Mattys first ever Glog "Into the fire" 2019 season

Hello everyone and thanks for looking at my "Into the Fire" Glog!!
 
So I started my gardening hobby in my early 20's about 16 years ago now, and though I have played around with many types of flowers/vegis  tomato's is what most of my energy was put into. I loved alll the different colors and types that could be grown which really reminds me of all the exciting Chilli variety's that exist today. A couple seasons ago while looking for some info on a particular type of sweet pepper I stumbled onto a few videos of some people eating super hots (Ghost,Reapers ect..).  After looking into it a little more I figured this would be a very interesting thing to grow even just as a novelty since really no one in my area grows much if anything at all.
 
Last Winter I went and bought some seeds from Ebay..one was a mixed bag Ghost/Reaper/Scorpion...another was the Peter Pepper and the third was some type of Thai i believe. Only the Thai ended up growing true to type and the other 2 was a Cayenne and Ornamental. I was pretty disappointed when they did finally start putting out pods. It was around that time I started looking for a group or forum dedicated to Chillis, and luck would have it I found THP and all of you fantastic peoples.
 
Anyways with the boring back story outta the way I really planned ahead for this years grow....I built a 6'Hx6'Lx2'D grow box (not exact mesurments) which has 3 shelves and the middle one able to come out if I wnated to grow larger plants from the bottom tier. I went overkill on seed types making 3 decent size buys, 2 of which were 30+ from Garth at TexasHotPeppers and a smaller one from a fella in Arz.
 
I do not plan to grow all of these as my wife would kill me, but 20 or so might not be so bad.

So would like to see some favorites and suggestions from the fine people here at THP so I can kinda get it down to a much much smaller grow list. Will also get some pics up shortly here of my grow box which still has one more shelf I need to wire up just waiting on a few more strip lights to arrive in the mail, but will still give an idea of what it will all look like when its done.
 
In final: This is a new hobby for me within the hobby I already enjoy...I am going to try some new things (new for me) and even the much earlier starts then normal will be interesting to see how it all comes out at the end.  I look forward to the input from the community and keeping this glog updated as much as I can.

That's a ton of space to use - totally awesome! - but also a lot of space to keep warm overnight.  I do the 1g milk jugs (that's just aboot 4 liters ;)) for thermal mass against overnight lows, but my HH's are 10 foot x 5 foot low tunnels. It would take an army of those to keep yours warm!

The jugs are full you mean Red? Water or other liquids I mean.
 
I am not even joking aboot this but I literally have like 200+ milk jugs that size.
 
We normally would wait and take all our jugs back once a year since the kid have been little and use the deposit money for whatever or a toy ect. So I would always try and make sure they went back before the winter, so last fall as we took in a huge load there was a sign up saying they no longer took jugs back and have changed to a different distributor.
 
All the new jugs are recyclable only, and since we live out in the country we do not have garbage pick up and burn everything. I thought it was a waste to burn the jugs and thought I could use them for starter pots or something and not waste the damn things.

The ground it sits on is partially gravel and the otehr half sits on cement which can absorb a good amount of heat as well. I have not gone out of my way to add much else to it since it got pretty full of plants which put off some heat/humidity as well. Would be easy enough to rolla 45 plastic drum inside that I have a few of and fill it with some water.
 
I only had it get cold liek that a couple times on me where I had left the plants in the greenhouse overnight Dee, but I was running just a stand up oil heater and only had it on half power so 700ws or so and it was pretty toasty inside. I always worry aboot the heater shutting off or something during the night and then the plants get death by chill. But it does hold the warmth pretty good esp with a heat source in it, and not opening the doors constantly of course.

Yep, I fill 'em with water and line them up along the front and back wall lengthwise and even space several in and around the plants. Probably had 2 dozen in each HH at the peak. Will easily keep me a solid 5/6c above ambient measured at dawn - I measured several times last year.
 
Painting them black will make them significantly warmer - it's VERY noticeable when I compared pouring black versus clear/white water onto my hand during the heat of the day, but, well, spray painting 50 jugs...  I even store my 5g watering buckets just inside the door for the dual effect of keeping the HH warm and having warmer, dechlorinated water to water with.
 
Awesome info guys, thanks for sharing your experiences! If I manage to convince my better half to get a greenhouse this year, I will for sure add a couple of water containers during the early and late season months in case of a freak freeze in the middle of the night. I also heard some people putting e.g. tea lights in there etc, but I wonder how much that would really help given the size of the room you're trying to keep warm(ish).

It's amazing how those space heaters will keep
things warm in the greenhouse. Mine is certainly 
not air-tight, but is 6mm double pane polycarbonate.
 
I hate depending on it though, for the reasons you said.

That's what I do, too. I'm fanatical about rinsing away the soap and end up standing there filling and swirling and pouring for ten minutes. 
 
We buy our water in small bottles.  It's only ever milk that comes through here in those gallon jugs.  Thanks!  Didn't occur to me to just buy the damn jugs clean.  And they're.. already filled with water.  In my defense, those are milk jugs.

I was thinking this year I may use the oil heater as the main source since it is  better on the hydro bill then the others I have, but will have another plugged in as back up since it has a thermostat on it and will turn on if it hits a certain temp.
 
Well maybe I will try the milk jugs as  well since it seems to be pretty popular and would take up less space then rolling in a large drum. Not to mention that digging it out at this point would be a job in its self and not one I would like to undertake with X amount of snow on the ground.

Not yet my friend but its normally like a 7-10 ( business) day shipping on most things from the US so no need to worry. Stuff moves alittle slower to me then the more populated areas of Canada, something we have gotten use to living up here.

Since I have young kids we have several baby bottle cleaners still kicking around and they seems to work great for milk cartons and such....Jugs are alittle different, I give it a good rinse first, next I fill it up with dish soap and water and do that a couple times, then lastly I put a strong dose of bleach and water and let it soak overnight.
 
Like if your going to use the jugs as pots you can just cut them open as well and it easy to just wash them out, but even the milk cartons I give it a soak of bleach overnight just to make sure.
