First timer pepper grow! Planted Feb. 17th, 2013- Pods Multiplying!

I just started my first jalapeno plant. put in the seeds yesterday. using general purpose vegetable miracle grow and seed starting store-bought potting soil in a 4" wide plastic pot with bottom-feed tray. any advice? remember i am new at all this, just starting to look into hydroponics, and plan on starting a hydro system. any fertilizer/ph/watering schedule/ temp/ nutrient/food advice would be greatly appreciated. im very excited to see how my first yeild turns out. i am thinking i might start my next few seeds on a wet tissue to let the seeds burst, and then plant the successful sprouters, and i will be keeping the seeds/plants growing in the same room as my reptiles, which is kept at approx 70-85*F ambient temperature, then moving them into the window sill or outdoors (not sure yet) onto my front balcony. again, any advice would be greatly appreciated.p

Havent posted in a while!!!  Here's the latest!!!
Pruned the larger leaves off the main stem on the two super chillis and the JAL (pruning not shown in pic) to encourage more growth! Still picking buds off almost every 3 days!
All the plants are doing well, but the superchilli and Jal are so far taking the prize!  Getting set up on hydroponics within a month!

Getting ready to purchase the parts for my hydro set up in a few more days!!!  Unfortunately I lost one of the superchilli's to unknown disease.  One day it looked fine, next everything was hanging, and the stalk was browning from the top down!  I immediately got it away from the rest as soon as I saw it, but not sure what happened.  Several of the plants that are close to the light are cupping and curling, so Im thinking imma move the light a few inches farther from them, and rotate the plants again!  Does anyone think it would be a bad idea to do a diluted H2O2 treatment to try to make sure nothing spread to the other plants?

On another note, here are the latest pics from a few days ago!

Speaking of which, the one that dropped dead is the one in the back left that is packed with dark leaves on top.  any thoughts on the condition of the plants?  As always, advice is greatly appreciated!

Damn...that sucks. My guesses would be damping off or root rot. Damping isn't too common on plants that size, but it does happen. Check the base of the stem just below the soil level for a portion that looks thin/withered...The rest look great!

HELP!!!  Don't have a clue whats going on but that's 2 plants down!  They literally die almost overnight!!!  so you know the camera has a spot on it, that is not grey or purple spots on the leaves.  Here are the pics.  One more thing, the cups are decently thick with roots, I ripped this one out to get it away from the rest of my plants, but here's also a pic of what was still attached.   I have heard that if the plants are grown indoors they can grow hollow and possibly fall over with too much force...I only have the ceiling fan on medium to rustle the leaves a little, and the rest seem to take it fine, not to mention I have been doing this periodically since they started as sprouts.  I use a walmart plant food stakes, as I do not yet have the funds to get some real nutes yet but i only put half a stick in each one to prevent over fert, and they are mostly nitrogen sticks if I read the ingredients right.  still in seed starting mix.  They do get a few strands of dog hair on them but i dont think that is harmful...  Any ideas???  My friend said something similar happened to him, and his whole crop went from fine to dead in a few days but he still doesnt know what happened...all of the remaining green leaves started just falling off and then on the last leaves the top collapsed then all the leaves fell off

Most of my plants became root bound, and died before I could figure it out :(  Fortunately I still have 3 troopers still fighting, but 1 of them might not survive the transplant shock... Upsized their containers to half gallon jugs, and will up to 1 gallon soon then 5 later.  Heres the remaining fighters as of two days ago!  Wish me luck!

This one (above) is struggling with transplant shock... Hope he does ok.

This 7 pot is fighting like a champ!  White super hairy roots have already reached the container, and are still going strong!  Wont be long before I size this one up again!  not to mention the growth spurt its about to go through!

Jal still fighting strong!  Finally recovering from my (stupid) pruning idea...  Fortunately he seems rather resiliant!

Those roots on the plant that died look rotted, did the cups have proper drain holes in the bottom?

Try not to get the leaves wet when you water since you can risk fungal disease indoors keeping the plants damp. Also might want to stake that jalapeno plant and quit picking leaves off the poor thing lol.

Oh trust me im not picking leaves again... went of some less than satisfactory advice I recieved, and I have seen its failure lol.  The cups did have drainage holes, however, they were sitting on a flat surface and restricted the drainage, not to mention I have a feeling the soil I am using does not have very good drainage... Im thinking im going to mix in perlite when I go to upsize again to improve drainage.  Advice?

I have a ton of extra perlite I can bring you. I bought a 3 CF bag of chunky perlite & I haven't needed much. Or if you get that promix you shouldn't need any extra perlite.

Also cut the holes in the cups so they come up the sides a bit too so they don't get blocked by sitting on something. With cups you should do it like I had those clones with a 2nd cup to catch the runoff & something in between to keep them separated.

I agree with the root rot assessment...sucks man. Trimming some lower growth works well in full sun to promote branching out, but I don't do it with my annuums. Indoors I don't trim any leaves they need all those leaves surface area to use as much light as they can...

Best thing to do with most of them plants would be to get them hardened off and into some dirt at the community garden!!! If you ain't got room...just plant them in TXCG's plot!

Thats up to him! lol I started working on hardening the survivors day before yesterday, im thinking im gonna start trying to tuffn' em up this week and see how they do!  Cant wait to see them damn pods!!! (fingers crossed)

Planted up to 1 gallon pots a couple days ago, and you can DEFINITELY tell they were root bound!  1 7 pot and 1 Jal are unfortunately the only survivors currently (didnt figure it out fast enough to save the rest), and the 7 pot is struggling with transplant shock but seems to be putting up a real fight!  Gahhhhhh can't wait until next grow season when I will know MUCH better what I am doing!  You all have been an amazing help thus far!  hopefully tis not too late to pull a yield this year, long grow season should hopefully help.  Jal is holding strong, and finally starting to recover from those leaves I stupidly pulled  !  Learned the difference between good and bad root structure (visually) the other day when I saw the massive difference between white hair roots and brown smooth unhealthy roots while potting up   Cant wait to see them start setting stronger healthy roots, so I can put them out in the texas sun!  its been 90's and 100+ rather frequently, so im expecting some longer hardening off times, but I think they will do just fine! DEFINITELY gonna get more CFL's, a better setup, and soil with better drainage next season!  TXCG i will almost definitely take you up on the perlite, if you can still spare some!  I made the dumb mistake of getting garden soil for the bigger pots, and im thinking im gonna mix in the perlite and maybe a few other drainage improvements to help get that oxygen back into the roots!  Sorry theres only 2 plants left but heres some pics from earlier this week!
TuG9ZEY.jpg

Jal finally starting to show signs of recovery!  stunted growth and the initial overwatering will probably severely limit the yield this year, but worth a shot!

7 pot showing signs of transplant shock, not to mention the stress from being root bound!  Leaves are now hanging a little more limp than in this picture, but none have fallen off, and i have a feeling she will pull through just fine!
COMING SOON: TEXAS SUN :fireball:, hardening off :onfire: , and hopefully soon some decent yields! :woohoo:

7 pot is pulling through decently well!!!  Keep this up and I will be seeing some nice pods soon!  probably give it another week or so to let the roots take a good hold and get healthy, and then i'll resume trying to harden them off!  Also, Jalapeno showing some really good new growth!!! Pics below

Still very leggy, were hopefully gonna fix that with some more cfl's and the mirrors to get that light into those suckers!

Leaves finally starting to pick back up after transplant!  next, to add perlite to get that soil drainage/air to the roots and get this thing healthy again!

More pics!  The Jal and 7 pot are doing very well, even after the cat pulled the Jal completely out of the dirt!  Starting to get several flower buds on the Jal, and the 7 pot looks like she might be starting to form buds as well!  Started some seasonal cherry tomato seeds a few days back, waiting for them to pop, (pictures later)

Look at those buds forming!

Last but certainly not least, 7 pot pulling in strong!

Finally got the Hydroponic setup started!  got the system up and running, now to build a more stable and visually appealing setup with something for the buckets to stand on, and some tightening on the drain pipes!  7 pot seems to have split and is doing some MAJOR leaf-age, and the Jal is popping buds all over the place!  See Pics below, more soon!

Plants are looking real happy now GG! Very lush...loving your diy hydro system too, keep us posted on how that works out!
Oh trust me I will, I think I have kinda started to figure the whole process out, Just started some cherry tomatoes   already got a sprout (next day!) and its pushing up first true leaves (day 3!!!)>  Everything I have done to the plants recently has drastically improved their health!  The new Metal Halide is doing wonders for their vegetation, and I have a HPS waiting for when im ready to push them into full flower (probably soon, once they get some decent size!)

I swear everyone on here has been a blessing in learning the techniques in raising plants!  Took a while to get used to not overwatering, and potting up, but seems apart from that and monitoring soil drainage, its rather easy to grow peppers!  Im probably gonna start posting pics every 2 or 3 days now to keep an eye on relative growth rate compared to before, but I can already tell Im moving in the right direction

Watch out pod porn lovers, or general vegetable lovers, my plants are about to go CRAZY!!!

This mornings update!  Got a flower bloomed and (i think) pollinated, as it seems to be pulling back now on the Jal!  7 pot is definitely putting out buds, and tons of new growth!  Tomato is spreading its first true leaves ALREADY, and I got another 2 more still popping up coty's!  I think I could get used to this hydro stuff!  (btw the peppers are still soil)  Pics below!
Jal's Flower (Sorry blurry, apparently my grow light puts out either some decent EM radiation, or light is too bright /:)
