From someone I know who has had a lot more dealings with growing hydro vegetables than me (this is my first season growing hydro) is that he thinks the taste (especially chilli) is better in soil than in hydro, but if you are growing for seed stock then hydro is the way to go.
Three popular types,
Deep Water Culture (DWC), basically a bucket full of water with an airpump.
Aeroponic, spray water from a reservoir into the roots which hang in air.
Flood and Drain, pumps water to flood a second chamber and then fall back down via gravity.
Listed in order of complexity and initial start up costs, with DWC being the cheapest and easiest, and F&D the hardest and most expensive. But ironically, from the Pot growing forums (Which are your greatest resource when it comes to Hydroponics - google "marijuana forum"), it is also the same list as in terms of productivity, ie, F&D is the most successful.
I have two of those hydro types, F&D and DWC setup, but I am having a few problems with the F&D due to it leaking a good 50 litres out of a loose hose fitting which I am not happy about, but serves me right for not building it right to begin with (using the wrong glue) ... I will fix it sometime this week.
The internet is the best place to get knowledge, or I can build your systems for you. But really, the Pot forums are great, you can also google "Overgrow FAQ" and read that taken from the old overgrow forums (which were the best place ever before they got raided) and contains so much knowledge about everything, from lights, pumps, hydro to cutting clones etc.
Btw, if you like before you buy anything I can take a look at it. I don't trust many hydrostores in Perth as they gave me some bad advice and cost me a few quid.
