Finally got a newer computer again!

Well I'm still on my friend's old P4, 1.7GHZ, 1GB RAM system till I have the $ to buy a brand spanking new system. Only problem I have now is that this thing freezes up from time to time. Think the 6 year old processor is going on it.

I do half my browsing on a P3 900, 256MB RAM and 13 inch screen. I love it because its a panasonic CF-18 toughbook with touchscreen, makes it infinitely more useable, plus I can carry it with me anywhere and not get too worried about moisture (its drop-resistant, water-resistant, vibration-resistant, US military spec). Its still fine to use because it has essentially a fresh install on it with very few programs loaded, no extra drivers, and only windows updates added on. In a way, being so low powered is its saving grace-it is so puny I dont ask it to do anything much, so what little it does it does very well.

As for freezing occasionally, download and run this beauty, it will stress your processor and ram out to the max, if they are dodgy it will find out shortly. If they are fine, I would look to windows getting old and corrupting. Backup your stuff and re-install, will be all fast again.

Nice deal Quad, glad you got a faster box.

I've never bought a comp since I built my first IBM XT compatible box with a whooping 256K of memory. Been rolling my own ever since.

Start with a good case and go from there. If you're on a tight budget you don't need to buy it all at once.

I used the same case for over 15 years (Supermicro 750) until just recently.

Oh yeah, I have a bunch of parts, but they're all P3/K6 generation stuff...

Too bad, I hava ginormous Enlite full tower case that I loved with my K62-450 for yrs. But, it doesn't have all the connectors and front panel stuff modern mobos want.

Ha, if I bought like 1-2 parts a month, it'd take like a year to build a modern computer.

They still make gateways? I haven't seen a cow box in years? Except for when I order beef ribs for the smoker!

Ha, my router/fw box is a Gateway E-3110 PII-366 96MB ram machine that has the original gold gateway 2000 logo...

Still runs like a champ.

It's Slot1 so no cpu fan, just a ginourmous heatsink. It'll probally run forever on *nix. I went from 56k to 1.5M to 7M internet on it, and it's never given me a problem at all.

It was free...and sure beats a $50 router consumer router. The USR SureConnect ADSL modem was $8 on ebay and is another old but capable bit of history, D-Link 5-port switch was $4 at a thrift store...yeah, I'm cheep.

But, I have the most solid connection of anyone I know. :)

What kind of front connections you need?

Maybe this would do?
