Mattys first ever Glog "Into the fire" 2019 season

Hello everyone and thanks for looking at my "Into the Fire" Glog!!

So I started my gardening hobby in my early 20's about 16 years ago now, and though I have played around with many types of flowers/vegis  tomato's is what most of my energy was put into. I loved alll the different colors and types that could be grown which really reminds me of all the exciting Chilli variety's that exist today. A couple seasons ago while looking for some info on a particular type of sweet pepper I stumbled onto a few videos of some people eating super hots (Ghost,Reapers ect..).  After looking into it a little more I figured this would be a very interesting thing to grow even just as a novelty since really no one in my area grows much if anything at all.

Last Winter I went and bought some seeds from Ebay..one was a mixed bag Ghost/Reaper/Scorpion...another was the Peter Pepper and the third was some type of Thai i believe. Only the Thai ended up growing true to type and the other 2 was a Cayenne and Ornamental. I was pretty disappointed when they did finally start putting out pods. It was around that time I started looking for a group or forum dedicated to Chillis, and luck would have it I found THP and all of you fantastic peoples.

Anyways with the boring back story outta the way I really planned ahead for this years grow....I built a 6'Hx6'Lx2'D grow box (not exact mesurments) which has 3 shelves and the middle one able to come out if I wnated to grow larger plants from the bottom tier. I went overkill on seed types making 3 decent size buys, 2 of which were 30+ from Garth at TexasHotPeppers and a smaller one from a fella in Arz.

I do not plan to grow all of these as my wife would kill me, but 20 or so might not be so bad.

So would like to see some favorites and suggestions from the fine people here at THP so I can kinda get it down to a much much smaller grow list. Will also get some pics up shortly here of my grow box which still has one more shelf I need to wire up just waiting on a few more strip lights to arrive in the mail, but will still give an idea of what it will all look like when its done.

In final: This is a new hobby for me within the hobby I already enjoy...I am going to try some new things (new for me) and even the much earlier starts then normal will be interesting to see how it all comes out at the end.  I look forward to the input from the community and keeping this glog updated as much as I can.

Here is too success in 2019!!

CHEERS!

Matty

Couple pics of the middle shelf today since I have to take it all out to water. Getting a better idea of how long I can push it without stressing them too much I think now.

And thought I would take a solo of this 'Bad Brains' since it is really taking off the past week or two. Pic kinda blurred on me abit but still get an idea of the size on it.

Plants are looking great ! Those planters are obviously working very well.

Thanks Guys!!

Some look better then others of course, but I think as long as the plant has a solid set of roots and are some what healthy at plant out the ugly ducklings will hopefully find their stride in the outdoors.

You know I bought aboot 40 or so 2L pots (round) back in December but figured since I was obviously out of space I would use up all the silly cartons and cups I had collected, not a single one has been used yet   .

The milk cartons work very well if they have ample air flow around them and into the media, so poking holes up and down (Thanks Andy) has helped a ton in pulling back any edema signs I was starting to see. The one thing I really like though, was the 1L yogurt containers which I just drilled drainage holes in the bottom......Damn near the exact same size as the 1L pots I have from a bunch of plants I bought last year for .25c in mid July. I literally just bought the plants for the pots......Got a bunch of 1Gs and a few 2L  square pots as well. If I can time it right I will try and concentrate on the square ones for next season since they are a great fit and good size for the shelf.

I did top a few more plants last night, and finally got a bunch of the sweet pepper types into larger plant cells. Today I will try and get the maters sorted out abit better and split  into small single pots for now.

Going to have abit of both Bry....The types I REALLY want to make sure I get a solid yeild from I will put into 5G and 10G buckets I have so I can move into the hoop house in the fall.....The others I will play around with my fabric pots and have some in the ground. Ideally I would love to have it all in large containers but the cost of soil is just too much to put out all at once, so its something I will have to build up over a couple years and reuse some media if I can.

Going to try a bunch of Bells and mini bells in some 3G fabric pots to free up abit of the raised beds for the extra maters this year. The previous owner had a large garden but has been grown in for at least 7-8 years by the looks of it. The soil is pretty rich still but will take a bunch of work to till itand go through with a shovel to make it suitable to grow in again.  I dug out maybe a 8ftx3ft section of it last year and grew some maters in it, it was all done by shovel and took me a few days just to do t hat much. I think is around another 20ftx12-15ft I couls use once its done if I needed it, just need to kindly ask a friend of mine to use his tiller for a few days though.

I also have 4 older kids swimming pools that work very well, they are not the prettiest things so I don't set them out on display that's for sure, but they certainly do the job.

To my way of thinking any container 10 gallon or
above is basically like growing in the ground. I
never replace the soil, just remove a bit and amend
with desired stuff in the Spring. I try not to disturb
the layers of soil besides transplanting and keeping

the top worked up a bit.
Good luck getting the garden space all tilled up.
That is a real back-breaker, but once you get it
done, you will be so happy. As long as you're
basically starting from scratch, double dig it,
and try to get a biodynamic raised bed going
once you have the top worked up a bit.

Good idea with the containers for moving into
greenhouse in the fall. I'm doing the same thing
except with 3-gallon containers. I'm shooting
for 10-15 of those which is all that will fit in the
greenhouse.

Aye the bit that got dug up last year I raised it up aboot 8 inches or so above ground level, more so since there was some flooding issues with the soil being so compact around it for so long.

I did pput in 4 other raised beds last year but they aren't anything fancy just some 8ft 2''x8''s screwed together. Its literally going to take years to build back what I had at my old place, which I did not realize how much I missed till it was gone.

One thing that is nice aboot living here is I am able to harvest my own peat moss, which once the snow melts I will take some pictures of a few piles I have ready to rock for this year. It will really go a long wya in the garden that needs to be tilled and shave some money off I can use elsewhere.

Right and I also considered using those for this year if I did not have enough buckets ect, but I should be fine I hope in that regard. Could even get the 56l cheap ones from Walmart for like $5, my dad used to use them to plant potatos in alot.

Speaking of that actually I forgot Santa brought me a PVC Tater planter so will see how it works out. Never had great luck with taters I always end up getting slammed by the potato bugs the couple times I grew them and jsut gave up. I will give it another go this year and maybe keep the planter farther out in the field or something.

That's as down home as it gets!

I've seen others use those kiddy
pools. they make great planters!

Another cheap alternative are the
utility tubs sold in most stores for
less than $10. They are around
17-18 gallon size.

saiias 2019 uses laundry baskets
with garbage sacks in them. Another
great idea!

I didn't see it at first but to the laundry basket idea...I will play around with some DIY fabric pots this year..so build a few frames and staple weed fabric...use some milk crates and do the same but also I was thinking about cheap laundry baskets since they have lots of air flow and just need minimal fabric on the inside could give the same effect

Yeah I remember seeing that one it is a good idea eh. I was going to use the hamper as a frame for the weed fabric to basically use like a fabric pot. Just a more stable version of it with really solid handles.
