Fish Pepper

No, they're not like jalapenos. Pod shape and size, flesh thickness, and flavor are all different. Maybe I should add "when ripe" for taste. If you're going to eat them unripe, you might as well get the icky green ones from the grocery store and not bother growing your own.

Agreed. Not Jalapenos. They are a "meh" pepper in my book. You are supposed to use them when cooking fish but I never got around to that. Really pritty plants though.

We use them to jack-up our homemade old bay seasoning. They are pretty nice with clams casino also.

Yep. In fact, the Fish pepper is supposedly THE "Red Pepper" IN Old Bay. Just not enough of it, of course.;)

I'm growing them this year. They have a weird growth habit for me, alternating leaves instead of two leaves across from one another. Tall too, seems to be somewhat vine-like. Still a seedling though so really too young to tell i guess.

The leaves are supposed to be variegated and the fruit striped as well(at least when green), which is partly what interests me.

Why are they best with fish? Do they have a fishy taste that is not noticeable because they're with fish?

Wow. I couldn't disagree more. I think they're beautiful plants. THP, I think the flavor complements fish and crab because it doesn't overwhelm their more delicate flavor, it compliments it. They're not the little flavor bombs that some of the habs or baccatuums are, but since I try and eat more fish as is recommended, I find them an easy way to dress up the flavor without adding unhealthy stuff.

Wow - this reminds me, I need to sow a few seeds. I loved the pepper last year. Very productive but also nice looking plant.

I grew the fish chiles last season.
IMO they were prolific, the stems kinda grew out like a thai or lemon drop would & kinda tall & bushy (taking my location into consideration)
as for taste I cant really comment on it cuz I havent ate enough of it yet to make a real call, still have alot of the red powder left, I tend to use other chiles before I use the fish chile. sorry.

as for ornamental, yes the striped color on the pods is kinda cool, as for the leave color, its ok.

if you're looking for a ornamental plant, look elsewhere instead of the fish chile. yes they're neat looking but thats it! neat!
