DocNrock's 2013 Glog - 7/11/13

My 2013 grow officially began 10/14/2012, when seeds hit soil. After seeing Fernando (SocalChilehead) growing in his greenhouse "sanctuary" and KiNGDeNNiZ continuing to start new growth in his AeroGarden, as well as the community HP22B grow thread already being 8 pages, I broke down and started my 2013 grow. I was going to limit it to 50 varieties, but that ended up being 64, 77 including the plants I want to save from 2012. If some varieties don't pop or I end up losing some along the way, I might still be down to 50 (or less!) in no time. The grow list with pop dates is at the bottom of this post.

Since I had plenty of seeds I wanted to try an experiment. Which is better for germination, soil or Rapid Rooters? I have two mini-greenhouses with 36 soil cups each, and one mini-greenhouse with a 72 cell insert loaded with Rapid Rooters. All seeds were soaked overnight in water that had been boiled and cooled and contained a dilution of brewed chamomile tea and H2O2. The Rapid Rooters and soil were both moistened with the same mix. The soil is Sungro Sunshine mix #1 amended lightly with Ancient Forest and worm castings. Wondering if the organisms in the amendments might help break down the seed coat. Each cell contains about five seeds. This will force me to cull the weaklings, as opposed to trying to save them, hahaha! At most I will end up with two seedlings for each variety. If both survive, I can try to gift one of the two. I am thinking that some varieties may germinate better in soil, some better in the Rapid Rooters, and for some it may not make a difference. I read somewhere that kelp solutions are rich in growth hormones. Has anyone added a light kelp solution dilution to their germination setup? I was thinking of adding a couple of drops to each Rapid Rooter cell. Fert-wise, the kelp solutions are very, very weak. I doubt it would do any harm. Has anyone ever tried the kelp? I have not, but might try it later on anything that seems stubborn to sprout.

I am hoping these guys are all budded up come springtime, and ready for an early harvest. Since my indoor space is limited, I am giving serious consideration to building a small greenhouse in the backyard and putting in a couple of space heaters for the night time. I decided against a raised bed, and will probably go with 5 gallon Root Pouches for the larger plants. Some of the annuums and plants I'm as yet unsure of I will grow in 2 gallon pots. If I end up liking them, I can always up-pot them.

Getting organized:

Man, I hope I didn't mix any of these up! 64 cups to keep straight is a far cry from 3. It will be 6 months until I know for sure!:

Let the waiting game begin!:

Also, in case anyone is interested, the white plastic labelling tags are available at Discount Hydroponics, $2.95/100! Cheaper than popsickle sticks!

Regarding the plants I already have, I am going to try to start cuttings off most of them in the event the plants don't make it over the winter. I won't need to start those from seed, although there are four varieties (Douglah, Fatalii, Barrackpore and Yellow Bhut) I am starting from seed, as well.

Question: When we start a new grow season, is it typical to just add to one's glog thread, or is it appropriate to start a new thread for the new grow year?

Anyway, happy growing to you all and thanks for looking. I'm hoping all the lessons I learned this year will help me to make this grow much more successful!

GROW LIST: I will try to edit in pop dates for both soil and Rapid Rooters. The Rapid Rooters might get earlier pop dates since I can see the rootlets before hooks form.

I'm going to do my best to keep one of each alive, but with 77 total, I might be lucky if a few croak!

Amazing plants. Very impressive.

These bursts of cold are driving me crazy as well. I think tonight is going to be the last of the real danger, but I've said that and been wrong 3 times this year.

Thank you, and thanks for stopping in, SJ! I hear ya on the intermittent frosts. I thought we'd be done with them by early February. Hoping this is the last one!

Nice looking plants. I see them out in the sun as a big snowstorm is hitting me tonight lol.

I noticed your white bags with peppers. My big pots I ordered are black, should I paint them white. I know black will get hotter, especially in full sun. Sounds like the right thing to do, but it will look like crap.

He's using grow bags, pretty cheap to buy at your local hydro store. They are white on the outside and black on the inside. The white is on the outside to reflect on nearby plants under a grow light. On the inside they are black to heat the soil. I don't know how much of a difference those colors really make under a light, but if you're growing outside in Indiana I would recommend the black outside to keep the pots warmer.

Things are looking great at your place Doc... love the money shots of ripening pods. We've still got at least another 6 weeks before plant-out here, so please keep the pics coming!

Yup, grow bags. For the 2 gallon size they were $1.79 for 10! I'm thinking of doing most of my grow with the 5 gallon ones when they outgrow these. We get well over 100 here in the summer and I'm thinking the white outside might help keep the roots a bit cooler, as well. How hot does it get in the Indiana summer, Bodeen? Fadetoblack, I believe, is in the Bahamas and he painted his pots white to keep the roots cooler. It looked OK, but seemed like a LOT of work. Hopefully spring will come soon for you! For now, we have had a frost for the last three nights, so my plants are safe back in the g-house.

Thanks Rick, but it must be a camera anomaly. Nothing ripening yet. They seem to be taking their time. I'm hoping to get them outdoors permanently in a couple of weeks! Pulling for ya on the spring thing!

We get in the triple digits here in summer. I think that is why my chenzo peppers were a bit stunted. Still produced pods, but in the ground would be a lot better.

Hydro Store LOL This is Indiana, I think my closest one of those would be Chicago or Indy. I might have to break out the white paint or perhaps a white wrap for the containers.

You can always order online: http://www.discount-hydro.com/products/Grow-Bags.html

My Chenzo stayed small, also. I thought that was normal, as I believe it was bred to be a patio plant. Still very productive, though.

No update for this weekend. Taking my car out to the track! First time in nearly two years! Have fun, all. I'm sure I'll have quite a few updates to look at over the next week. ;)

I'll try! Will definitely have in-car video. Here is quick 2 minute video of my personal best lap at this particular track, from back in 2010. Car: 2009 Nissan GT-R, modded, 550 awhp and 560 awtq. She's fast. :) Onboard video and data by Traqmate.

Whoa Wild Brent Andretti ... very cool, think I seen you hit 150mph + … have fun this weekend!

*wild doc Brent video*

pretty gnarly!

Hahaha! Thanks, guys! Yesterday was fun, but I realized I'm very rusty. I'd done about 20 track days between 2009 and 2011, then nothing since 5/11. By the end of the day it was coming back, though. I was getting held up by traffic. Hoping for better lap times today. Now if those ZR1's and GT3's would just get out of my way. Also was getting held up by a Lambo. Anyone can drive a fast car. Only a few can drive a car fast. ;)

Oh, and checked on the chile plants when I got home. Continued growth...which is nice. :onfire:

Wow.....you are blessed to be able to do that my friend. Very, very cool. I cannot say that I'm not envious. Badass.

Plants look nice too.....lol

Awesome vid Doc!

Thanks! Tracking is so much fun. It is hard to describe. When I did my first track day back in 2009, I never intended for it to become a hobby. I had just bought my GT-R a couple of months prior and wanted to be able to stretch its legs, so to speak, in a controlled environment. Doing so on the street would not be safe, sane, or legal. ;) After that track day was over and I was driving home, I thought, "I HAVE to do that again!"

Nice. You guys and your other hobbies. DR.. Grower... Race car diver. Very nice. I plan on doing a BBQ sometime in late June. Hoping us SoCal growers will have pods to share already

Don't forget guitar player.

Doc, we need some guitar pics on the glog to compete with the car. :D
