Devv-2018-Loving life in the dirt

Here we go again! ;)

This year will be a mix of in the dirt and container growing. Mostly in the dirt. I have some OW's going, 5 are cut back, 6 are pubes that still spend time outdoors as the weather allows. I have pH issues in the dirt, working on that, and hoping for some better results this season. One thing the wife and I decided is to NOT grow into the fall again. I was pulling plants the same weekend I started my seeds. I'm using 4 2 bulb T8's with 6,500K bulbs, and 1 4 bulb T5 with I believe 6,500K bulbs.

So here's the list:

few months behind, just getting caught up here. things are looking good over your way Scott, even with the weather. I really like the table full of tomatoes, should keep you stocked up on fresh salsa for a while.

Nice work, take care bud

Thanks Anthony

5 1/2 gallons of the canned maters went into a pot of Tomato sauce this evening. It will cook for 2 days. The grand kids love the stuff and of course so do I. I'll be making hot sauce next weekend. Tomorrow I have to cook a brisket and grind up 2 for chopped meat, after I finish painting the house. I hope to finish that chore next weekend ;)

EDIT: the recipe for the sauce is @ http://www.devtex.net/recipe.html along with some others...

Wow! That growdown plant is huge! The rest of the garden is looking pretty awesome as well.

Thanks Troy!

They're really struggling in this killer heat. Soon the days will be shorter and we'll start to cool down some. I'm ready!

So earlier in the season I mentioned making a new charcoal kiln, or retort.

This design is the best I've played with.

Lock the lid on the 55gallon barrel, finish filling the wood to even with the top of the tank, and light. I used 1/2 of a 300 gal propane tank, welded a flat bottom on and hinged the top 6"s above the 55 barrel. Added a chimney. I have 4 bucks invested in this project not including the 55 gallon barrel.

Looks were not part of the project. I had a scrap piece of 4.5" pipe for a stack, it leans= less work...LOL

Foot in pic for reference :shh: Now to crush and turn under

Nice! Now that you're taking care of increasing your soil's nutrient holding capacity with the biochar, you should check into granular humates to help with extraction and further increase holding. Have you got any scavenger crops planted where you pulled up the 'maters?

I need to get off my ads and build some things. I need a charcoal maker and a solar dehydrator. A greenhouse would be nice too. I have a hard time get to g motivation when its 95-100 out.

I'm glad you liked the sauce. My friend makes a pineapple sauce I really like so I was going for a sweet sauce. Added tomato to help it out on the tacos lol. I want to make a tomato based sauce at some point

No crops planted at this time. Temps are too high. We're at 97-101° as an average since June. I'd like to plant something, but if I'm no longer tilling, it's tough to knock it down.

And I will be looking at humates after I do a winter soil test.

I started making charcoal about 12 years ago. Mainly because I have a ton of Mesquite here and I like to play :shh: That and charcoal is expensive.

One day while cooking a batch I was sitting on the porch drinking a Shiner and reading National Geographic. They had an article about Terra Preta. Read up on that stuff! Then you'll see why Rick and I are into biochar...

The easiest way is a 55 gal drum and a 35 gal drum Here's a link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svNg5w7WY0k  this is what my latest design came from.

Thanks again for the sauce! I had it with dinner the other night, good stuff!

Terra Preta. Is that the place in a jungle somewhere with really good soil from charcoal being added hundreds of years ago?

Guess I will just Google it lol

Hey Andy,

Yeppers, it's amazing. About 10 or 12 years ago I added 2-3"s to the garden and tilled it in. Year one, I grew corn in that area and an untreated spot.  The difference was amazing. The farmers in the area of the Amazon where the Terra Preta is found state that they have farmed the same dirt for 40 years without having to fertilize. Now that's crazy!

I watched a YouTube video where they were using flour to activate the charcoal. I imagine it would activate once it went in the garden anyway

I have this product lying around. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008688H3A/ref=oh_aui_i_r_o0_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Just starting to research this. Can it be used? At what application rate? Does it require a waiting period before planting to be leached or seasoned? Your glog is maybe not the right venue for all my questions, but thanks anyway.

About 8-10 years ago (I lose track) I made enough char to cover a 40x40' area with close to 3"s, and simply turned it in with the tiller. It most definitely made a difference.
This last batch of 40 gallons didn't go very far. I spread it out at a rate of about 1/2" deep by 18"s wide. And it covered about 70% of what I wanted it to. The main purpose is to trap nutrients that would normally leach out of the soil. Just think how well charcoal acts as a filter.

I'll make more when time allows.
