I was told they're either chocolate bhutlahs or Carolina reapers, although I'm not sure.

I would take a look at what Judy at pepperlovers.com has for sale, she is one of the best vendors here. I can't say just what it may be as it could be a cross of anything most likely a baccatum of some sort.

Update: http://imgur.com/s5EiSzU a couple of the peppers are beginning to change color, looks like they're turning brown! Does this mean they're chocolate bhutlahs after all?

The latest image isn't working but I'd say they look a lot more like the bishop's crown than the champion. If they're turning brown then they're probably a chocolate something though. My guess would be that the seller harvested the seeds from an unintentionally cross-polinated chocolate bhutlah and is an amateur with poor plant segregation.

Possible cross. But the shape isnt right for a bhutlah. And the pod is too smooth for a reaper. (although i have seen the rare smooth reaper, not to be confused with a smooth criminal)

they are Bishops Crown pepper
