hello from a new uk chilli head

Just to say hello really,

I'm a relatively new chilli addict and grower, although I've been into cooking with them for some time. I am currently on my first grow having four types coming on quite nicely. Jalpeno, apache, cheyenne and super frenso. Anyone grown these before, any tips that you might like to share?

Thanks in advance!

Hope you're all well people!

Welcome aboard!!

Well, in my experience, Jalapeños like lots of sun (so do all of the peppers..) and if you let them slightly stress between waterings (when they're fairly mature) you'll get a nice hot Jalapeño.

Also, if you can wait, let a few of them turn red. They'll have a slightly sweeter taste, and still pack the famous heat they're known for.

Hey Guys thanks a lot for the warm welcome (pardon the pun), and thanks for the tips on the jalapeno's,, am definately gonna be letting them mature...

I have just managed to buy a Bhut Jolokia plant from a place in the Uk, its only a little thing at the moment but I'm hoping to get some fiery bad boys of this one, will let you know how i go on:P

welcome to THP from the Great Land Down Under! you have now embarked on a lifelong obsession - you have been warned!

I think those Bhuts may be a little hot for you, I'll pm my address so you can send the pods over, ok :hell:

 hahaha, they probably will be but I have to get the buggers to fruit yet.. I have a (possibly a stupid) question..

do i have to have more than one bhut plant to get the thing to pollinate? I have read that I will have to pollinate it by hand?

your help would be most appreciated cause I will need to get another one ordered quick, I dont wanna grow the thing only to find out I cant get any fruit from it..

and yes if i can get it to fruit I'll send you a pod no worries.

cheers

That's not a stupid question, and no, you don't need a second plant. Peppers both self pollinate and cross-pollinate readily. Cross-pollinating will not effect the fruit this season, but if you want to save seed, you'll need to take precautions. There are a couple of excellent threads on saving pure seed that have popped up in the Hot Pepper forum in the last couple of days.

I cheated too, and bought a plant. Actually, I cheat every year and buy a few plants, but this is the first year I've had a Bhut Jolokia. I don't really have room to grow everything that I would like to from seed. I grown tomatoes, flowers, and herbs as well, and Cross Country makes it so easy to get the varieties that I only want one plant of, that I, well, cheat a little bit every year.

it ain't really cheating either, sometimes it is just convenience BUT you missed half the fun of growing them ;-)

Oh yeah, I do love growing them, too. I just don't have enough space to grow everything I want!

I really need a green house.

Welcome! Nothing wrong with ordering from Cross Country. For years I have been buying plants from them to grow for my personal use. I just don't have the time to start the plants from seed and make sure I get good germination. It's easiest for me to just get the seedling and transplant. So far every year has been great. Except for last year I kind of stressed my plants right before I transplanted and I lost one of the little guys. Sucks too because it was one of my Thai Hot Dragon Hybrids. I love those chilies! Nice and spicy! -Lars-
