KingLeerUK's 2013 (first!) Glog - get these plants outside, stat!

Welcome to my first Glog for THP!  I did get a rather uneven and late start for growing this year but thankfully the season can run quite long in Florida so I still expect to have a good harvest.

Unlike last year, my grow has been done in fits and starts due to other competing activities for my time and some seed quality issues.  I've also done a few upgrades to my growing setup and I have some ongoing retrofit to my outdoor area that haven't even gotten started.  This post will serve as a quick catch up on 2013 so far, and hint at plans for the remainder of the year.

So, for the past 2 years I've done only very small chili grows for personal consumption and the occasional party salsa.  My growing setup was pretty simple, a DIY frame made out of schedule 40 1.25" PVC piping, some eye bolts and two T12 fluorescent fixtures as follows:

This year having made the decision to go a fair bit bigger both in quantity and in grow list entries, I cut down the original configuration and rebuilt it as follows:

This setup gives me bi-level growing area, with a pair of dual T8 lights for the top and the space to add an optional 3rd fixture on both levels if I need the extra lumens.

Here are a few detail images of the construction for anyone interested.

And now... for an outside update!

In the past there have been discussions on these forums about the ripening stages for a Bhut Jolokia (red).  Here I have some photographic proof that at least for my plants the progression is yellow > orange > red.  Here are some yellow pods down front on the plant.

Note the orange pod right next to the fully-ripe red pod.

One of my new bhut jolokia reds is expressing differently than its brothers.  The seeds for both of these plants came from the same pod this past spring but for some reason it is growing in a very stunted manner.  The leaves are a deep, rich green and have a much more crumpled appearance.  The plant itself is healthy and is being given the exact same care and sun exposure as its neighbours.  I've checked the plant for disease or pests and there don't appear to be any.  Possible mutation?

The single Trinidad Moruga Scorpion that survived the Round 1 plantings is podding up vigorously.  Tons of flowers and tiny pods all over the plant, easily 50+

On the other end of the spectrum... nearly all of my tomatoes have died due to excessive rain and brown spot fungus.  I've pulled 3/4 of them out of the garden and the few that are left I don't have the greatest confidence in.  The red cayenne and tabasco are certainly living it up though!

Like a radioactive monster from the sea, my okra plants are taking over!

These Godzilla plants are over 5' tall and produce 8-12 pods A DAY now.  The inset pic above is the harvest is a single day harvest!

Coming this weekend...
 - AACT tea brewing (Amazon delivery didn't get here in time for last weekend)

With the holiday weekend I'm finally getting a fair bit done outside.

I gave everything about 2 hours of hardening off today and even managed to get 8 of the Trinidad Moruga Scorpions in the ground out front in a new bed.

I also got a nice pic of the first Scorpion pod on the Round 1 plant.

The "new" Bhut Jolokia Reds are also putting on pods.

But not to be outdone, my existing bhuts are putting on quite a showing of pods.

As promised, I'm dipping my toe into AACT brewing for the first time.

Bits and pieces.

The mix:
4 cups of organic worm castings
2 big handfuls of freshly cut grass clippings
2 Tbsp of mycorrhizae granules
about 3 Tbsp of unsulphured molasses
5 gallon bucket of de-chlorinated water

Got the bubble action happening.

And here we are at six hours of brewing.

At the time of this writing I'm about 30 hours into the brew.

I was finally able to get an accurate count of my current set of 6" potted plants:
7 Devil's Tongue
3 Yellow Scotch Bonnet
4 Douglah
4 Carolina Reaper 4
2 Chocolate Scorpion
9 Red Cayenne
4 Cowhorn
11 Purple Jalapeno
12 Habanero
15 Kung Pao
30 Trinidad Moruga Scorpion

This is after a few friends and family giveaways and the some goodwill packages provided to other THP members locally.  I'm probably only going to have room for about 60% of this in-ground or in 5 gallon buckets so if you are in the Central Florida area and would like some free plants, send me a PM!
