Essegi 2014: 1st grow! Winter is coming.

Ok, today i decided to plant seeds.
First of all i want to thank who helped me in a thread and Sarge in particular that helped me to decide what to do! :D And Lonewolf from pepperfriends forum that has helped me a lot!

My list, all from Semillas, begin of september 2013:

ir2YmjGmgP7ma.jpg

  • Trinidad Scorpion Moruga Red
  • HP22B
  • Trinidad Douglah
  • Chocolate Bhut Jolokia
  • Fatalii
  • Fatalii White
  • Ferenc Tender
I've planted all but Ferenc Tender seeds, i'll plant them next month or in beginning of March. If i'll plant them.
11 per type.
I've treated seeds for 15 mins in a 3% bleach solution then i washed them very well in water before planting.
During that process i lost 1 seed of Trinidad Douglah and 3 of Chocoloate Bhut Jolokia (i suppose 2 of that lost seeds were too tiny anyway).

I've used plastic glasses with an hole:

The soil, specific for seeds (here before planting):
iPgVihUluA5J0.jpg

  • PH 6-7
  • C/N 25
  • 0,6 dS/m
  • organic ferthilizer
  • neutral peat 65% volume
  • organic carbon on dry content 35%
  • organic nitrogen on dry content 11%
  • fulvic and humc carbon on dry content 11%
hope the last 4 are translated accurately...

So 62 plants in total. In a 60*100 cm table
  • I plan to grow them all by myself until i have to change the vase.
  • Then i keep 2 per type (12 in total) of them in a 2,4 L vase each (top external diameter 18 cm). It's ok for my table. The rest goes to friends and relatives.
  • Then 1 per type in a 15-20 L vase each and 1 per type in ground. Or all in vases, but probably half on ground. Of course the last vases will go outside, i have a nice spot of 15 m lenght along my house walls that is without wind and quite hot.
Room, that is heating room:

That round thing in the left is warm... I've turned on radiator on right.

Here measured temps in center table:

iMr6TuzQdT2ux.jpg

Considering some parallax error is 27°C or little more (hoping that thing is accurate) which is 81°F
In the night will be lower but i think still above 20°C (68°F)
There's some natural light, hope that helps.
I have to do some funny things for the light, unfortunately at home have prohibited to use drying racks that would have been perfect.

I've a 60*3 watts LED light, nearly 10K lumens. I've found a good price and more than half was a birthday present from friends...

It's the round thing.
Well, no cats or dog allowed in growing room! Hope all goes well..

Excellent glog man! I'm late to the party, but man that sauce sounds like the real deal. I could go for a taste of that around low.

Your grow is looking solid. I'm enjoying those macro shots. I think you got some of the best photo chops on THP. Keep the pics coming bud!

Darn man! I wish I had made that swapping mistake too. Unfortunately, no dice. My fatalii is fatalii and my reaper is ... well ... habanero something.
I really envy your hook, looking top notch, A+, speechless!

Oh, on another note, I really dig your uncle's tomatoes. Nicely done!
Thnaks!
Today i wanted to check again that... But now it's still raining so i suppose i'll check tomorrow.
Last time i checked one bhut had pods with a nice form, nearly big as one index finger (both in lenght and width) and wrinkled, other one seemed more fat. I really hope that afternoon stops raining or tomorrow at least. Plants had not much pods, but i expect them to increase the load now.

Thanks much appreciated!
Last sauce is nice, maybe a bit too lemon flavoured (but i like lemons). Apricot one was good. I should try again with less apricot.
Next one i want to try something different and simpler: just pan fry onion, then add garlic cloves and fry, black pepper and salt. Blend with pepppers then cook more.
There's so much to experiment...

Lol i was able to go to my aunt and now it rains again. Not even she remembers such a rainy summer (and she's around 80...).
I've founf other 2 green pods on ground (a doughlah that seems sensitive at that, it's the fourth and another one).

First statement: i seriously messed up something.
Probably when i soaked seeds i did something wrong.
Lesson learned, put more care into that.

Now i explain after right stuff:

ibqPphxJy3SBCq.jpg

A moruga, tallest one. The plants are doing great. Green, bigger leavers, they're growing, pods are setting... Just if it does't continue to rain.

Choco bhuts:
ibasTBcuAvxPhD.jpg

Beautiful pods and big. One is probably over 4 inch long...

Now the wrong stuff:

That should be a choco bhut:
iburEffAaz6i8O.jpg

And that the bottom:
iO3OMKiBts17U.jpg

Doens't seem any of other plant i have... Could be a flawed reaper? Pods are also decently big.

That is a supposed reaper:
ibhONh5T3c77om.jpg

This is choco bhut, right? Probably i've messed up more than i thought when planting seeds...
At least douglahs and morugas are fine, so a fatalii and a bhut.
Inside:
i6IR4fO3OQHSf.jpg

I tasted a tiny piece and that was hot! At first none at all, then grew... Maybne i've something wrong today, i believe i've felt it more than a douglah piece. Very good sweet taste btw.

I tasted also fatalii white. Too bad it was not enough ripe, but great taste. I tasted also a fatalli from a friend... Both have a similar taste (must confront when fully ripe), maybe white one could be even better (i've not felt the hint of bitter and soap i tasted on fatalli).
Also, white fatalii has been very sneaky, at beginning seemed less hot than a jalapeno, then heat came...
Btw fatalii could be best tasting pod i've ever had, and hotter than habaneros.
Awesome pods!

Overwintered 7pod is the only plant that is on the yellow side, could be pot fault, but has some nice pods:
iqfBa6FfwZlPa.jpg

Well, along some onions (don't know if bought or grown by some relatives), homegrown garlic, some annum from Calabria and Thailandia that is my crop of today:

iTCHRAFhvmw6U.jpg

More or less 70g pepper, 60g garlic, 70g onions. I use to made some sauce.
Pan fried slowly onions, after some mins slted and black peppered, putted cloves. Cooked more, added peppers, some lemon drops and blended. Simmered some more, put some evo on tha jar at the end:
ibm4ynL0TaTRX3.jpg

Tonight i'll try with friends...

Today's crop:

iGR2pnIMnqLWz.jpg

Some cherry peppers.... They will be transformed into that:
izZsaeADDzU3b.jpg

Cured with evo, vinegar, anchovies and capers (here olives too, but i prefer without).

I cut that aged cherries, added anchovies and evo:
iWlDb7sKHQNsK.jpg

iP0o68Jx1gpH7.jpg

Used for spaghetti. For me i added some of my last sauce that is very hot.

Then i ate some eggplant slices from a previous crop:
ibkf5IWrpvG1tL.jpg

Just oven cooked then topped with evo, garlic, oregano and parsley.

Some random shots:

Other bell peppers:
iTlszGj75DPB6.jpg

good for 1 or 2 jars.

iblXo7Fn8fqU85.jpg

Some 7 pods. Those are the first ones that i picked fully ripe. :P Now plant has nearly no one left (out of more than 30).

A couple of fatalli white:
iGMJBTPexZCp1.jpg

That should be reapers i suppose:
iwBG69yKEo00F.jpg
Others have a "more correct" shape. Quite small pods.

That is the wrong plant:
ibmtZBF2OJpvIm.jpg

Some pods seems more wrinkled than those ones, i'll check that.

Piri piri are taking a lot time to ripe and choco bhuts too, that are maybe the best looking pods i have.
Some other pods:
iTrk4P2O8Zsum.jpg

Moruga, a big douglah, more or less double size of others i had, and the misterious pod. I tasted this last one and i didn't like it a lot... Remotely like a 7pod but more bitter and less heat.

Moruga:
ibacIsfqOtQqYB.jpg

Definetly hot. I used only a quarter in following sandwich, i believe i like it more than a 7pod, less bitter.
I had also a Carolina Reaper. Maybe hotter than moruga, maybe not... Smaller for sure. Maybe even less bitter. but maybe i like more moruga taste. Must check bette, but i have the impression that are the 2 hottest pod i've had until now. :D

So the sandwich test.
Homegrown bell peppers, onions from my uncle, minced beef, a quarter of moruga (didn't want something too hot tonight), mozz, a balsamic vinegar ketchup:

isKXalzU6hfJe.jpg

ibwxY7YsfEf4Zs.jpg

It was better than i thought, i really enjoyed it.
It was an improvised stuff but better than other sandwiches!

And a new dweller, i've found her in front of my home 3 weeks ago and i still haven't found who can keep her (photo are form 2 weeks ago):

Thanks Devv! I've the impression i did something wrong whiile soaking seeds with bleach soultion. The issue is that they attack way too easily to the strainer. During that process i lost some seeds, not much, but that make me think something could have stayed in the strainer while i was straining next type of seeds...
For the rest i wrote the name in all glasses before straining, i strained a type of seeds, plant it, strain next type and so on... Rather linear. So i believe the fault has been in above process. I suspect faulty seeds only for that mysterious pods (there's the possibility that could be a lost seed from last year while i was gathering seeds from various pods, never used then, maybe an hybrid between a scorp and a choco haba, but i hardly believe that). It's not either a white fatalii, reaper, red moruga, choco bhut or douglah.

Next year maybe i'm growing just a plant per type (probably just 5-6 types as i want to keep al in back of home). So i must give a "copy" as backup to a couple of friends for each plant! :D

Essegi............nice photography...........both you and P-Son are on fire with the trigger !

That's cool to see you're getting some colorful harvests, I like the look of the 7/ pots, they appear to be the or/st with are not seen as often.

Great food shots.......but what's up with the sandwich buns........they don't match........

One can't have enough cats........or can they......cute kitten !

Thanks!
I suppose i have used half bun for a sanwich and half in other. :D
"they appear to be the or/st with are not seen as often" i don't understand that. :P

Now i'm at 3 foundling cats (4 if we count Margot), 2 given away. :P

Oops......."or/st".....means the original strain. ...which is a good thing. Those pods are  more crevice shaped and slightly bumpy.

Most growers display variations of the original....most that have been crossed with a different strain.

Oh thanks!
I purchased that plant from a vendor (wich i already had a scorp from them and some pods didn't seems so "compliant", other was), they called it just "7pod". I asked if it was a Jonah since i've often heard that the "standard" 7pod is a Jonah (and i've not clear that thing even now) and they said no, Jonah is another thing.
Next time when i'll have some available i'll shot the interior.

Grazie anche a te Datil! :D

First decent harvest:

From 11 o' clock, clockwise: piri piri, fatalii white, choco bhut (from 2 different plants), moruga, reaper, douglah, wrong pods.
For size: biggest moruga is 12g.
Pods are getting bigger, especially douglhas. Can't wait for other choco bhuts that are the biggest of the loot.
Wrong plant is quite an heavy producer... Moruga too but is slow and has set various pods. Until now their pods are the most consistent in shape.
Probably temps below average aren't helping (so wet btw...).

I've eaten also some fully ripe douglah... I felt it quite bitter, taste is not bad but not my fav. I stil feel it less hot in mouth than a reaper or a moruga and not more than a standard 7pod (maybe i feel it more on stomach but i don't eat enough to have problems:D).
I tasted fatalii white on a pasta dish. Good pod! Quite slow burner.
Piri piri too... But i didn't feel any heat since i ate nearly along fatalii (i felt some sweet taste and that is good)... So i must retry.

Reaper:
imL8NtXDXepbO.jpg

This is the only one that has a correct shape. Small pods.

Wrong pods:
iO39OYxDh2Wz9.jpg

One is smooth and the other is course, same plant. One has a small tail, the other hasn't.

I didn't use scissors to remove pods and i must say that reaper and wrong pod are the ones with the strongest attachment to the plant.

EDIT: just eaten a piri piri because it was "the right thing" to do. Now i feel the heat and it's quite strong for an annuum!
There's no bitter and that is good. I feel some citrus flavour. Interesting.
