Garden Porn 7-10-09

Well, it has been a while since I have posted any new photos of my pepper forest. I have been real busy with work and with the family. Also, if you were around last night, I have been busy experimenting with some drink recipes I found at www.thebar.com.

So here goes....

See man! I knew they'd bounce back from all that wind and rain! Your plants look excellent, and I can't wait to see those beds by the end of this summer!

Ya, you were right, they all bounced back with the exception of 1 white hab plant. But loosing just one plant may have been sad, it was good odds overall.

Looks good. I'm starting to think people up north have a little better luck with their plants this time of year.

Us northerners have a little longer to wait for the weather to cooperate. It is finally starting to get hot here. So, I should start seeing more and more pods along with them ripening up.

Its has been close to 100 everyday for the past 2 weeks except for one day it was 93, and it has only rained 2 times since April. But everytime it has rained, my plants went nuts for a week afterwards with growth.

Raised Beds

Great Garden!

If you don't mind, I'd like to copy your raised beds. Would you share a few details?

-Did you treat the interior of the cinderblocks in any way?
-Did you use a weed barrier or other liner?
-Did you reinforce or just stack the cinderblocks?
-How did you fill the holes? Soil then rocks or all rock?

Anything else you did other than just stacking the blocks and filling with soil would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Everything looks fantastic PF...absolutely gorgeous...I am really glad the beds are working out for you...they will be a complete jungle at the end of the season..

Pepperfreak,

I really hate giving kudos to anyone from the opposite end of the state (from Cincy) but they are due to you. The plants look great, the effort, money and time you put into creating those raised beds are paying huge dividends.

Just think, come fall time, you can stick some posts in the blocks, add a bit of framing and plastic and have an instant Green house that will extend your season a few weeks.

Great job, especially for a northeastern Buckeye!

very nice looking gardens. raised beds out of bricks - that's a different idea, I used pressure treated wood.

Gonna have a lot of harvesting to do when it all comes ripe, but it'll be worth it.

I got the idea from being on here...
It was real easy once you create a level base. The first bed I made wasn't real level and it looks wierd but works.
I didn't treat the interior blocks, but I used a high $$ weed barrier with about 3 - 4 inches of gravel on top of it for drainage, then the soil.
I just laid the blocks and put gravel in the center holes as each layer was laid.
This is the second year using these beds and so far they haven't shifted too noticeably.

Thanks AJ. They are already turning into a jungle. I think next year, I'll plant them a little farther a part, as someone mentioned that they looked too close together. But, they are all growing nicely.

Well, thanks Mike...I'll take that as a real compliment
However, my wife is from Cincinnati and we visit her parents all the time. So does that make me a part-time Cincinnati-er?

I thought long and hard about my building material and decided that I wanted something that wouldn't rot or attracted bugs. These beds should last me a long long time, unless my wife keeps backing into them as she did Monday.

Really nice. My plants are coming along well too. Just started getting some small ripe pods off of a few. Lots of flowers. I'll post some pics sometime, but I'm glad it wasn't a real competition or you have burried me!
