... :)

Thanks Doc :)

It got to 85° here today Woohoo!

Still afraid of a late frost, but I did leave some stuff out last night to enjoy the mid 40's.....lol

I just hope my application of Natural Selection works out well....could be boom or bust :)

If I had my way, it would be 90% peppers...lol...but the other 8 people here and next door like other foods better...lol
So I have to grow tons of stuff for them too, or I will be in big trouble ;)

NEWS BULLETIN!!

A couple of the 108 Red Bhut seeds Ed sent me, sown a mere 6 days ago, have hooked :)
I am thinking they really really want to be here in the desert....hahahaha

Oh, those seeds are NOT to be confused with the "old" bhut seeds from Canada...those I suspect will never see the light of day after being put into the peat pellets....

Oh, another small bit of info, decided to leave all the seedlings/plants (peppers and tomatoes) outside tonight (other than the 100 or so pepper seedlings under the lights). Suppossed to be mid 40's tonight...

Let the survival of the fittest commence ;) (I hope they are all fit!)

Chris...have the same "waistband" seed coat issue on a tepin. Didn't notice until it looked like the true leaves were coming out below the cotys. HA! I tried to eff with it, but the true leaves are free of it now, so I'm gonna let them grow a bit and see what happens??? I have a pic I'll share this weekend.

Yep, I am going to let him hopefully pop out the top. Then probably take an Xacto knife and tweezers to get that thing off the then hopefully stem area. If it was an Anaheim pepper, I wouldn't bother, but a Mustard Hab gets a little more concern....lol
I just hope that if I mess with it, it doesn't get worse...that does seem to happen half the time!

So how did the babies do on their first night out?

Hopefully they did OK,

Scott

Yep, everything did great!

Bunch of hooks popped up last night too :)

I need to get them into cups this afternoon :)

At first glance, there are 10 or more of Ed's Bhut seeds that have popped! planted 3-8...woohoo :)
A bunch of other stuff too.

At least one hook in the trays of each of these...most are more than one...Definately need to get them in cups tonight!

Yep, I better get going on them soon :)

Also an update on the 19 overwinter sticks...
1 dead as a doornail
12 still sleeping, a couple I am not sure if they are permanantly sleeping
6 with new growth! Yippee :)
All of these are plain jane ordinary varieties, but they produced well for me. And with roots a plenty, I am hoping they get going sooner.

Plus after the deep feeze nearly killed them in the makeshift greenhouse, they deserve to live :)
