you don't name a cocktail "old fashioned" because what you are doing is new. 😉
 
Oh absolutely. Old fashioned was originally just a way of mixing your booze with sugar and bitters. To my knowledge this "old fashioned" way of mixing was used for not only whiskey but gin, cognac or brandy as well. I guess one could say it wasn't a whiskey exclusive drink till the 1880s.
