chinense Jays peach ghost scorpion types

When I look at pics of the above pepper on various websites I notice two distinct forms:

1st form they look like a peach ghost, long narrow and tapering with bumps all over.

2nd form is like an oversized reaper with fat gnarly sides and a skinny tail sticking out (this is the one I like).

Why is this? Are their different strains or could it just be growing conditions?
 
Its probably still not completely stable as I don't think the strain is very old yet.  Here is how mine looked, and they were great this year.

I like the way yours look. Where did you get your seeds?

I have a seedling I germinated from seeds I bought from rahiseedbank so I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

If it's unstable then there could be differences not only in appearance but taste and heat also.. It's a shame peppers are not stabilised before released
 
Yeah, JPGS should look like jcw10c's post.  If they look like the peppers in the first link you posted, then its either a regression to a parental type, a cross, a mutation, or something else being passed off as JPGS.  Ive acquired my seeds from refining fire chilis, and they have always grown true (in the first generation)...(in the second generation I have had several phenotypes show up, only some of which grew true, because this is an unstable cross.)
I wish I had taken more pictures, because Ive had some wicked ones..

Sav, you touched on something important that I think sometimes gets overlooked, especially by people who are new. I know it was the case with me, anyway. There's always a lot of talk about genetics in the community (and hey, there should be), but I think it's important not to overlook other factors that can come into play. I've got a Brainstrain plant in the front yard. It's one of the plants I grew out from seed I got from Cappy.

Earlier in the season, the pods were remarkably uniform. Now, I'm seeing a lot more variation:








As you can tell by the leaves, our season has been less than cooperative so far. Unseasonably warm, and nonstop rain. Nute deficiencies. Loads of variation.

That said, I think it's probably a combination of factors, including genetics, that's coming into play.

I forgot to mention that the peppers from the first link could also be legitimate JPGSs...but they are just undesirable phenotypes... I just looked back through my own pictures and saw some that looked like the first link.  The phenotype you want will look like jcw10c's, Wicked Mike's, my own, and your second link.

Wicked Mike you say you had a bad season but your plants look massive and still have plenty of pods (despite the curly leaves). Thanks for the pepper porn. Interesting point you bring up about consistency in pepper shapes throughout the season..

PexPeppers that's cool you got to meet Jay it's good to put a face to a name. Do you know if he's still working on this pepper and releasing seeds? I would love to be able to purchase his latest/presumably most stable generation.

The latest information I got from him is that he was having them SHU tested. From what I remember the peaches were hotter than the reds for some reason
 
It seems like the JPGS either looks more like a scorpion (bulbous with a long tail), or more like a really blistered ghost pepper with a tail. The ones I grew this year had the more ghost looking pheno. These are definitely some of my favorite super hots, great flavor fresh, dried, or smoked. I'd be down to trade seeds with someone that has the more scorpion looking pheno though.

All of mine looked just like this.

I had one plant from Jim Duffy from a plug sale he had.  His were notably different than my other 2.  They ripened a litle darker but were much thicker walled.  Overall roughly similar shapes, but the bumps on these were more rounded and not as sharp as the ones above.  Both strains were great though.

My yellow brain strain did similar to yours this year.  Pods changed throughout the year.  First 3 or 4 pods looked like plain 7 pot yellow or even a yellow habanero.  Then the next 20 or 30 pods were perfect phenos, brainy and perfect shape.  Then after that for most of the final big set, they were still perfect overall shape, but most of the brain texture was gone and were fairly smooth. My first set of JPGS were also not quite as gnarly as the pics I posted which were from the second setting of pods.
 
Second set of pods were really brainy.

My first wave of pods looked a little more like yours.

yes a excellent powder ! one of my top favorites , glad they grew true for you , exactly how mine were . don't see to many around like em ' 
 
Great pepper, but man oh man do they sneak up on you. Peach/Yellow peppers should not hurt like this one does.

One of the nastiest burns and gut bombs I've ever experienced.
