HAJ's hajj to chili

Guess it is about time I make a GLOG...
I'm living in cold Denmark, which means that everything is indoors, either in the greenhouse (spring and summer only) or in the south facing windows in the house. This again means that everything is in pots, and most in too small pots (that is also a consequence of growing more plants than I have room for).

This is the list of plants that I currently have:
Updates 2013-08-13 in red

Annum:
- Filius Blue
- Peruvian Purple
- Hungarian Hot Wax * 2
- Some Cayenne type of uncertain origin * 2

Bacatum:
- Aji Lemon Drop (4th season)
- Aji Benito
- Blondie * 2
- Criolla Sella

Chinense:
- Chocolate Habanero (2nd season)
- GRIF 9293 (2nd season)
- Some Bhut Jolokia like chili of uncertain origin (2nd season)
- Some big orange chinense of uncertain origin * 2
- Fatali White (almost as yellow as the Lemon Drop)
- Pimenta da Neyde
- Cheiro do Norte * 2
- Not CGN 21500
- Trinidad Perfume
- Bonda ma Jaques

Frutescens:
- Kaantari Mulaku (a tiny landrace from Kerala, India). This one doesn't like Danish climate. But it's mrs. HAJ's favourite...
- Some landrace from Changanacheri, Kerala, India. Turns white then red like Tabasco, but is more round. Locals just call it "chili" !

Homemade crosses:
- HAJ12D F1 and F2, Chocolate Habanero X GRIF 9293 (Chinense). Hoping to get a chili with some of the taste of the Chocolate Habanero, but with less heat.
- HAJ13A F1, Aji Lemon Drop(Baccatum) X Chocolate Habanero(Chinense). Mostly for the fun of it. But if I can get a chili that is cold tolerant like Baccatum and has brown chilies, then I'll be happy.
- HAJ13B F1, Aji Benito X Blondie (Baccatum). Hope to get a big rounded pod in cream white color.
- HAJ13C F1, <some orange chinense> X Trinidad Perfume

Pests:
- White Fly
- Aphids
- Spider mites
- you name it, I got it ...

A big thank you for all the fantastic info. and GLOG's on this site, and special thanx to POTAWIE, Spicegeist and gasificada for inspiration on making crosses.

That's all for now. Thanx for looking

Yes, I actually saw your post, but when I wanted to reply, it was gone. Yes, my chili plants have spread to the kids rooms too... Which means I have to try a brand new cross: JIGSAW x LEGO

Re. brown Lemon Drop, Lots of inviable seeds, so it will take some time

Time for a small update. (edited, had put the wrong picture for plant #5)

As promised pictures of the Not CGN 21500 F2s (and yes they are F2s since there are lots of differences between the plants). No clue who the father was.  5 plants grown.
#1: Dark stems. Slightly dark leaves. No ripe pods yet.
022_zpsea6a859a.jpg

#2: Green plant. Habanero shaped pods, with thick walls and quite some heat
024_zps435c9a13.jpg

#3: Green plant. Round pods, with very thick walls. Very hot.
026_zpsc28a2bc5.jpg

#4: Green leaves, dark stems. Pods are round and a bit flat. Very thick walls. No heat.

See you next time.

I got a shout out! I got a shout out! :woohoo:

And it's only taken me nearly a year to notice...

So this is the one here? It's a really nice lookin' pod! Really keen to see what the F2 grow has in store.

The Pimenta da Neyde hybrid and the Blondie hybrid are also very interesting. I am jealous! I have been unsuccessful crossing with both of those varieties.

(BTW, your jigsaw x lego joke was really bad... but it made me laugh :P)

OK, that's one glog catch-up down and only 1,000,000 to go....

Welcome gasificada

Yes, this is the F1. One F2 to be found above, but boringly just like the F1. More plants coming along!

PdN cross took me like 30 attempts, kept trying with every single flower on the mother plant until it worked.

Re. Blondie crossing, use Blondie as the father, then you don't have to worry if the pod is ripe or not. And no pollen problems with Baccatums.

Boring? Naaah, I seriously like the look of the F1.... she's like a smooth and sexy woman. :D

But if you aren't getting the results you were hoping for, yeah, that can be disappointing. :( Hope at least one of the other F2's will give you what you want!

You are more patient than me. I give up trying to cross anything long before I hit the 30 attempt mark!

Agree it is a nice pod, just not what i was hoping for.

(High) time for an update !

Today's special: HAJ13B, Aji Benito X Blondie
First a family picture. From left to right father Blondie, mother Aji Benito, F1 and then 3 different F2's (the first is not fully ripe, but the best available for this shot)
018_zpsbed2fdac.jpg

A lineup of the first of the F2s. "Aji (Tequila) Sunrise" anybody ? Heat is mild to medium like Aji Benito. Colour change is very slow, like Blondie, from the tip upwards. It will go fully red like Aji Benito.
001_zps8996ea88.jpg

Second F2. This is exdactly what I was hoping for: a white (or at least very pale orange), big enough to use for stuffing pod. Mild-medium heat, like Aji Benito. F3s coming up early next season !
019_zps04fd3dce.jpg

The last F2 looks very much like a Blondie, and has at least the same heat.

A few shots of the very beautiful Aji White Fantasy. Hardly any heat in this one, but who cares with this look  ;)

Thanx for coming by,

Nice work! There is already an annuum named Tequila Sunrise and a NuMex Sunrise, so I think you should stick with Aji and maybe come up with a new surname...

Thanx Donnie.

Agree that there is enough Sunrise chilies already, but these pods do have quite some resemblance to the colourful drink I used to drink in the 90s. However, I'm not going to grow this line of the cross, so no need to give it a name. Should others want to, they are free to give it a name (send me a PM for seeds).

My attention will go to the "fat" F2 of the cross. When I have a good F3 candidate I'll name it (I have of course thought of many different names, but we'll see how it looks next year).

Finally got a ripe SB7J
003_zps95c42f39.jpg

Less than 1 cm. No seeds. Have to say that the plant have not at all been behaving. But after a looong wait some more pods are now showing, with a much better shape. More updates when the things shape up.

Time for an update !

Seed collection from HAJ13A F1, Aji Lemon Drop X Choclate Habanero. Takes quite some patience to get a few good seeds. 80 pods cleaned. Every single seed shown on picture.
012_zps37dbddf2.jpg

A small colour study.
In the center HAJ13B F2 #2, Aji Benito X Blondie. To the right Blondie, continuing clockwise, Aji Benito, the mother of HAJ13D (2 pods), HAJ13D F1 (3 pods), CGN 21500 and finally on top Aji White Fantasy.
001_zps971d89e1.jpg

Finally got a ripe CGN 23209. Nice colour, boring taste. Crossed with Cheiro do Norte. F1 seeds in the dirt. I don't expect to see any pods this year, but should be early enough next season to also see some ripe F2s next year.
005_zps3eb70804.jpg

A few more F2/F3 pictures from my first cross: Chocolate Habanero X GRIF 9293, HAJ12D. 2 F2's, #11 and #12. One mild, one hot
001_zps4ec51fd1.jpg

F2 #12 and offspring F3 #12-1, #12-2 and #12-3. All F3's have same heat as F2 #12. Taste is ok, but not as good as Choclate Habanero ...
002_zps70b30609.jpg

And then a homemade sauce: Shawarma Chili sauce. Not sure if the sauce type is known outside Denmark. It should be !
My sauce is based on this recipe (all non-Danes, use google translate, and if still in doubt, ask me):
http://www.grillguru.dk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=10776&hilit=shawarma+chili

Have used the original recipe many times, but this time I wanted to twist it: Yellow !
So homemade tomato paste from yellow tomatoes, crushed Lemon Drop and Trinidad Perfume, yellow powder from mostly Bonda ma Jaques and Lemondrop, the yellowest rape seed oil I could find. Should have had sundried tomatoes in, but have not succeeded in keeping the yellow colour when drying tomatoes, so I cheated and used only the oil from sundried tomatoes, not to ruin the colour, but get some of the taste.
006_zpsf2325f9d.jpg

Bonus picture: Eggplant harvest
002_zps1061cdb2.jpg

Teaser: the first F2's of my PdN cross, HAJ13D, has just started turning. One white'ish, one peach ... More pictures next time !

Time to close this glog.

First a picture of my SB7J. The only pod that came out true from a very limited harvest. Nice taste though
005_zpsa63a4c97.jpg

Next a picture of HAJ13C F1. Good size pods with a funny shape and nice taste
049_zps212d9078.jpg

Then 2 pictures of HAJ13D harvest. From the 9 plants carrying fruit almost all were approx. same shape and colour as seen on the first picture. Second picture is from the one plant where ripe pods had a bit of purple shading. Like CGN 21500. But I want more purple, so I've sown more F2 plants, and I'm considering backcrossing with PdN to get more colour
004_zps981773e3.jpg

002_zps755798e7.jpg

Finally, a harvest picture from the peak of the season
014_zpsd4ef5770.jpg

That the end of 2014 from here. I'll start a new GLOG for next year. See you on the other side.
