I recall in my botany class many moons ago that there tends to be an inverse relationship between how much a plant produces and how large it gets. He had the example of a tomato plant. The plant itself was huge and had its vines all over the place, yet it had a smaller yield (and smaller tomatoes) than a plant much smaller. He said it had a lot to do with the plant needing a lot more resources to maintain itself instead of producing fruit.

It looks like the one in the ground is about to produce a few hundred blooms, you may have to wait till the end of the season to make any comparison about total yield. Also, different levels of sun and the color of reflected light may vary, the relevant variables may be more than just pot vs ground.
