Garden Log Software

My wife's brother in-law and I are in the market for some gardening software. For the most part we want something that we can use to log data such as...

-Track seed types
-Where stuff is planted (create a graphic of your garden and where plants are)
-When compost/ferts get added (user input)
-Costs (user input)
-Ability to upload pics into journal
-Supports all/most popular veges and of course peppers
-Can log plant sizes/production
-Calendar for when to Sow/Plant/Frost dates/etc.

So I think this would qualify as a program that is really an advanced journal of sorts that allows pics to be uploaded and has a built in calendar and graphic representation of the garden(s).

Anyone know of any software that would fit this bill? I have done some looking but I have not yet found anything that has blown me away and has impressed me really.

There a free software called herb iq that close to what ya looking for.

I noticed quickly this looks like its got the "herb" type crop in mind...lol but it does look like it can be used for anything. do you know if that is correct?

Just so happens I have owned my new HTC Thunderbolt for about 2 months now so I will surely be checking that out too. A side note, I have been playing with the Herb IQ app and I think it just might do the trick. We dont grow the stinky sticky herb but there is a lot of features and stuff we can still use. However I am still interested in other programs people may have used or know of.

crazy8, I've been looking for the same thing, preferably that runs on Linux. I'll let you know if I come across anything.

I'm making a web-based log for my own use. I could port it out for free for anyone who wants to use it.

I primarily want to use it for keeping track of my hydro PH, ppm and other info for my indoor grow.

Someone tell me the fields needed for making this work, and I will put a free tool online for everyone to use.

SInce its webbased are you doing it with PHP? Just curious, I used to do some web site stuff and have a little experience in PHP. Well if there was a built in tool to layout your garden and the plants in it would be cool. As far as the other stuff goes it would be cool to have something to log height and width of plant, notes, number of pods produced from plant, be able to upload pics of plant, a way of keeping track of soil ph along with stuff that would get put into the soil, something to ID each plant, being able to track money put into the garden for stuff like ferts/materials/etc., being able to keep records from one season to the next and maybe even compare results. So it really is a log and a journal of the garden as a whole and for each plant...I could go on.

I would suggest looking at that HERB IQ program. It has a lot of very useful features in it. You could probably get a lot of great ideas from it. But keep in mind that only about half of that program would be used for the average gardener. Then just adopt some of those ideas and features into your web based app. If done and designed right it could come out pretty sweet. Hope I was of some help.

Yes its PHP, I have never touched .net stuff.... ... I'm a bit of a novice PHP programmer... I'm guessing now that it would be a good resource and used primarily by the herb growing community... O well.. if they want to log there grows outside there physical computer and keep track.. I would be honored to help there cause.

I myself just want to keep track of most of the costs associated with growing peppers, so I can streamline it and keep costs low, and run a set of baselines for growing.

I see all sorts of GREAT HELP, and message from people on nutrient usage, but if I could see hundreds of pictures of other grows and nutrient levels and stuff to compare that's what
I'm really shooting for.

I will download it tonight and look.

Once I get it working I will attempt to get a more seasoned programmer to make me a android/iphone app for it.

Right now I'm working on a name for it, something memorable for a domain...... message me if you have any ideas... LOL

wanna help programming?

I have been interested in messing with some of the Andorid programming just to see what I can do but I dont know if I will ever sit down and do it. I honestly would help in a heart beat but I have a lot on my plate as it is and time is slim. Not to mention im probably not as seasoned as you may want. As much as I dont like to decline an offer to help It would be better than saying yes and not able to step up to the plate. :) I would be very interested in checking it out once you get further a long in the project.

Names.....Hmmmm
"Hot Log" lol (since its a hot pepper log of sorts)
"Pepper IQ" (adopted from Herb IQ)
"Garden Tracker"
"Garden Logger"
or maybe something more like....
"Green Leaf"
"Sprout It"
"Grow 'N' Log"
"My Plot"

These are not the best I have done....it is kind of hard coming up with a name for something like this...lol Another cool feature would be a seed tracker. Sure you could open your seed storage box and look but for some of us Im sure it would be nice to have a quick easy list to look at. Also maybe some features for cross breeding much like the Herb ID app. Something like a place to enter Father Plant and Mother Plant then a name for the cross.

I have been fighting with ideas all day for a domain name.... LOL... I want it to be peppers only... so a few of those sound usable.. but I'm still torn.

I know once people hear it they will know it....

"Pepper Pal"
"Pepper App"
"Pepper Plus"
"Pepper Grow"
"Pepper Log"

A few more just off the top of my head. ;)

This sounds like a great idea! Wish I was more tech-y so I could help.

What I could come up with on my 20 min. lunch break...
The:
pepper plotter
pepper helper
hotter helper
heat helper
heat tracker
hot spot

Keep brainstorming pepper-related terms! Certainly with every one here we can come up with a good one...

Cap (sicum) Map
Chili Cheat Sheet
Chili Pepper Garden Helper
Chili Tracker

I'm kind of liking PepperIQ or PepperHQ now.. its catchy and memorable.

I think that's what Ill go with. I wanted to make sure I had some SEO terms in there, but I think it would catch on the shorter the name.

Hey if you need any kind of Logo design help that is one thing I can help with and am good at. ;)

It is kind of a touch choice between the "IQ" and "HQ" because your software is really doing both. I think your safe no matter which one you pick and yes they are both very memorable. :)

Lol I got both...

if you feel artistic today... make up some logos.. if you want....

I figured PepperHQ, could be the site... and PepperIQ could be the software.

fits nicely......

shoot me a PM... well chat about it...

If you need help with anything I would be interested in helping out. C/C++/C# experience with Windows GUI experience. My job is actually as a software developer as well. Send me a PM if you want to follow up on my offer.

Hi fellow gardeners! I am the author of HERB.IQ, I actually made a release of a previous version with all the sticky references removed. I just posted the source code and a manual installer you can use, just make sure you have the .NET 4 framework installed.

Project is here --> http://plantiq.codeplex.com/

manual install is here --> http://plantiq.codeplex.com

and the .net 4 framework is here --> http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17851

I'll post the actual installer install and update it with the most recent build of HERB.IQ's code in a week or two.

Lx
