Donnie's 2016 Season

I live in Denmark and grow under these conditions: growing season is roughly from late May/early June to late Sept./early Oct.
Average temps.: June: 59 F July: 61 F Aug: 61 F Sept: 54 F
Av. Days with precipitation: June: 22 july: 23 Aug: 20 Sept: 22

I start mid February, no artificial lighting, begin to bring out plants in my cold greenhouse from around April and plant out permanently from early June. It is too cold to grow chinense varieties outside, but annuums and some baccatums do alright outside in a sunny, sheltered position. I am trying to develop varieties that are able to cope with our cold summers, main focus is to incorporate chinense-typical flavors into hardy, early varieties - my two earliest projects that are almost stabile are "Nagaquin" (Pequin de Ischia x Naga Morich) which is the F6-generation this year and "Orange Goat's Weed" which is at the F7-stage this year.

Interesting crosses! Good luck with them!
Do you tried to grow Pubescens?
Thanks, yes I have grown pubescens for many years, but I don't find them very interesting flavor- or heatwise, I prefer low heat and chinense-flavors plus I like pods that dry easily for storage. I can recommend the Locato PI 387838 with small, yellow fruits for short season areas, I also hear they should set fruits better in hot areas...

I like this one.Very interesting crosses looking forward to see how these develop for you.Good luck.
Thanks, a lot of them will not be interesting in their first year, for example the cluster varieties will not show up until the F2-generation.
Most interesting for me will be ((Pequin de Ischia x Naga Morich) F4 x Thunder Mountain Longhorn) F2. How long will they become and can I find one among the siblings with pronounced chinense-flavors that dries easily..?

Yes of course that last one you mention definitely caught my attention. Those without any doubt will be interesting.

First plant up is one out of only two F2-selections from 250 seedlings of the cross NuMex Sunglo x Purple Flash - goal is to improve on fruit set ability and fruit quality of Purple Flash, I am hoping my selection will have yellow fruits but with genetics in mind, chances are not that good. I named it Gaydar - a term introduced to me via The Office. I googled the term to see if it is offensive, but it seems there is a gay community/dating site that uses the name, so I guess not... However I will come up with another name before releasing it as a new cultivar in oh let's say 2022... ;)  The other selection has its own thread, since it revealed a special type of flower, see thread here: http://thehotpepper.com/topic/60745-new-genetic-trait-with-this-f2-seedling/

A few of the best looking "F2"-selections of (Naga Morich x Pequin de Ischia) F3 x Thunder Mountain Longhorn... Plants are very loose in their growth habit making them less susceptible to fungal diseases, which is of great importance here in Denmark, where we have had rain of some kind almost every day for 5 weeks - first year in my 14 years of growing that I encounter branches rotting, usually not until late September...
Taste testing will begin shortly, the first couple of plants have a pod turning red.

Here's one with wrinkled Naga-like skin, plant is very tall...

Another type with long, slim pods looking a lot like the original Thunder Mountain Longhorn.

A darker green one, quite wrinkled as well...

Not the best one for looks, but maybe flavorwise..?

The shortest pod of all 15 plants, but I like its looks, this one comes nearest to the original Naga Morich...

Time for an update of my Naga Morich cross ((Pequin de Ischia x Naga Morich F4) x Thunder Mountain Longhorn) F2...
I have chosen 5 plants out of the 15 grown, selecting the earliest, most productive and best looking. Now it's time to evaluate flavor, which is most important...
The 5 initial selections:

Sliced up... Notice the differences in amount and color of the placenta tissue. Number 1,2 and 4 have a very nice, floral Naga Morich-like aroma and are all very hot, while no. 3 and 5 have very little aroma and are not as hot, but still hot.

No. 1 and 2 from left will be my selections for growing on next season, here are more shots of plant no. 1...

And plant no. 2...

Interesting chiles you're growing Donnie. I hope you're able to get ripe pods from the Aji Panca... I tried growing them a few years ago but even though the plants were huge and loaded with pods, the frost killed them before any ripened. You might want to pot them up to over-winter inside if you want ripe pods.
Good luck with your grow this season!

Thanks - I doubt I will get a lot of ripe Aji Panca pods even though they set their first fruit early in June - I am planning to bring it inside for a few weeks from early October on to ripen some pods. I like that its pods dry out on the plant and its low pungency and flavor, so I have crossed it with the (Pequin de Ischia x Naga Morich F4) x Thunder Mountain Longhorn) F2. Last year I did this with another late maturing classic, Chilhuacle Amarillo, so it will be interesting next year to see the F2-generation and look for earlier yellow/orange candidates.

An interspecific cluster-type crossed with Aji Charapita:  (Aribibi Gusano x Pimenta Morango F3) x (Sarit Gat) F2 Orange Cluster Selection) x Aji Charapita
I struggled to get self-pollinated pods, so I only have 2 pods of seeds for growing out next year. Plan was to select for cluster-types, but for this I would probably need way more seeds. Some of my earlier cluster types took 250 plants to find 10 amongst them, so I might just grow out all plants and select for a nice ripening pattern like with this one in the colours of the german flag - thinking of calling it "Germania". :-)

Aji Barro di Robiero - very nice color, darker purple than my Aji Omnicolor and more upright growing pods.

Last year Chilhuacle Amarillo was crossed with my ((Pequin de Ischia x Naga Morich F4) x Thunder Mountain Longhorn) F1 - this years 4 plants are all 6-8 weeks earlier to ripen than last year, hopefully I can find an early, orange, low-heat plant next year...

This one has a shape+surface that most alike the Chilhuacle Amarillo...

Really fun crosses.  You can tell that one has Pimenta Morango in it...
Yes, the Pimenta Morango is certainly a favourite of mine! ;-) It really blew my mind when I first grew it around 10 years ago - I had no idea that it would have these wonderful chinense-aromas, because I had never seen a chinense cluster variety, not even a black foliaged one like Pimenta da Neyde. I almost never see it, here on this forum it is mostly all about super hots. Have you stopped growing it and did you make any crosses with it?
