DocNrock's 2013 Glog - 7/11/13

My 2013 grow officially began 10/14/2012, when seeds hit soil. After seeing Fernando (SocalChilehead) growing in his greenhouse "sanctuary" and KiNGDeNNiZ continuing to start new growth in his AeroGarden, as well as the community HP22B grow thread already being 8 pages, I broke down and started my 2013 grow. I was going to limit it to 50 varieties, but that ended up being 64, 77 including the plants I want to save from 2012. If some varieties don't pop or I end up losing some along the way, I might still be down to 50 (or less!) in no time. The grow list with pop dates is at the bottom of this post.

Since I had plenty of seeds I wanted to try an experiment. Which is better for germination, soil or Rapid Rooters? I have two mini-greenhouses with 36 soil cups each, and one mini-greenhouse with a 72 cell insert loaded with Rapid Rooters. All seeds were soaked overnight in water that had been boiled and cooled and contained a dilution of brewed chamomile tea and H2O2. The Rapid Rooters and soil were both moistened with the same mix. The soil is Sungro Sunshine mix #1 amended lightly with Ancient Forest and worm castings. Wondering if the organisms in the amendments might help break down the seed coat. Each cell contains about five seeds. This will force me to cull the weaklings, as opposed to trying to save them, hahaha! At most I will end up with two seedlings for each variety. If both survive, I can try to gift one of the two. I am thinking that some varieties may germinate better in soil, some better in the Rapid Rooters, and for some it may not make a difference. I read somewhere that kelp solutions are rich in growth hormones. Has anyone added a light kelp solution dilution to their germination setup? I was thinking of adding a couple of drops to each Rapid Rooter cell. Fert-wise, the kelp solutions are very, very weak. I doubt it would do any harm. Has anyone ever tried the kelp? I have not, but might try it later on anything that seems stubborn to sprout.

I am hoping these guys are all budded up come springtime, and ready for an early harvest. Since my indoor space is limited, I am giving serious consideration to building a small greenhouse in the backyard and putting in a couple of space heaters for the night time. I decided against a raised bed, and will probably go with 5 gallon Root Pouches for the larger plants. Some of the annuums and plants I'm as yet unsure of I will grow in 2 gallon pots. If I end up liking them, I can always up-pot them.

Getting organized:

Man, I hope I didn't mix any of these up! 64 cups to keep straight is a far cry from 3. It will be 6 months until I know for sure!:

Let the waiting game begin!:

Also, in case anyone is interested, the white plastic labelling tags are available at Discount Hydroponics, $2.95/100! Cheaper than popsickle sticks!

Regarding the plants I already have, I am going to try to start cuttings off most of them in the event the plants don't make it over the winter. I won't need to start those from seed, although there are four varieties (Douglah, Fatalii, Barrackpore and Yellow Bhut) I am starting from seed, as well.

Question: When we start a new grow season, is it typical to just add to one's glog thread, or is it appropriate to start a new thread for the new grow year?

Anyway, happy growing to you all and thanks for looking. I'm hoping all the lessons I learned this year will help me to make this grow much more successful!

GROW LIST: I will try to edit in pop dates for both soil and Rapid Rooters. The Rapid Rooters might get earlier pop dates since I can see the rootlets before hooks form.

[background=rgb(255, 244, 228)]So true! Looking good, and the work has just begun. Harder to see the rewards you're reaping through your hard work during this part of the grow. Later on the work will be much more intense with the harvesting, but the rewards are much sweeter. So...more work now=more work later+bigger rewards...I like that math! Keep them green Doc...you're going to have some crazy pulls later this season![/background]

Nice update!

Those plants are getting huge, and certainly have the root system to support lots of pods!

Can't wait to see the results.

Scott

PS. The car had a serious lope at idle (1,100 rpm) just a single carb:(

Wow man soooo busy over in CA! Dude, things are looking amazing and so many plants Doc! And the little Primo is too cool man. I cannot wait til mine pod up. Have you ever looked at your plants and thought " oh wow what is this beast here" and then you look at the plant tag and think to yourself, " this thing is gonna be a giant". Just happened to me tonight looking at a Primo, too excited. You got it goin on for sure my brotha!
Awesome, Jamison! The Primo definitely seems to be a favorite, for sure. Sounds like yours is going to crank out the pods, as well! It's so funny you said that about "oh wow what is this beast here?" That happened to me a couple of weeks ago looking at my 7 Pot Yellow. I couldn't believe how thick it's stalk was. Thanks Bro, and thanks for stopping in! Another benefit to getting the plants out and inspecting them closely was finding hidden early pods. HP22B has officially joined the pod-makers, as has Chocolate Scorpion, Pointed Yellow Hab, Peach Hab, and quite a few others.

Isn't that the truth, my friend! But it is the end game that I am keeping in mind to motivate me through the work now. Looking at the way some of these are podding up, and the others that are flowering and/or are loaded with buds, you might be right about the pulls! I'm thinking my strategy paid off. This is why I started in October. I wanted flowers on the plants in Spring and hoped the plants would be mature enough for them to set into pods. If flowering started in Summer, I'd be looking at flowers dropping all Summer waiting for Fall. I'm also hoping that the pods that ripen during the Summer are going to be blistering hot! We'll see. Thanks for stopping in, my friend!

Thanks Scott, and thanks for stopping in! Love the sound of a cammed V8...good ol' American Muscle. Aw, a single carb was probably plenty for a 283. Pretty sure it must have at least been a 4 bbl. Save the doubles for the big blocks! Hehehe, I'm showing my age, too. ;)

EDIT: just went to my first post to edit the title. So funny seeing the germ cells immediately after sowing and knowing what the plants look like now. Hindsight, retrospect, whatever you want to call it.

Im sure you going to have some blistering hot pods! Before summer even. Look forward to seeing what that reaper pod grows into. I was gifted 3 seeds and are apart of that club too now.

G T R!!!!!!!
I love my GT-R! Pretty sure I will never sell it. BTW, it's modded: 550 awhp and 540 awtq. Equates to about 680 at the crank. :)
Nice update Doc... it looks like you've got so much going on at home that your time isn't your own when you get there! ;) Keep 'em green buddy.
Thanks for stopping in, bud! I think you pretty much summed that one up, haha! Kapia is about a foot tall now. :)

Awesome, Jason! Right now it's just a little nub where the flower was, but stem has kept it's color and is firmly attached. Some of my more recent Dorset Nagas are more elongated and are starting to get bumpy. :)

Great update...I like the photo's, one's glog can never be too heavy with'em.

Your car must be a blast to drive......cool !

Thanks, Greg. It always means a lot coming from growing gurus like yourself.

I love the GT-R. It is a fun daily driver, but it is insanely fun on a race track!

Excellent looking plants! It looks like everything is rocking and rolling right now!

I agree that it is sometimes better to snip early pods, but there is some disagreement on that point. Did you make anything with the pods you cut, or were they too green?

Great to read you finally getting some heat from your Serrano, mine have heat too as I stated back when we discussed them but it’s a far cry from the heat of our other peppers. Are you picking them red as I have been? I’m going to try one out a green one as mi bush is loaded with them now and I see them for sale that way around here. Hopefully it’ll have more heat this way, IDK. Everything else is looking great, keep up dat killer grow :)

Thanks, Stefan! Yeah, the annuums are keeping me entertained with the occasional ripening pod, but now the chinenses are starting to pod up! WooHoo! After reading this, I saw your post about the nachos and the "sacrificed" Jalapenos. ;) In my case, the plant seemed stalled and the pods were taking forever to ripen, so I relieved it of it's burden. It's funny, I hadn't done anything with them, yet. After seeing your nachos, guess what I made with them. :) They were good.
Check this out buddy, some of your Golden Cayenne offspring  Thanks again man!
Awesome! They grow fast and produce early so you should be in great shape for this season with them.
Nice update there Doc, plants always love getting new shoes :)
Thanks RM and thanks for stopping in! Yup, they're running in their new Nikes, now.

Ramon, my man! I can't complain here. Things are just cruising along. Glad your Serranos have heat, as well. Perhaps mine was just an early pod fluke. I indeed have been picking them red. Haven't tried a green one, yet. Thanks for stopping in!

The Yellow Habalokia and the yellow 7 are HUGE. That's some impressive stuff! You're going to have some massive plants!

Thanks Carson! The Yellow 7 has set about three pods now out of four flowers. The Yellow Hablokia has set a couple, but it seems to be finicky in doing so. It has probably dropped about 10 flowers for every one that becomes a pod! It will be interesting to see how big they actually get. They do seem to be growing again now that they're in 5 gallon bags. I have a feeling yours will get bigger since you are planting in-ground and your soil looks great. Thanks for stopping in!
