How do you transact money?

Online, we use paypal because doing so means we never see your credit / debit card number.  Also, most of the complaints of paypal are by sellers who get the money refunded to the buyer.  I figure it gives the buyer more confidence.  It lets you use credit, debit, or even checks.

In person, we use Square which lets you do much the same.

Help me out here cause I am very confused.  A customer just kind of ignores our online store and asks questions.  I started getting confused when s/he asked about payment.  I replied we use Paypal which lets you use credit, debit, and checks.  S/he replies that Paypal are a bunch of thieves.  So I explain we are about to have a phone number, when we do, we can take credit and debit over the phone via square.  S/he explains they dont use credit or debit.  So my wife reminded me square will let us take checks too.  I explain that but they say they wont give their account number out over the phone.

Is someone screwing with me or is there something I am missing?

They can send a personal check, certified check or money order by mail. Takes longer to complete the transaction due to mail times. If they send a personal check...Do NOT ship until 10-14days after you deposit their check into your bank account to make sure the personal check clears and doesnt bounce.

Also, if they have a bank account, you can send them a PayRequest....through paypal...and they can pay directly from their bank account.

At some point, you gotta ask yourself if it is worth your time and headache. I have a few repeat customers who mail a check. If i know them, i ship right away. If i dont know them...wait for the check to clear.

Ps-if you know you are a solid business person, never intentionally screwing over a customer,(which we believe you are) dont cave in and send stuff prior to payment. If they want your products, they will figure out how to pay for it using the options you have available. Heck, they can give the cash to someone they know who has a pp account and let them make the purchase.

You can't please everyone but you may want to look into Stripe. https://stripe.com

Modern processor similar to PayPal w/o the stigma attached (some people just hate PayPal and sometimes for no good reason). Can also accept ACH.

Or simply thank them for visiting your store and let them know that you offer no other options for them.

It sounds like you're already providing plenty of payment options for customers to choose from.
 
Stripe is certainly another option that can be provided, as THP mentioned, and I find it has similarities to both PayPal & Square. Just like either of those it can handle several options on the customer end, and it can be integrated into a website.
 
Here in Canada we have access to Interac e-Transfer, which allows anyone with a bank account at any number of major banks in the country to send funds via email. The sender signs into their online banking and sets up the transfer, which automatically does two things as soon as the user confirms the transfer: 1) It withdraws the funds from their account, and 2) sends an email to the recipient with links to sign into the bank of their choice. Once the recipient gets the email they can follow a link, sign into their bank account (from their bank's website), and deposit the funds using the password provided by the sender.. Is there possibly anything like that down in the US that you might offer up to this customer? :)

I never use PayPal. Long story, but my personal opinion is; they are crooks.
 
I try to use USPS Money Orders, or I have even used cash to people I trust.
 
Do not get me wrong, I buy stuff all the time on the internet, using a CC, just not from a vendor that only uses PayPal.

Ah ha!  OK, I am an idiot.  I never considered someone mailing payment.  I was nice and polite to the person, but honestly could not figure out how he wanted to pay.  Not sure why I never thought of mailing it in. I feel kind of stupid now.

I personally use Stripe and Paypal to keep peoples options open. Hell my site even accepts Bitcoin and over 70+ "Alt-coins" for payment methods.

What is Stripe?  I am fairly sure his thing was wanting to use the mail, not online or over the phone, but I really would like to provide another option than Paypal.  For what ever reason, some folk think you have to have a paypal account to use it.  I think of them as just another credit card processor.  That and I absolutely love that I can import into quick books.  If I only use the paypal account to buy business related things, then it makes book keeping so damn easy.

I found it after I asked.  There is a free plugin for woocommerce that facilitates it.  There is an $80.00 plug in for Square that facilitates it.  The cost is because the square one does a whole bunch of stuff I dont care about.  Thing is, already set up with square.  So thinking on it.

What I dont understand is why some customers hate Paypal.  As a customer, I love it.  As a seller, I understand they take money away for the slightest reason.  I would imagine that would give the customer lots of assurances.  That and for my business account, I had to send to them copies of a bunch of documents, verify my bank account, verify my address.  Again, I would imagine that would cause confidence in the consumer.

You will always have people that don't like PayPal for whatever reason. Some of it happened around the time eBay bought them with people that disagree with eBay. Or people that had issues with peer-to-peer money transfers etc. As you stated the funny part is you don't even need a PayPal account you can literally check out with credit or debit. But with PayPal unlike other processors you actually know who the processor is so some people boycott. You can either use another processor as a supplement or just stick to your guns.

Why, as a customer, do I not use PayPal?

2004, I got a PayPal account, used it, they screwed up the transaction, got nasty email from the vendor, order was cancelled.

So, I contacted them and told them I would not be needing their services, and to cancel my account.

They said they cancelled it, but about four years later, out of the blue, I get an email from PayPal about my account. And yes, I called them and it was not a scam.

Apparently, they had never canceled my account, and had had access to my bank account the whole time. My fault for not verifying the account was closed? Perhaps, but they should have done what they said they would do.

So, I should trust a company that failed me twice?

Actually, three times. You how they take $1.99 from your account to make sure transactions go through, and then are supposed to deposit the $1.99 back? To this day, they have never given back the $1.99. Not that I am worried about two bucks, it is the principle.

That is why I disdain PayPal.

Alkhall, paypal no longer insists you have an account.  You just use the card like any other processor.  Difference being you know who the processor is ahead of time.  I do agree, that having an account can be a pain the rear.  But for the purchaser, my experience is it is great.  I used to do a lot of purchases on ebay.  Mainly tools.  Often not as described.  Ebay and Paypal are great for giving the buyer piece of mind.

Hot Pepper, not sure when but yes am going to add another processor.  I want to provide a phone number so folk can call orders in, but land would be really expensive because it is not run yet.  Cell phones work if you stand by the window on one foot with your left hand over your head holding your right foot.  Oh, and the window has to be open, no clouds, and you have to grin just right.  I think it has something to do with the fillings in your teeth.  Oddly, while voice on cell phone is hit or miss data is perfect.
