DocNrock's 2013 Glog - 7/11/13

My 2013 grow officially began 10/14/2012, when seeds hit soil. After seeing Fernando (SocalChilehead) growing in his greenhouse "sanctuary" and KiNGDeNNiZ continuing to start new growth in his AeroGarden, as well as the community HP22B grow thread already being 8 pages, I broke down and started my 2013 grow. I was going to limit it to 50 varieties, but that ended up being 64, 77 including the plants I want to save from 2012. If some varieties don't pop or I end up losing some along the way, I might still be down to 50 (or less!) in no time. The grow list with pop dates is at the bottom of this post.

Since I had plenty of seeds I wanted to try an experiment. Which is better for germination, soil or Rapid Rooters? I have two mini-greenhouses with 36 soil cups each, and one mini-greenhouse with a 72 cell insert loaded with Rapid Rooters. All seeds were soaked overnight in water that had been boiled and cooled and contained a dilution of brewed chamomile tea and H2O2. The Rapid Rooters and soil were both moistened with the same mix. The soil is Sungro Sunshine mix #1 amended lightly with Ancient Forest and worm castings. Wondering if the organisms in the amendments might help break down the seed coat. Each cell contains about five seeds. This will force me to cull the weaklings, as opposed to trying to save them, hahaha! At most I will end up with two seedlings for each variety. If both survive, I can try to gift one of the two. I am thinking that some varieties may germinate better in soil, some better in the Rapid Rooters, and for some it may not make a difference. I read somewhere that kelp solutions are rich in growth hormones. Has anyone added a light kelp solution dilution to their germination setup? I was thinking of adding a couple of drops to each Rapid Rooter cell. Fert-wise, the kelp solutions are very, very weak. I doubt it would do any harm. Has anyone ever tried the kelp? I have not, but might try it later on anything that seems stubborn to sprout.

I am hoping these guys are all budded up come springtime, and ready for an early harvest. Since my indoor space is limited, I am giving serious consideration to building a small greenhouse in the backyard and putting in a couple of space heaters for the night time. I decided against a raised bed, and will probably go with 5 gallon Root Pouches for the larger plants. Some of the annuums and plants I'm as yet unsure of I will grow in 2 gallon pots. If I end up liking them, I can always up-pot them.

Getting organized:

Man, I hope I didn't mix any of these up! 64 cups to keep straight is a far cry from 3. It will be 6 months until I know for sure!:

Let the waiting game begin!:

Also, in case anyone is interested, the white plastic labelling tags are available at Discount Hydroponics, $2.95/100! Cheaper than popsickle sticks!

Regarding the plants I already have, I am going to try to start cuttings off most of them in the event the plants don't make it over the winter. I won't need to start those from seed, although there are four varieties (Douglah, Fatalii, Barrackpore and Yellow Bhut) I am starting from seed, as well.

Question: When we start a new grow season, is it typical to just add to one's glog thread, or is it appropriate to start a new thread for the new grow year?

Anyway, happy growing to you all and thanks for looking. I'm hoping all the lessons I learned this year will help me to make this grow much more successful!

GROW LIST: I will try to edit in pop dates for both soil and Rapid Rooters. The Rapid Rooters might get earlier pop dates since I can see the rootlets before hooks form.

Now that is smome smooth ass riding Doc Hudson!!!!!! My son is gonna love watching the vid :woohoo:
Thanks Jaime! When I first started my instructors drilled into my head that smooth driving is the key to fast driving. Hope your son enjoyed the vid!
Healthy looking plants Doc! Well done... looks like you are going to be chowing down on some heat soon!

Thanks.

It was so awesome getting back out the the track again. It took a couple of days just to get within two seconds of my personal best (PB) laptime I set for myself in 2010. With the Traqmate data acquisition system, not only can I record the sessions with data/video and review them later, it also allows the user to break the track down to segments and the software has the ability to generate a theoretical best lap (TBL). It will automatically splice together one's fastest time through each segment into a complete lap. My PB "real" lap in 2010 was 1:51.450. My best real lap this past weekend was a 1:53.414. There is so much time left on the table that I am frankly embarrassed to post the video of that lap. My TBL was 1:51.643, so I'll post that video, instead. Even then, I literally see seconds of time left on the table, at least three seconds. Next time out...

Hopefully this weekend I can update the peppers and catch up on the glogs of others. My wife is having a minor operation on Friday, however, so she will be my first priority. Take care, everyone, and thanks for looking!

Man the data that Traqmate records is very cool, you almost make it look like a video game ;) Sorry to hear about the operation, I pray all goes well for the two of you. Take care and have a good great weekend :)

Hope all goes well for the misses!
Good luck with your wife's proceedure, I'm sure you'll be dancing attendance this weekend... ;)
My thought are with you, and sending good vibes to your wife. Sofia'll splrinkle a little extra pixie dust for her ;)

Thanks, guys! The operation went very well. The plan was to admit her overnight, but she did so well she was discharged home to my care. It doesn't hurt that her surgeon is one of my partners in practice. She's doing great!

Yesterday afternoon I got home early from work and moved the plants out of the g-house since we're supposed to have at least 10 days without a frost. We are, however, supposed to have winds for a couple of days, so every plant tall enough to be at risk got staked (if it didn't already have one). They looked good today when we got home from the hospital. Of course, I waited until she was comfortable before checking on my plants. ;)

I'll try to snap a few pics this weekend between my "nursing" duties. Many of these plants are getting BIG! My Aji Lemon is probably just under 5 feet tall. More of the annuums are podding up. More flowers on the chinenses, and I think the Dorset Naga is about to set a pod.

I had a couple of plants starting an aphid infestation again. Fortunately I was able to squish and pinch to control them. Praying mantis eggs haven't hatched yet...come on, guys! I need ya! ;)

The not-Yellow Scotch Bonnet is probably a Jamaican Yellow Mushroom. Shane called it!

The not-Australian Lantern Hab is getting more interesting. If anyone remembers, it looks annuum-ish, the flowers are white with a purple rim, and it was making a slender, elongated pod. This pod is no way old enough to be ripening, but it is starting to turn brown. I wonder what color it will turn when ripe. Are there any annuums that fit this description?

The clones are really coming along nicely. All clones except the Aji Panca clones are flowering (never got a flower on the parent plant, either...hmmmm). Small pods are on the Caribbean Red, Chinese 5-color, and Chenzo clones.

If I didn't post it already, major thanks again to both Shane and Jamison for the Devil's Tongue White seeds! Looks like I'll be growing two plants of this strain since I sowed seeds from both packs and have seedlings from both! WooHoo! I knew Jason (GA Growhead) had the same luck I did with this strain, so I sent him the seeds I had leftover. I'm pretty sure Shane and Jamison would approve.

I'll try to get caught up on everyone else's glogs between my nursing duties this weekend. ;)

Awesome rundown Doc! Yes def glad Jason got them seeds. He's a great guy! Looking forward to seeing pics. Best wishes to the wifey and you!

Thanks bud! Wifey is doing better than expected! Should be able to snap some pics later today. Plants seem to be lovin' the sunshine.

Question for anyone who happens across this: For varieties that don't change color when ripe (TS Green, Pimente de Neyde), how do you know when they are ripe?

Nice yellow mushrooms are good as well no Lisa there. As for the ripe. U think the TS green turns yellowish green. No heat at all with a different taste. The PDN. Don't know.
Clones ?! Wow and here PG thought I was his competition. I've only cloned 4. And after 30 days. My manzano clones are dying. (didn't root). Good job with the plants. And nice to see your wife's surgery went well. Remember my FIL had his cabg x4. Well 3 weeks ago her mom had C-section. ( small intestines was trapped by uterus and and wall causing pain. All went well.

Here's to a good week in SoCal. I did see rains in the bay area. So sometime next week Wr might get a lil more

Ugh.... I would have such a problem with my hubby going 130 MPH anywhere. If I dont know fine. If I know... Problem. I didnt like that at all. Plants look great tho

Yellow Mushroom peppers are great...but I already have another one. Oh well, nothing wrong with two. Thanks for the info on the TS Green. No competitor here, just learning from you and PaulyG. Your Wife's Mother had a C-section? Weather has been awesome the last couple of days. Looks like it will hold up for a while.

Aww, come on Pia. To be honest, I feel safer on the track at 150+ than I do on the freeway at the speed limit. At least on track there is room around you and the other drivers are far more skilled than the vast majority of the freeway drivers. And everyone is going the same direction.

Anyway, thanks for checkin' in!

Ya know Doc, your right. It's the speed that throws me. If I was driving at150, and he was in the passenger seat, no problem. Ahaahaaa
Hahaha! I knew you had it in you! It's all good. I've noticed that people who don't track see the speed and think crazy dangerous. But I think the speed is being considered in the context of their driving experience, ie., on a public road. Which I would agree is total insanity. Honestly, crashes are extremely rare at these open track events. They are very well run with safety being the prime consideration.
Aight Doc...'nuff of these fast cars and fast women ^ ^ ^ ^, let get on with some pics of them bad boys in da garden!!!
I was just getting started, Shane. ;) Seriously though, ask and you shall receive.

Annuums and baccatums. The really tall one on the left is the Aji Yellow. It is finally starting to bud.

Shane, I think you called it. Not-Yellow Scotch Bonnet is probably a Yellow Mushroom. It's funny. I got the seeds from Ajijoe and he was really surprised, as he said this one grew true for him.

notYSB_zpsf133dad2.jpg

Not-Australian Lantern Hab. The pods start green then pretty quickly turn black. I wonder what this is, some sort of cross or a stray seed from a different variety. Annuum, white flowers with a purple rim.

notALH_zps66c80b63.jpg

Dorset Naga flower. Is that the beginnings of a pod?

Dorset_zps0a4c4e67.jpg

Red Rocoto. I think this one is going to make it. It was really stalled when it was a seedling, then all of a sudden started growing. After potting up, it has continued to grow.

RR2_zpsbcd8a3c5.jpg

That's it for now. Thanks for looking!

Looking good. Hey, Doc, what brand of grow bags are you using? Thanks.

Edit: PS - What size are those?

Nice update Doc! I think he might be where I got the seeds from as well. There is an annuum Scotch Bonnet that is very similar to either the Yellow Mushroom or the Jamaican Hot Yellow. Mine last year were some of my favorite plants for sure...VERY hot for an annuum and you can taste a little chinense hiding in the flavor profile too.
