Growing in the Pacific NorthWest Community GrowLog

There have been several yearly PNW grow logs, the last in 2017,
so @FGpepperguy and I thought it might be a good idea to start
an on-going glog for the PNW. This is a community glog, so anyone
is free to post here, whether in the PNW or not. Hopefully, this forum
thread will provide for some information sharing particular to growing
in our crazy, unpredictable weather.

So, that being said, welcome all. Don't be strangers!

"Yes, we can grow chili peppers in the
Pacific NorthWest! Usually."

Thought there would be more action since this thread was created, but the season is winding down. I'll post my hydro plants now and my other plants once they get put in the greenhouse. Last year I made two bonchi plants and made the mistake of bringing them into my computer/office room where I was trying hydro for the first time. I fought aphids from Oct 2020 - June 2021 and finally decided to throw everything out once I noticed aphids crawling on my bedroom night stand one room over. I upgraded to two spider farmer SF2000 grow lights. One in the computer/office room and the other in the garage. Try and keep the fertilizer at 1400ppm, pH around 6.3. Never adjusted the pH though. My 85% bottle of phosphoric acid is doing nothing at the moment. Light is 12 hours, bubblers go 24x7. I tried to keep more compact plants indoors due to high limitations. Using General hydroponics CaliMagic at 1ml per gallon of water. Fox Farm Grow Big 6-4-4 and Tiger Bloom 2-8-4. I haven't used any Fox Farm Big bloom yet as I can't tell if its intended for hydro and I'm worried about algae growth. The reflective covers I made are great in keeping the algae from growing. Had to learn that lesson 3 times.

Lovin' the hydro set-up. @FGpepperguy! I'm still too
chicken to really get into hydro growing. OWing a few
plants is about all I have the gumption for in the winter.
Although, I may try a few under the lights this winter.
We'll see. In the meantime, I'll enjoy your winter grow!

Your plants look great. You can't go wrong with Semmilas
la Palma seeds. If all goes well, they will be B-I-G by Spring.
Thanks for getting this grow log up and running.

I didn't think my hydro peppers were growing fast, but the difference is significant in the last 6 weeks. The indoor plants (non-garage) are in the same order as the first post.

I guess you get huge leaves when you give a lot of N! Never seen them this big. Sparkling water can for size reference.

Still a few wilds growing outdoors, taking advantage of
night temps in the 40's and even approaching 50 here
and there.

Cumari c. praetermissum, Brazil still chugging along. Still
flowering a little, but flowers white (no sun.) Seed from
@leo72.

Cumari Flibu, c. praetermissum. Cut back 75% and tucked
under the eaves. I might get 6 ripe pods  Seed from
@Pepper-Guru.

Trying to salvage a couple of Rocopica Brown, center row, and
c. galapagoense, round pots in back row, along with two volunteers
which I think are Yellow Pequin and Cappuccino Chiltepin, front row.

The weather is very PNW here today, so here's my TFM I cut back yesterday. This is my first overwinter plant - next to my chair, of course.

Btw @FGpepperguy, I get huge leaves on indoor bubbler buckets, too.

Go for it, @PaulG! Just a five-gallon bucket and a little air pump! Fun winter project. Not sure how little light you could get away with, though..

@PaulG for us being so close I wonder why you have so much better results. What's your soil mix? I usually just get a yard of the best stuff I can get at S&H Landscape supply.

Looking food @Uncle Eckley ! However my attention quickly moved to the pie plate thing.... What's that?

Garage hydro and green house update:

Peri-Peri (left) and Orange Thai (right) - need to figure out how to keep the plants from falling over.

Garage in fabric bags. All 4 plants (2 hydro and 2 in soil) are on a seedling starter mat.

Your greenhouse don't look too bad, @FGpepperguy, pretty typical
for high humnitity and low solar exposure. I keep my greenhouse
plants pretty well trimmed out, cutting off twigs and branches with
no fruit, or just green pods that won't ever ripen. Also pick off yellowing
leaves every so often just to keep everything tidy  I just have to accept
raggedy plants outside this time of year, although most are sort of protected.

As for plant mix, I start seeds in Black Gold general purpose potting mix,
and transplant seedlings into 2-liter square or #1 round nursery pots with
a mix of Fox Farms Ocean Forest and Happy Frog, 1 bag each. For plant-
out I use garden blend from Best Buy Landscape Supply in Beaverton,
and recycled potting soil to top off my big containers and recycled soil
in the botton 60% of the small pots (#2-#5 nursery pots.) I usually buy a
bag or two of good old Turf King Potting Soil from Freddie's to use during
the grow season, if needed.

@FGpepperguy - I meant to ask what size the ppots
are in the greenhouse pictures above.

@Uncle Eckley - A question I often ask myself, Unc!
Oh yeah, welcome to PNW weather. I figure our climates must be similar.
What latitude is Williamsburg?
