Jubnat's 2017 grow log

So, this is really my first year focusing just on growing peppers. And I figured I'd push it a little over the limit...you know, just so I can see where my limit really is.
This is also my first time starting seeds indoors, so I'm figuring out all the problems that go along with that. I bought a couple cheap LEDs from Amazon. They seem to be working out alright, not ideal, but not bad.

I'll be planting most of these in the ground(hopefully), in a couple of different garden beds. And whatever doesn't fit will be going in pots, and I'm trying out a few of those fabric pots for the first time. I might build a little raised bed if I get time in the next couple of weeks.

Anyway...this is the first round that was started on 1/15/17. Some came up in a week or so, some took a month, and a few never germinated at all.

And then there are other seeds that I didn't have room for, so I gave them to friends. So hopefully I'll be able to get some pods from them and see how their plants do for future grows.

So...I'm pretty f**king excited with my new obsession!

And I can't say enough about the generosity of everyone here. From buying fresh pods and seeds, to participating in my first seed train, to being gifted seeds out of the blue, it's been pretty awesome so far!

Oh, and I'll get some pics up here sometime soon. Hopefully when they're moving outside...just waiting for this crazy weather to settle down.

So, I got a little work done in the garden the last few days.  We were supposed to have a really terrible storm come through this past Sunday...but it ended up not being too bad, at least where I am.  A lot of wind, and some rain, but it all dumped down at once,  and then it was done.
So I had made sure everything in the garden was staked, and pulled all the containers under cover, just to put them all back out the next day.

Here's a semi-blurry pic of my Lemon Drop.  It's got a few small pods, and a bunch of flowers.
This guy was actually planted last fall sometime(don't really remember when).  I planted this and a ground cherry from seed, not sure why, I guess the weather was hot and I was bored.  The ground cherry actually started fruiting during the winter, but then we had a bit of a freeze in February, and they both died back.  But, now they're back in business.

Here's my Wild Brazil.  I'm really looking forward to this one,  It's still small, but it started bushing out right from the start.  Decided he deserved a tomato cage.  Really nice structure to this one.  And it's putting out a lot of flower buds already.  (Should I pinch them, or just let the plant decide to drop them or pollinate?)

I've also been having a little problem with something eating my leaves.  A few small ones got cut back to the ground, but they're coming back anyway.  I'm not sure if it's something I should really worry about, or just let the plants grow out of it.  They seem to be growing faster than the pests can eat them at least.

Here's an unlucky Carbonero.  He should be fine, though...I believe in him.
zOK51Za.jpg

This Aji Mochero got hit hard early on, and lost a few limbs.  It's strange when the bugs seem to really prefer certain plants.
15naqGd.jpg

Forgot to get a pic of the King BOC,  It's got holes in nearly every leaf, still looks fine for now, though.
But here's the only thing I've caught red-handed on the plants...
0Tgq57i.jpg

What is it exactly, and what should I do, if anything?

And I happened to notice this thing crawling around my ground cherry, I'm not sure what it is, and if I should kill it or leave it be.

Oh, and I need to get an updated pic of this one, or two.  This was probably taken a month or two ago, and the plants are now in their own pots.  I wish you could tag users on here.  But these are seeds I got in a seed train, originally from Hybrid Mode.  They are Elysium Oxide off pheno.  I assume these are F2, if the seeds were saved from pods that were supposed to be Elysium Oxide, but ended up being crossed.
I had two seeds sprout, so I'll definitely grow them both out, to see what comes of this.  Is anyone else growing these this year?  What are your plants looking like?  Seems like a nice experiment because I got one green, and one purple.

Anyway, I'll keep y'all updated.  And, hybrid mode, if you read this, and want some seeds if anything good comes from them, I'll be happy to send some your way.

Your plants look really nice and healthy.

Wish my lemon drops were the first to flower. Probably one of the best peppers ever.

Wow you have a great collection! How do you like the grow bags? I debated getting some but ended up getting some 2.5 gallon nursery pots.
Thanks!

So far so good with the grow bags, and by that I mean I like that they have handles. Hah!

But, I haven't really had the plants in any of the containers long enough to really see the difference yet. I wanted to try a mix, with multiple species in the bags and in regular nursery pots, just in case I notice any preferences for one over the other.

If you're curious about them, you should get one to try out. And if you like the results you can upgrade for next season, and if not, it's just the cost of one fabric pot.

And I got the 7 gallon fabric pots, but I have a long growing season down here.

Thanks, man! Really excited about the lemon drops, as I've never even tasted one yet. And I'm looking forward to sharing them with friends who won't even try any of the superhots. Maybe they'll be a 'gateway drug' for 'em!

Either that or your friends will just wait until your lemon drops are ready then shoot you whilst running away laughing manically with a crudely hacked lemon drop plant in their hands.

you can't have just one lemon drop you have to have them all.

They're that good.

Dewd, you has some nazty lookin' bugs down there!

One of the critters I don't miss from my years in AZ was the sun spiders. Spooky bastiges that I don't think even bite, but they're ugly enough for your arms to go all a kilter when you see 'em.

Nice grow,

And if I remember correctly, you WILL love the lemon drops...

Trying to figure out what I actually have growing now, and get it on paper...it's hard to keep track of it all in my head.

Everything is chugging along, slow and steady, for the most part.  Some are just getting settled in their pots/plots, and just starting to show signs of some real growth.  Some are starting to put out lots of flowers and a few pods.  A few are still babies at this point, but they have a long season ahead of them.  I got a few pictures before the rain this morning...I'll try to get them up later today.

Also, my mom was going through some things at my grandfather's house, and found a couple of containers of saved pepper seeds...from 1986.  I'm going to try to germinate them just for the hell of it, we'll see if anything comes of it.

Can't help with the caterpillar, but based on the second bugs back legs I'd say that's leaf footed bug nymphs. Those things have been horrific for me in the past.

And I just found this little guy, I think it's a 2 or 3 year old 7-Pot red volunteer...died back this past February, but popped right back up.  It's funny to see a pod on it, the plant is only a few inches tall.  I'm just gonna let it do it's thing...

Wow ! nice flower :)

Yeah, Passionflower/passionfruit.  They call the fruit Maypop around here.

Hopefully I'll be able to harvest some this year.  First year in the ground they barely grew at all, next year, the vines were popping up everywhere, but no flowers, then last year, got a bunch of flowers and a few to fruit, but we had a crazy amount of rain that knocked them down...so I'm hoping this year is the one.
The flavor is amazing!

Is the Wild Brazil the "Vrubu" variety? How does it go, growing-wise and eating-wise?
I haven't heard of the Vrubu. As far as I know, it's just called Wild Brazil(I know, seems a little confusing).
I picked it up in a seeds train, so I don't remember the source.

I can't comment on the flavor, I've yet to get a ripe one. But it's so tempting, I almost tried a green one yesterday. I've only heard good things about the flavor, though.

As far as growth, this thing is bushy as hell. Looking forward to see how it develops as the season goes on. But no need to top this plant, lanky and bare are not in its vocabulary

Wicked plants!
The true bugs are sucking your plants. Won't kill them, but you have to assume its bad for productivity.
The worm... struck fear directly into my heart. I hope your neem oil did the trick.

Yeah, those worms/caterpillars are a pain, they never seem to go away, but they aren't doing too much damage these days.  Luckily the aphids are pretty much gone for now, and I even stopped spraying neem.  I've seen more parasitic wasps(I think that's what they are, small, and kinda look like flies) lately, so I'm letting them take over.  So, I've noticed a few dead aphids sitting on the plants here and there.  I've been reading about planting more herbs and other plants with small flowers...apparently some are too small for bees to bother with, so the wasps like them...and then they kill your aphids while they are hanging around.

I've spent most of the afternoon building a potting bench/work table.  Just did a quick sketch, bought some wood, and I'm just kind of freestyling it.  Making a few small mistakes, but it's gonna be good!

Got one big pod on my Large Orange Thai...looks pretty different from the ones on whitehotpeppers' site, but it is the first pod after all, so I can't really judge it yet.
