I have yet another newbie question...

I hope this doesn't sound too ridiculous, but I must proceed because I am fearing the worst. While checking my plants today, I noticed one of my Serrano plants seem to have the "goose bumps/pimples" all over the leaves. I touched the leaves to check the feel, and the top and bottom of the leaves were rough because of these bumps. I can imagine that everyone with any kind of experience probably thinks I'm silly, but I'm being serious. Is this plant in jeopardy? Is it infectious? This isn't the early stages of aphids is it??? OR Is this just natural?

First, check the underside. This is common in other bushes but have never seen it on a pepper plant. It IS a problem but I can't remember if it was due to virus or bug....I think it was a bug.

I'm not glad to hear that this IS a problem, but I'm also glad to see that I wasn't overreacting. I did check the underside of the leaves and they looked and felt the same as the tops. I would have posted pictures but did not have time before work. Do you think that I should sacrifice this one plant for the greater good of the rest of them?

Paul

I would isolate it for now but if my memory serves me correct (which it never does)............what was i talking about.....Oh yea I think I read on a post somewhere that if a plant takes up to much water it reacts in that matter. I think it was an old post by Pam but I could be wrong. Someone here will know what I am talking about.

Dale,
I hope you're right with the water thing. I have been searching some AWFUL University sites listing ALL of the diseases common to peppers. http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/clinic/indexa.html Now, I'm starting to freak...It's a natural tendency of mine to overreact. After, all of my reading, I don't think its aphids because I don't see any...LOL However, I am also growing tomatoes in the same area and read on one of the sites that peppers and tomatoes shouldn't be planted near each other. So...Now I'm wondering if maybe my tomatoes gave my peppers something. By the way, my tomatoes were started way too early and I think suffering from root bound, but there isn't room to allow them to stretch out any more than their 6" pots. I just hope they make it to the ground. (I'm not too worried though because they can be replaced at the local nursery). Sorry for rambling, this post is about my peppers...

Here are some pictures...

This is my "Infected Serrano pepper" hope this helps explain what I got.

Thanks for everyones help...Yes, I'm stressing..............

I first thought Aphids, it looks like it's caught something. Have you tried wiping the leaves with a damp tissue to see what comes off? Whatever though I'd isolate it A.S.A.P

It does look like it caught something. It kind of looks like I do when I get poison ivy...LOL I did try rubbing the leaves between my fingers and found that these bumps are kind of hard and do not move or come off. After doing some research, I stumbled upon edema, the blistering of the cell walls of the leaves due to over watering. Does anyone think that this looks like it??? The only problem that I have with this theory is that I only water when the cups that they are in are really light and bottom feed. I also give all of my plants the same amount of water and time to "drink" and so far this is the only plant out of 74 with this problem.

Could be...

Bacterial leaf blight of tomato and pepper

Infected pepper leaf has small, circular pale-green raised spots. Eventually, the spots become chocolate-brown with a paler-brown center on the lower leaf surface. During severe infestation, the plant drops most of its leaves leaving its fruits exposed to direct sunlight. Infected fruit has circular green spots. As the bacteria progresses, the spots turn dark-brown to black and with raised, cracked, scabby surfaces.

Hmmm...this is a new one on me.

Googling doesn't turn up much, but I did read that Magnesium deficiency can look a bit like that in other plants, like potatoes or tomatoes, but not all the sites described it that way. You might try spraying the leaves with a mix of one tablespoon of epsom salts in a gallon of water once every two weeks and see if you get any improvement.

The only other suggestion I can make is, if you're in the US, to contact your local extension office and email them the picture.

Sorry I'm late.
Throw it in the fire. That's the worst thing I've ever seen. AJ is right. But even if he isn't. Pour gas on it and let it burn! No, this might infect the air. Wear gloves and trash the gloves.
It's freakin me out!

Thanks for everyone's comments so far. Now my stubborn streak (obsession side) is kicking in and I have to figure out what the heck is going on with this plant. I was just going to throw it out because I have 11 more Serrano plants that are doing fine, so far, but no I'm on a mission. I'll keep y'all posted if I find anything out. :(

Paul

muda...if you have 11 other healthy serranos, I would not take a chance on it being some kind of bacterial or even viral infection of the plant...if it is, the longer you keep it around, the more it will spread...I hope you definitely have it isolated and even with that...you will have to make sure you sanitize everything that comes in contact with that plant before coming in contact with your healthy plants....your hands mainly...

you probably need to treat this plant like we used to treat TB patients...isolation, isolation, isolation..

Don't be a fool. isolate it.
I had a "problem" with just one of my plants, and BAM! all the crop was gone.

Omri...that is what I am remembering...you losing your whole crop...and exactly why I said isolation and am leaning more toward destruction...JMO

Well, I just got off the phone with OSU's Extension office and they requested photos. I have sent them to the plant "Doctors" and even offered to sacrifice this plant to science if need be... LOL....Yes, I have it isolated and am leaning towards throwing it out (as far away from my house as possible) I too was thinking of Omri's loss. But, like I said I'm on a mission now..........

OH, I forgot to mention that while talking on the phone, she suggested the possibility that this could just be as simple as a genetic defect with this one seed??????? Seems highly improbable that one seed out of a whole pack would be a defect, plus coming from a reputable company like Burpee. But, I guess anything is possible

AHHHGGG!!! New Development.........Now I have 12 plants with varying degrees of these bumps (pimples)..........2 more Serrano (3 total), 2 Mariachi, 2 Hungarian Hots, (for my wife) 4 Burpee False Alarm, and 1 unknown pepper plant from Burpee pepper mix which I think is a Jalapeno. Incidentally these all came from Burpee and I can not describe what I'm feeling without censorship. All of the plants look healthy UNTIL you get closer....
I have now sent pictures to the NMSU Pepper Institute for examination.

I apologize for my tirade and hope no one minds me putting all of these pictures out here. I'm just feeling a little desprete...........

Uh oh... All our vegetable seeds are Burpee, and I have some seeds coming from Burpee right now... I'm ascared to plant them now!
