Missed your post. My dad was big into ham radio. My mother is certified and kept a few around for emergencies.

Edit: That is NOTHING compared to what my dad had. He had a whole freakin' radio station in the basement. Almost all the towers in the area are his. When he died, all his equipment, besides what my mother and I use at home and in the cars were donated to the club.
 
 
     Yeah, it certainly is a hobby that tends to get out of control over the years. Leading to shacks that look like some kind of a NASA control center. So you and your mom are codeless technicians, I take it? That's my ticket. I used to be way more into digital modes like Packet. My thing was DX digipeating back in HS. Now I use a 2m HT mainly for storm spotting purposes. Getting back into it, at least... I never really did get the itch for HF.
 
I thought you guys in the US and rest of the Northern half would find this amusing.
Moved all the potted plants into full shade for the next week!
