media Don't use these pellets!

This year, as I was looking for Jiffy pellets to start my peppers in, I came across the Planters Pride pellets at Menards and thought I would give them a try. Here is my experience compared to Jiffy pellets.

1. For some reason, low germination.
2. Seedlings show little to no growth, or very slow growning.
3. The white fiber netting is very difficult to remove, difficult to tear.

My advice. AVOID THESE PELLETS
Here is a link of one place that sells them.

Anyone else use these pellets? I am worried because I just seeded all of my tomatoes in them this week. And had to start some more Fatalii's in Jiffy Pellets.

I have never tried and pellets before. I only use ProMix and have had great success with it. Thanks for the advice.

Sadly not all of us can get Pro-Mix.

* is sad*

I can't see how the pellets would really affect germination unless maybe their ph is way off, but that shouldn't happen with coir.

Shipping costs are the deal breaker every time I look. I'm hoping to maybe coax the guy at the new hydro store to order some, but right now he's sticking with the Fox Farm stuff.

I second this! I tried the exact same pellets from Menards last year and had 0% germination!!! wtf! Definitely pick yourself up some! Highly recommended!

In regards to pro-mix, don't be discouraged by what their retail locator says. It said there wasn't any sold within 60 miles of me and I found two places under 20. So keep looking it may be hiding in your area.

ARG! Don't do that to me! Now I'll be scouting out nurseries and hydro shops everywhere I go.

Haha. Well, I don't want to set you up for disappointment, but you may just get lucky. I had given up hope and then found some at one place while picking up some Fox Farm Fertilizer. The price was a bit too high, but I figured if they have it and are not listed maybe other places have it as well. I actually got lucky. While lurking on another forum I saw someone say they got it from Agway. They lived in another state and I never saw an Agway so I looked it up online. I put my zip into their store locator and found one nearby. They had bales for $29.99 so I picked one up. So far I am very happy with it.

the question a must ask about point 3. why the hell are you trying to get the netting off? the roots grow through this and you just bang the whole lot into compost when you pot on, DO NOT TRY TO TAKE THE NETTING OFF THERE IS NO NEED TO DO THIS.

I always remove or at least tear the netting. The netting on the brands available around here, Jiffy and Ferry Morse, doesn't decompose well at all. I find the plants do better if I at least partially remove it.

Makes sense to me! Although I wouldn't know cuz I've never had a successful germination with a pellet :(
