Frustrating Pepper Growing Season

I did get a late start this year. I planted my first seeds on May 1st. Only one plant, a habanero, produced any flowers. and those flowers all fell off. The hab was bought at a store on 4/25. All of my others were started from seeds. Bhuts, datils, jamaician red hots, fatalli, alma paprika, choc hab, chimayo, and a few others are all less than 8" tall. Don't think I will be getting any peppers from any of these plants. Sure does feel like i wasted alot of time and money to get no results. Maybe I will file a claim with BP to re-coup some of my expense.

Overwinter your favorite.
Get an early start on next year.
There's a thread around showing a habanero that was overwintered with a zillion pods. That should be sufficient motivation :-)

I had a couple of ultra-late starts (Last week actually), which I plan to overwinter in hopes of getting a few early pods next year and a maybe a bit of a bumper crop if I get really lucky. Look ahead. Daydreaming in pepperland is a lot of fun.

Don't worry man. I started my seeds around the same time 2 years ago and had tons of pods by september and I live in Canada. You have plenty of time to see pods this year down where you are. Don;t sweat it I guarentee you lots of pods this year. :) Check this out for proof. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAp_wOjXP5A&feature=related

I just had a seedling start for a Trinidad Scorp. I am going to over winter it though. All my plants were no bigger than 5 inches in May. Like the rest said just keep on truckin and you'll be rewarded.

i must have seen almost every other pepper vid on youtube coz i swear i've seen the videos posted here by most if not all the members of thp! cool! so that was yours huh? nice.

Way cool.
Definitely happy to see that it's quite likely I'll be getting a few pods :-)

I definitely recommend an early start next year, I start my chinenses in January/February which would give you an extra 3-4 months.
Overwintering is also an option but not usually as easy as it looks :(

Next year I do plan on starting around the beg of Jan. I will try to over-winter one or two of the best looking plants. Hopefully one will be the Bhut. That plant is still only about 3" tall and it was planted on 5/1. Unless they start to grow like crazy, I doubt any of the plants I grew from seeds will produce any fruit. I'm basing this assumption on how slow they are growing.

Well at least your in Louisiana and it probably stays warm there until October-ish. So another 3.5 months give or take. Another 90 days or so. Which if you planted your Bhut on May first, you should be able to get some pods off of it. Once my Bhut seemed like it wasn't going to do shit, then just took off. One day It was 8 inches and I swear a month later it was 17 inches and producing buds. So here's to a few super hots. Another way to look at is at least you learned a lot about growing to bring into next year. And in the off season you can stock up on seeds and supplies, take notes on things to remember etc, etc. If I had started in Feb., I would've had a harvest of some peppers by now.....but alas I waited til May.

Can't you grow until November or December outside before you get frost? Trust me you will get more peppers than you can eat in a year this season.

The weather here in Louisiana will be warm through mid Oct, then the weather will turn. I did learn alot about pepper growing so that should help next year. I just put my bhuts outside and they appear to be growing but at a slow pace. I think i will have to put all of them outside and get them out of the house. if they make it fine, if not, then will concentrate on next year.

I have some 7 Pot Brain Strain seeds on the way, I intend on planting a couple right away to overwinter for a good start on next year. I will also start some late January as well, just to see if it makes a big difference for me, and in case the overwintered plant(s) don't make it.

I have had a miserable year this year as well. Hoping the rain that is supposed to come next week will help, it hasnt rained in 3 weeks here and temps have continually been in the high 90's.

Here's a few pictures of my small plants.

Here in upstate SC, the plants will usually survive outside until Thanksgiving. I even brought in a few plants to finish ripening pods and harvested the last of them on New Years. Still plenty of time to get pods. Not sure where you are in Louisiana, but I would assume your season would be longer than mine is here.

If you planted those on May 1st, they should be a lot bigger than that. Maybe try to get some Superthrive to see if you can wake them up. I had a C. Galapagoense seedling that looked like that after nearly 4 months from seeding, gave it a small drink of superthrive and it is growing great. Only took 1 application. I don't care to use it as a regular additive, but it is great for giving a jump start. You can get it at hydro stores. My bottle cost $10 I think for 4 oz. Only use at most a 1/4 tsp a gallon, so it lasts a long time.

Good luck!
