Donnie's 2016 Season

I live in Denmark and grow under these conditions: growing season is roughly from late May/early June to late Sept./early Oct.
Average temps.: June: 59 F July: 61 F Aug: 61 F Sept: 54 F
Av. Days with precipitation: June: 22 july: 23 Aug: 20 Sept: 22

I start mid February, no artificial lighting, begin to bring out plants in my cold greenhouse from around April and plant out permanently from early June. It is too cold to grow chinense varieties outside, but annuums and some baccatums do alright outside in a sunny, sheltered position. I am trying to develop varieties that are able to cope with our cold summers, main focus is to incorporate chinense-typical flavors into hardy, early varieties - my two earliest projects that are almost stabile are "Nagaquin" (Pequin de Ischia x Naga Morich) which is the F6-generation this year and "Orange Goat's Weed" which is at the F7-stage this year.

You seem to like growing the long, twisted shapes... have you ever grown Kerinting or Pusa Jwala chiles?
You're right, and yes I have, but I was not that impressed with flavor or cold tolerance. Thanks for bringing them up, though. The Turkish Aci Sivri and Corbaci were better for me productionwise, but flavor was nothing special. Maybe I should try a korean Gochu next year, will keep an eye on your grow to see which one will be rated best. I am growing a Malaysian variety which should have a special flavor, the Kulai King: http://chilifee.de/epages/6785a7bf-b9bd-45fa-b711-164bd13875ab.sf/de_DE/?ObjectID=6195604

Yes, the Pimenta Morango is certainly a favourite of mine! ;-) It really blew my mind when I first grew it around 10 years ago - I had no idea that it would have these wonderful chinense-aromas, because I had never seen a chinense cluster variety, not even a black foliaged one like Pimenta da Neyde. I almost never see it, here on this forum it is mostly all about super hots. Have you stopped growing it and did you make any crosses with it?

It is very fun and unique.  I don't know why we don't see more of it, maybe you're right about the superhots.

I have saved seed, but I'm not growing it this year.  I may grow it next year... still in the planing phases.  And then there's that little fantasy of not growing anything at all!

A fantasy called nightmare!:-) No, I get it, sometimes it gets too much with all those attention-craving plants. I also consider the amount of plants each year, but my conclusion is always that it is not that much more work to grow 200-300 plants than 5 or 10 while I'm at it. Which is, of course, lying to yourself...:-)

This is my dwarf cluster variety for the window sill Pequaccio F4 (Pequin de Ischia x Abbraccio) - all 4 plants are almost identical at this point of the stabilization process...

An attempt to make a large-fruited baccatum that matures relatively early. Aji Pacae, the largest that I know of, donated pollen to Aji Cristal. This is the F1.

Perhaps my dearest project is a chinense cluster variety which origins are (Aribibi Gusano x Pimenta Morango) This year I am growing the F4-generation and found some very nice looking fruits, the plant itself is not as pretty as it could have been, it was grown in a small pot together with another F4-plant.

Deep furrows, I really like its looks...

Ripe and unripe pods...

lovin these!

My Nagaquin has once again done well outside, which is not typical with chinense-varieties and my control group of around 20 chinense plants has shown the normal bad results with small fruits and mostly stunted, yellow-leaved plants. 5 plants of the F6-generation are virtually identical.
I am happy with this plant, it is well-adapted to my climatic conditions setting a small crop of pods that reach maturity and dry out on the compact plant. Pods are still very aromatic and very hot. :-)

Thanks - I doubt I will get a lot of ripe Aji Panca pods even though they set their first fruit early in June - I am planning to bring it inside for a few weeks from early October on to ripen some pods. I like that its pods dry out on the plant and its low pungency and flavor, so I have crossed it with the (Pequin de Ischia x Naga Morich F4) x Thunder Mountain Longhorn) F2. Last year I did this with another late maturing classic, Chilhuacle Amarillo, so it will be interesting next year to see the F2-generation and look for earlier yellow/orange candidates.
What a nice surprise! The Aji Panca in my greenhouse has pods ripening, I plan to let the pods dry out on the plant...

Nice pods!
Your Aji Panca is Chinense or Baccatum?
They are considered chinense. They are atypical, though, so I am wondering if way back they could have been mixing genes with other species, the resemblance to baccatum is striking to me. Both pod shape and their ability to dry out on the plant is very alike. I have done some different crosses with it this year, the results might give a hint...

Same here.
My plant had Chinense flowers and Baccatum shape.
I think is a old hybrid.
