Huge Pet Peeve Rant

Yeah I actually noticed the other day too that Publix in Florida is selling fresnos as "Red Chili" ahaha. Also there is a huge Latin/Caribbean grocery store called Bravo and they only sell basic green jalapeno and Serrano.

And thats exactly who I am talking about, and yes their Fresnos are marked as red chili lol
 
The grocery store scotch bonnet thing is old news. Watch many a cooking show, even jerk restaurants, saying "Our secret ingredient is the scotch bonnet pepper" and they show a pile of habs.

Truth! It wouldnt be bad if these habs were in decent shape... bruised, many were soft and almost translucent. Selling for almost 7 a pound.

The translucent, orange, and typically rotten hab for $8/pound is a staple at plenty of supermarkets up here.
 
The orange habs at our local Fresh Thyme markets are freakishly hot. Ive looked them over several times to see if it was just a fluke and compared it to the Spartacus hybrid. I would swear that is what they are.
 
They are not your typical orange habs at the normal large grocery stores.

True story: I sliced a few of them in half to make an infused vinegar (sorry Warrantman). Forgot to wash the cutting board and the knife. Couple hours later, my girlfriend was trying to give our 2yo a snack but the kid was going apeshit. I hear my gf coming up the stairs gagging and gasping saying "try this". My first thought was.. whatever "this" is, no thanks! Then she walks into the room with a slice of apple, and I remember the cutting board and the knife, and think.... OH SHIT. 
 
Well no one died but lets just say those things pack some heat.

I', just a few miles north of you...our safeway has them as well/  they also had 3-4 other super hots and large yellow monzanos.
 
Next time i'm in I will pick up a couple of those monzanos and try germ the seeds.
 
Really interested in the "Red chili" ref on stuff sold by P%blix.  I bought a bunch and sauced it out as it was sold as a "red chili".  After then reading up on this and other sources, I have no idea what that pepper is that they sell.   Worked fine on a sauce, great  results plus the seeds grow prolifically.  Now you have me all freaked out as to what this is, because I have a dozen plants up an rolling, but, it matters not.  It will be a chili in the backyard (with all the other weird stuff).

Iknow exactly what you mean, When I go there all the red "scotch bonnets" look just like a habanero and I planted a few and they grew quick. But the other red pepper there is probably a fresno
 
They (that grocery chain) still label the Habaneros as such, green or orange, but it is winter so I don't suspect they are getting anything locally, and they look rather puny.
 
The Jalepenos and "red chilis" are also imported.
