Homemade worm farm

This is the worm farm i just put together in my greenhouse. Pretty cheap and easy and from what i hear well worth it.


My bottom bin to catch all the worm juice. bricks to keep up the worm bin from the juice

Put mesh over the juice bucket to keep worms and castings from falling out.

Had to spray paint the two worm buckets as i just found some ones in the garage and they were clear.

In goes the worm bin

I put in a light layer of mushroom compost.

Put in some old okra plants and eggplants from last year

cardboard. Make sure after each cardbord layer to spray with water to get it moist.

Food scraps

Repeated until about full.

Put the lid on
im going to leave this all to set for about a week. which will allow the food to break down alittle bit more for the worm.

Once this bin gets all full of casting i have another bin i will set on top of the casting with some food in it and the worms will crawl to the new bin.

Sweet, i made one of my own not long ago too. It is now producing worm jizz and the worms have quite an appetite, they can get through at least 500grms of food scraps a day. I was quite surprised how much the scraps settle down, it will take quite a while to even fill the bottom layer up!

Sweet, i made one of my own not long ago too. It is now producing worm jizz and the worms have quite an appetite, they can get through at least 500grms of food scraps a day. I was quite surprised how much the scraps settle down, it will take quite a while to even fill the bottom layer up!

I got it going just before the holidays so about one month. Ordered 2000 worms from ebay, red wrigglers, blue worms and tigers.
You will probably find that it will take a couple of weeks to produce jizz unless you force it too by adding some water from time to time, i can't wait until i can use the castings. Probably another two months or so though.

I can't wait to start one of these. Thanks for all the photos. I have a compost pile with tons of worms, but would love to have the juice and castings to add to pepper and tomato starts. Thanks for sharing.

There are a few way. Sieve them out, make a pile under strong light- they will head towards the bottom, by hand, place another bin above where they are and fill that with scraps and bedding- they will move into it when all the food out of bin one has been eaten.

Make sure you guys are discarding the "juice or Jizz" at the bottom of the bins. That's actually called "Leachate" and is toxic to plants and humans and shouldn't be used.

Just last night I made my homemade worm farm, was planning on getting a ton of worm juice. Why was this not brought up earlier with all the chilli guru's here? I guess the juice is going down the drain.

Worms stomachs remove all pathogens from their food, i can't for the life of me think of any reason the jizz would be toxic.
Besides people USE IT TO FEED THIER PLANTS WITH!

You keep throwing yours out LHGT, as for me and my family IN JIZZ WE TRUST!

Infinity, there is nothing but worm jizz and water in this setup. Purple Naga and some store bought sweet bell as an experiment.
If jizz is toxic (bs in my humble opinion) then how, just how are the plants thriving the way they are?

The benefits of worm farms are 1 for there castings and 2 for the ability to "brew" worm tea. The reason why it's called worm tea is because you need to brew it in order for the beneficial microbes to grow and multiply. Once they have "brewed" for a day or so you have essentially grown a few hundred thousand colonies into a few hundred million. Leachate is waste / excrement and depending how concentrated the leachate is you could end up killing your plant. What most growers don't understand is that the waste is not tea and you will often read that mistake. However uneducated growers will use that waste and believe there is no harm mainly because it is either not concentrated enough for to harm the plant immediately or 2 their farm is somewhat inhert and really doesn't generate enough waste from the few worms to cause any problems. However if you have a thriving 7 tier farm that has been up for a few years like I do you will see a big difference in the color of the leachate as it will be dark brown or almost black indicating the high toxic levels.

Anything in high enough concentrations is toxic. Try growing your plants is too rich of a mixture of anything and they will cark it. Give them too much co2 or oxygen and they will cark it, too much water they will cark it. Worm jizz is not an exception thats why it is diluted, my jizz comes out at approx 4500ppm, no way i would pour it on straight but i would not do that with hydro nutes either.
