Donnie 2015 Season - mostly crosses

Starting up this glog now that things are starting to ripen.
I am growing mostly my own crosses - due to very bad experiences in the past I am not sharing seeds of my crosses, but other varieties I am willing to share/trade...
My climate here in Denmark is a little colder than Maine-climate, I believe. This summer has been of the coldest ever, but most plants are doing quite okay. :-) These first two plants have been grown in the ground without any cover and are doing great despite cold weather, so really promising.

"Red Chameleon F3"

"Orange Chameleon F3" (Sarit Gat x Black Pearl)

Nice plants ! They are both from the same cross, right ?

Looking forward to many more pictures  ;)

Yes, they are. I will try to get some better examples showing more coloration in the next few days...

Very nice crosses as always Donnie.
Are you still developing the Nagaquin?
Good luck
Datil
Yes, I am - this year the F-5 generation, a few more days and I will be able to show a full-sized mature pod of this years selection which is very similar to the F4-plant.

Some more of my crosses, final results are years away, but I am enjoying the process. ;)  My first cross was Naga Morich (c. chinense) x Pequin de Ischia (annuum) and goal was and is still to develop cultivars with earlier fruit-set and ripening, since it can be challenging to grow chinense in my climate. Also, making more easy-drying cultivars (on the plant) since this cannot be done here without the use of dehydrator with existing ones. I think Chilhuacle Negro and Chilhuacle Amarillo are exiting candidates for improvement.

My Nagaquin F3 crossed with Gizhou Longhorn aka Thunder Mountain Longhorn
Goal is to create a very long easy-to-dry pod with some chinense-aroma.

Jalapeno Conchos x Shishito
A very mild, early-ripening thick-fleshed pepper is the goal, preferably with funny shape from Shishito and flavor from Jalapeno

A cluster variety from last season with chinense-aromas - will ripen to creamy white with some purple

Foliage can get darker to deep black if grown in full sun.

Very large gene pool in this plant developing further on the one above (a little frutescens, some chinense and some annuum)

"Purple Umbrella" F3, ripe

San Juan Tsile - doing well out in the open in a cold summer and a very wet autumn.

Jalapeño Conchos F2 x Shishito

Zia Pueblo - very alike San Juan Tsile, should be better suitable to drying.

A variegated cross - 4 different F2-plants have been selected for further development.

No. 1 - shows best amount of variegation

No. 2 - Not variegated, but leaves were black when there was still any sun and frutis dry out nicely on the plant, may be nice for making new drying varieties.

No. 3 - this one sets fruit in clusters and shows some variegation.

No. 4 - has cluster fruit set, longer fruits and just little purple variegation some places

Aji White Fantasy - low heat, fruity and crunchy.

Wow. What you're doing is pretty amazing.

The variegated cross with purple pods looks like it would be fantastic for landscaping.

How is the flavor and heat on the Jalapeno x Shishito? Is the flavor somewhat muted, or still pretty strong?

The orange and red Chameon's are beautiful pods.

Keep doing what you're doing! You've got it right, it's nice to see people doing non-superhot crosses.

Thanks a lot - I do grow a few superhots, but I don't think high heat is interesting in itself, I am looking for a higher flavor to heat-ratio, so mostly working on combing flavor with good looks, earliness and disease resistance.
The Jalapeno/Shishito cross is quite sweet with a lot of flavor and the smallest amount of heat at the very top of the pod. Ripening time is a great improvement on Jalapeno, but I am hoping for thicker walls and more Jalapeno-flavor in the F2-generation.

Chilhuacle Amarillo - an old Mexican variety described in The great Chile Book, I love the looks, flavor should be interesting, especially when dried. A great flaw is the late ripening, so this is one I have made crosses with and will be working on in years to come.

Nice looking peppers ! they dont seam to be grown often anymore ??
According to my research, you are right - it could be a goner within the nearest future. It makes no sense to grow it in my climate, even though I started earlier than normally, I had to bring it anside for a couple of weeks to get a few ripe pods. But I am hoping to preserve key features (flavor profile and ease of drying, i.e. high dry matter in the flesh) of this one in a new variety I will be developing from some crosses made this year.
