DocNrock's 2013 Glog - 7/11/13

My 2013 grow officially began 10/14/2012, when seeds hit soil. After seeing Fernando (SocalChilehead) growing in his greenhouse "sanctuary" and KiNGDeNNiZ continuing to start new growth in his AeroGarden, as well as the community HP22B grow thread already being 8 pages, I broke down and started my 2013 grow. I was going to limit it to 50 varieties, but that ended up being 64, 77 including the plants I want to save from 2012. If some varieties don't pop or I end up losing some along the way, I might still be down to 50 (or less!) in no time. The grow list with pop dates is at the bottom of this post.

Since I had plenty of seeds I wanted to try an experiment. Which is better for germination, soil or Rapid Rooters? I have two mini-greenhouses with 36 soil cups each, and one mini-greenhouse with a 72 cell insert loaded with Rapid Rooters. All seeds were soaked overnight in water that had been boiled and cooled and contained a dilution of brewed chamomile tea and H2O2. The Rapid Rooters and soil were both moistened with the same mix. The soil is Sungro Sunshine mix #1 amended lightly with Ancient Forest and worm castings. Wondering if the organisms in the amendments might help break down the seed coat. Each cell contains about five seeds. This will force me to cull the weaklings, as opposed to trying to save them, hahaha! At most I will end up with two seedlings for each variety. If both survive, I can try to gift one of the two. I am thinking that some varieties may germinate better in soil, some better in the Rapid Rooters, and for some it may not make a difference. I read somewhere that kelp solutions are rich in growth hormones. Has anyone added a light kelp solution dilution to their germination setup? I was thinking of adding a couple of drops to each Rapid Rooter cell. Fert-wise, the kelp solutions are very, very weak. I doubt it would do any harm. Has anyone ever tried the kelp? I have not, but might try it later on anything that seems stubborn to sprout.

I am hoping these guys are all budded up come springtime, and ready for an early harvest. Since my indoor space is limited, I am giving serious consideration to building a small greenhouse in the backyard and putting in a couple of space heaters for the night time. I decided against a raised bed, and will probably go with 5 gallon Root Pouches for the larger plants. Some of the annuums and plants I'm as yet unsure of I will grow in 2 gallon pots. If I end up liking them, I can always up-pot them.

Getting organized:

Man, I hope I didn't mix any of these up! 64 cups to keep straight is a far cry from 3. It will be 6 months until I know for sure!:

Let the waiting game begin!:

Also, in case anyone is interested, the white plastic labelling tags are available at Discount Hydroponics, $2.95/100! Cheaper than popsickle sticks!

Regarding the plants I already have, I am going to try to start cuttings off most of them in the event the plants don't make it over the winter. I won't need to start those from seed, although there are four varieties (Douglah, Fatalii, Barrackpore and Yellow Bhut) I am starting from seed, as well.

Question: When we start a new grow season, is it typical to just add to one's glog thread, or is it appropriate to start a new thread for the new grow year?

Anyway, happy growing to you all and thanks for looking. I'm hoping all the lessons I learned this year will help me to make this grow much more successful!

GROW LIST: I will try to edit in pop dates for both soil and Rapid Rooters. The Rapid Rooters might get earlier pop dates since I can see the rootlets before hooks form.

I'm going to do my best to keep one of each alive, but with 77 total, I might be lucky if a few croak!

On-call this weekend so no time for chile-related duties. I did feed everyone yesterday after getting home from work and snapped some pics.

Not-Yellow Scotch Bonnet (Ajijoe). Agree with Shane, pretty sure it is a Jamaican Yellow Mushroom. Anyway, it had four little surprises for me:

Dorset Naga (Pepperlover.com) pods starting to get bumpy:

Primo pod getting larger (Primo):

Black Stinger (RFC):

7 Pot Congo SR Gigantic (Pepperlover.com):

7 Pot Yellow (Biscgolf):

Chocolate Scorpion (KingDenniz):

Peach Habanero (Ajijoe):

Red Brain (Baker's):

PI281317 (Pepperlover.com):

Bump anyone?

that primo looks like its going to be hot :onfire:

Doesn't it, though? Really looking forward to that one ripening. Thanks for the bump, Jason!

Yellow Hablokia (Ajijoe):

Pointed Yellow Hab (PaulG):

Yellow TSMB (RFC):

Malawi Peppadew (RFC):

Peach Bhut (Ajijoe):

Royal Black (Ajijoe):

Andy F-1 Gochu (Stickman):

I also thought I'd show a few small plants to thank those who provided me seeds for them.

When my Devil's Tongue White never popped, Shane and Jamison came to the rescue! You two are awesome! Then again, so is everyone else I've encountered on this board.

Devil's Tongue White (stc3248):

This shot has three plants I grew from seed provided by Jamison, including the DTW. Trinidad Perfume and DTW in back, and Armageddon F-2 in front:

Finally, Trinidad Seasoning (Jamison). This seedling really stalled. It was yellow for a long time, but seemed alive so I haven't given up on it. After fertilizing it, it greened up but that was about it. After a couple more rounds of ferts, it is trying to add new growth. It may or may not pull out of it's funk, but as long as it isn't dead, I'll keep it around.

That's it for now! Again, hopefully not picture overload. This season's growing experience is so much more rewarding than my attempt last year. I'm finally getting pods that look like pods!

Thanks for looking and I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Brent

Amazing shots Doc. Just perfect pod porn buddy. I love living vicariously through yours and others glogs. Makes me think there is hope for the weather here. The Trinidad Seasoning is funny little guy. I had a Naga Morich last year just like that, wouldn't grow for shit. End of the year it was one of my most productive in grounds last year. Stayed really small but put out some pods. Hope you don't get too many calls this weekend! Enjoy the weather bud!

they are podding up nicely... great job!
Thanks Sy! Having a blast with these things now that pods are forming...and actually look like they are supposed to!
Doc what are you medicating those plants with, they all seem to have podidus :D Great pics & happy weekend mon!
Ramon, always love your witty posts. I just give them my little nutrient cocktail every other week. Thanks for stopping in, mon!

Thanks, bro! Appreciate the kind words and glad I can help you get through the tail end of winter. I'm hoping that Trini Seasoning does just what your Naga Morich did. The weekend is always like a grab bag. I don't mind it if it is crazy busy all day each day, as long as it is quiet at night. Hoping for few to no middle of the night emergencies!

Looking good doc. Podding up and sending te seeds already ehh. That Jamaican hot. Yellow /mushroom looks different from my last years grow. Regardless. It'll be good. Glad your Armageddon sprouted as mine failed. And nice to see the gochus look. Now I know what to expect.
Jamison. Still sowing I see.

Thanks, King! It was the least I could do since I had fresh Golden Cayenne seeds and there were a couple of people in need. The Not-Yellow Scotch Bonnet looks a bit different than my Jamaican Yellow Mushroom I grew last year, as well. It is an annuum, so it definitely is not a Yellow Scotch Bonnet. Not quite sure what it really is, but it seems closest to the Jam Yellow Mushroom. I'm having a cut up pod with dinner tonight. It is a bit higher than usual Jalapeno heat and has a fruity flavor to it. I like it. I'll save the seeds and grow it next year.

I have to try to get caught up on everyone else's glogs over the weekend. I feel like I've been slacking in that regard.

Awesome poddage you got going on over there Doc.... Any sampling done this weekend or are you going to wait on trying em?

Great stuff doc!!! Pods everywhere!
Thanks Bro! I know you've been crazy busy, so thanks for taking the time to look! Your plants are podding up nicely, as well!
Great guns Doc! That glog is going ballistic! Awesome stuff!
Thanks, Lourens! Not nearly the grow that you had, but more than enough for me!
Doc, they sure are taking off, pods galore!

You got my vote for the green thumb hand club!

Have a great weekend,

Scott
Thanks for stopping in, Scott! It's funny, in the past, anything I tried to grow I promptly managed to kill. Of the plants I seriously tried to grow last year, only the strong survived! But I learned enough from the good folks on this board to keep the majority of my grow going this year. So far, I've only lost two plants, knock on wood. Infinity died from lack of water and my Siling Labuyo died from I don't know what.
Awesome poddage you got going on over there Doc.... Any sampling done this weekend or are you going to wait on trying em?
Thanks, Portuge! I've had a couple ripen here and there over the past few weeks. So far I've tried the Golden Cayenne, Serrano, Jalapeno, not-PI281317, and most recently the not-yellow scotch bonnet. So far the Golden Cayenne has been the hottest. Also tried the Pasilla Bajio, but they weren't ripe. Regarding the others, I'm going to let them ripen before sampling.

Speaking of ripening, I just noticed my first ripe Korean Gochu from Rick (stickman), off the Andy F-1 plant. I'm going to let it stay on the plant for another day or two before trying it.

Also, there is a flower on one of my Aji Panca clones. This is huge for me. Last year I bought an Aji Panca plant from RFC. It grew to be my largest plant, a bit over three feet tall, but never had a single flower. Buds would start to form, then they would shrivel up, turn black, and fall off. Why, I have no idea. When I wanted to learn cloning I used it since it wasn't productive and there were plenty of branches to it. I ended up with three clones. Funny though, the original plant died during out last frost despite the fact it was shielded from the cold. Anyway, I noticed the clones are budding up. Yesterday, one of the buds opened into a flower. Awesome. Hopefully it will set a pod. We'll see.

Having fresh one with dinner . . . mmm. Beautiful grow, Doc, what kind of white bags you using? Any special requirements for watering, etc? Are they dirt bags . . . I probably missed it in your glog. Thinking of alts to n-pots this year! (I rarely do containers for anything other than cilantro. GORGEOUS work! And yeah, you been talking/sharing with Kevin/Wayright on "plant juice" ;)? Joke: I know Kev gives few of his steroid secrets away  Peace, stunning plants! Annie

Beautiful pics Doc. Im sure that seedling will come around. I have a few like that also and my orange scorpion is so yellow its almost translucent but its putting out new growth like crazy. What is that about?!??!?! Keep up the great work and Yup Jamison and Shane are two hellava guys.
