Good Read....The Truth about Garden Remedies

A quick read of about 150 pages, talks about a lot of topics we discuss here and their validity. At least according to the author, Jeff Gillman who posseses a PHD and Master's.

Discusses organic fertilizer, Epsom salt, mycorrhizae, as well as compost tea, amongst many other relevant topics.

Btw, the compost tea, according to Dr. Gilman, should be avoided......A little different view than you get here.

I got the book at my local library, check if out.
 
Compost tea should be avoided? I find that odd.

I would like to know what his argument against it is?
Was he talking about AACT? If he means the tea that people make by just letting compost sit in water where it can become anaerobic I would agree with him but if he means AACT I think science is not on his side. ;)

They don't have it at the local libraries here unfortunately.
 
Good book, you will enjoy it.

His thoughts were, all the ingredients in the teas were good, but no scientific evidence that the tea improved the plant.
 
Keep an eye out for me, looking for a place that talks more about scientific or biological side of vegetable farming. Maybe a college botanical based forum.

Thanks armac. I have a book that sounds similar, "Plant Propagation" by The American Horticultural Society.
Who wrote or published that book?

I don't use any manure in my compost pile so those bacteria are not a concern to me.
Dr. Elaine Ingram would disagree with him on this subject and she is considered the leading authority on the soil web. ;)

Dr. Jeff Gillman's exact words in summary were:

"I believe that compost tea has potential as both a source of nutrition and, perhaps, as a control for disease, so I won't say that it is a useless practice, but until more research is available I would avoid it."

One of the nice things about having a Kindle is the ability to look things up again quickly. :cool:
 
One of the nice things about having the book is I can read it on page 130 right now.....so your earlier statement..."he didn't say to avoid it" is inaccurate. You have the quote right "from your kindle"

My mistake. My original post was from memory until I looked it up on the Kindle and posted that earlier today. ;)

That is his opinion and he is welcome to it. His PhD is in entomology though so when we speaks about insects I take notice.
Dr. Ingram that I mentioned earlier has her expertise in soil science and she advocates compost tea so I will take her word over Jeff Gillman's on this subject.
