HabaneroHead's 2014 Glog - Nuclear Destruction

Hello Everyone!

Thought it would be a great idea to start my glog. :P
I am going to start my seeds this year earlier, which will be the 31st of December.
As the topic title indicates, this year is not going to be childplay, thanks to Rick (stickman) and Conor (Saugapepper) who shared some real kick-ass peppers with me.
I am stil using my T5 lamp with a 59 cm long special grow-bulb (Osram Fluora 18W), but I am in the process to create a bigger grow box, to satisfy the needs of the plants. I know it is not the best setup, but according to my experience it is just enough till we get enough sunlight (from April).
I am planning to sow 5 seeds per each variety, starting with the Chinenses first, using plant trays. ( I have the 7 Pot Burgundy from two source, which means 10 seeds :P )

Here is my list for 2014:

7 Pot Savannah
7 Pot Burgundy
7-pot Barrackpore
7 Pot Yellow
7 Pot Douglah Alphanerdz-strain
SBJ7 (scotch bonnet-Jonah-7)
Peach Bhut
White Bhut
Black Naga
Naga Morich
Red Naga
Not Yellow Bhut
Funky Reapers
Jays Peach x TS
Trinidad Scorpion CARDI Yellow
TS Brainstrain (red)
TS Brainstrain (yellow)
Brown Moruga Scorpion
Chocolate Habanero
Magnum Orange Habanero
Maya Red Habanero
Red Habanero
Numex Poblano
Holy Mole' Hybrid Pasilla
Serrano Tampiqueno

I hope you will enjoy my glog this year!

Hi Everyone,

Statistics update time.
I was checking the cells this morning, and I found that only a few seeds will pop in the near future, the rest is dead... So I have sown some... As I see, they should be out in 7 days, so the big brothers and sisters won't really overgrow them (if so, I will plant them to individual pots). Now the best place they can have is in the grow box. Let's cross our fingures.
And now the stats:

Thanks for watching!

Yeah Scott, I swear by my heat mats too. I couldn't get a timely germination without them!

Balázs,   You're getting some great percentages brother! I can tell you're gonna have a banner year... hope you have a space big enough for all the seedlings when they get about 30cm tall. :)

Wow Balázs,

If I went with the 7 day germ plan I would have just 5 plants...I just let them be, and low and behold some pop after 3 weeks or more.

But I don't have the heat mat...a must for next year!

Well, when I started reading this forum, I was amazed by Alabamajack's grow room.
I suggest you to check it, there is a lot of useful info there, and it is pretty well documented. What I understood from there: before germination there are two key things, temperature and humidity. If you know what the peppers need, and you provide it to them, (and of course the seeds are viable), you will have success in germination.

Well, well... :P Our house is quite big, and I have a separate room for my peppers :P  It will be pretty crowded I know... Currently this is not the only thing which concerns me:
- At the end of April, beginning of May I need to take them home to my parents. 100 plants cannot be taken in one round
- And we arrived to the next issue, I need a car, a.s.a.p
- Why? Not only for the peppers. I have a small ChileHead onhis/her way, who is due to arrive in the mid of July!

I'm with Devv still praying for some to pop after 3 weeks. Very organized table. I just cross mine out. The whole garden plan looks like chicken scratch by the end of the year.
Thank you! Ahh, I have exactly the same issue, do you know how many times I had to overwrite my Excel charts? :P  This is my first year I am using trays instead of individual pots. Without Excel I could not do it...
Picture update time!

Closer shot on the thermometer

There are only a few left from the first round

I think this little guy won't make it. I do not really see the place of the true leaves on it... On the other side it has a heart shape, which is funny :P

Second tray. Now the gaps are filled with fresh seeds. Hopefully they will pop up soon.

Thaks for watching!

Great looking operation. Very organized. And the temps look to be ideal.

Congrats on the comin little one man! My son was born seven months ago now and I love every second of it. He helps out with the garden a great deal!

Most excellent Balázs... good news on all fronts! Better make use of the spare room this year, it may not be there next season... ;)

What kind of cars are available out your way?
Lol! :P We have 3 rooms, thank's for God!
We have mostly European cars available (Opel, Skoda, Audi, BMW, Suzuki - manufactured in Hungary).
My dream is this one, maybe from the year of 2008

Thank you! :P  I do not know the gender of my child yet, but what is sure, he/she is going to like the peppers! :onfire:

Good luck with getting an Octavia... Skoda's always had a solid reputation as far as I've heard on this side of the pond...  are you shooting for the liftback or the estate car? Here in the States that would be a hatchback and a station wagon.   ;)

Thanks for posting the link Balázs, he certainly has a nice setup!

I started so early I wasn't really concerned about the germ rates, but this morning I dug out a heat mat the wife bought me for my back. It runs 87° so I have the tray on it...it's a rig, but what the heck ;)

Congrats on the incoming chilihead!

Thanks, Rick! In the past, Skoda was not that good at all. There is a joke on why it was good to have a Skoda (which had its back windshield heated): it was keeping your hands warm until you were pushing it when it broke down  Nowadays it is produced by the Volkswagen, using almost the same materials as for the VWs, but for less money. I would like to have a 'coupé' :P Seriously, thanks for these words, good to learn something which is not linked to accounting :P I would like to buy a bigger car, but not a station wagon, but who knows. The used car markek can be tricky nowadays, and it is hard to find a good one for your money.

Lol :P That is a good idea! Be careful with the humidity, my friend. I am not sure if each type can bear it. Mine is a reptile mat, can be used in high humidity, so do the ones sold in the USA.
Thank you for the wishes, I can't wait to hold him/her im my arms!

Looks like you're off and running well this year.  Plants are looking good. Good luck.
Thanks, Jeff! :-)

I'd say, update time, but there is nothing really to report for today. Some of the seedlings are showing their true leaves, and I am still waiting for the later planted seeds to sprout. I am expecting to have some signs of life on Sunday, the earliest. (I sowed them at last Saturday midnight) As I see, I was keeping the soil too moist with the first round, which might have caused the seeds to rot. I would not like to repeat that, so this time I have to be careful. The hardest thing is that I am not using individual pots now, but trays, so bottom watering can be done only for all of them. I did it yesterday, so for a week or so I do not have to water them, only to mist those cells in which I planted the second round of seeds.

Thanks for watching!

Can't wait to see new growth pics! Sounds like you're doing everything right. How exactly do you go about bottom watering?
I am going to post some pics soon. I was covering a plastic crate with foil, into which I can pour the water. Then I just place the tray into the water, and allow it to take it up the.
I just checked the seedlings, and discovered some weird spots on them.Light stain-like spots, on the cotyledons. It can be:
-1. too much water (possible, the tray is quite heavy now)
-2. too high temps (28 Celsius, which can be high for the seedlings, as 24-25 Celsius would be the ideal)
-3. discovered some flies in the box, most probably these little guy were hiding in the soil
-4. infection

I hope I did not cause any permanent issue to them.

Possible solutions:
-1. I will let the trays dry out, and will be more careful with watering
-2. I have to switch off the heat mat... The only reason it is still on is the secondly planted seeds, which are due to sprout around Sunday
-3. I am using a method which works with fruit flies: put some white wine vinegar into a cup with a lot of detergent. It works as a trap, since they are trying to land on the surface of the liquid, which cannot be successful, so thy are drowning
4. No idea for the solution

Balázs

Hello Everyone!

It turned out that the spots I was seeing are just dirt...so one issue is solved :-)
On the other side, as you will see on my pics, they are a little bit yellow, as I was slightly overwater them.
Two early baby from the second sow popped out on Friday morning, hitting the absolute record: 5 days from last Saturday midnight! :-) Now I have 8 or 9 from the second batch, and two of them has helmet issue, what I am trying to cure.
There are incredible success stories, and total fails... The Barrackpore seeds were the second one...only one germinated, and that guy is really weak. Hopefully I can have a healthy plant to produce some seeds, but if not, I will have to search for another seeds source.

Tray Nr#1

Tray Nr#2

Trays Nr#3&4

They are beautiful, aren't they? :-)

And the issue section...the cotyledons of this poor guy have rot, before he came out from the soil...too much water...

Helmet-head issue cure. I am trying to increase the humidity, to soften the seed.

Thanks for watching!

Balázs

Looking good.  I have had rot inside a helmet and that may be more the issue than too much water.  IMO you need to water to loosen the helmet to get it to push it off.  I don't know a way around the water/no water helmet head issue.  I just mist them throughout the day until it comes off.  If it looks too tight, I try to take clippers to the outside edges of the seed.

Things are looking nice.

Very nice Balázs!

You're gonna be rolling in pods this year!

Helmet heads are not a good thing, I think I run 50-50% on saving them. I used nail clippers on two yesterday....I think I may have upped my percentage ;)

Thanks for the kind words! Helmet issue sucks...50-50 % is good, but I have lost all of them so far... Hopefully I will have more success with these ones.
With the new seedlings I have more than 100 plants in total, within 2 weeks I can re-pot them. I purchased trays with bigger cells (now I have 51 cells per tray, those have 28, only), and I think I am going to use them, as it is easier to move them in-and-out from the grow box, then doing the same with 100 individual pots.

Due to my climate I'm a bit ahead of your schedule. The larger plants are in 6" or wannabe 1 gal pots, moving them in and out this time of year gets to be a chore. 9 fit in a box and I have 9 or 10 boxes...I'm sooo ready for dirt day..
