Mildfruits 2020 hydroponic

Hi all!

This is my second grow blog. You can find the first one here
I bought a lot of new equipment enough to warrant a new grow blog.
Quick intro: Due to lack of outdoor growing space I've had to get creative with indoor growing without soil.

I grow mainly with grodan blocks with automatic watering, from a nutrient tank using masterblend.

Things that have changed from my last glog:
I have bought another tent and light.
I have started growing tomatoes indoor.
New seeds!
Also not mentioned in my last glog, but my lights and fans are controlled by a device called Shelly. Useful in everyday home automation, controllable from your phone with timers and monitoring.

Lets get started with some pictures!

Heres my new tomato light a quantum board from HLG called 100V2. A little brother to my pepper light (quantum board HLG 260W)
IMG-5459.jpg

And here's my tomato tent with the light installed.
IMG-5460.jpg

Heres my two tomatoes, Sugar lump and Muddy waters. Both are indeterminate, meaning they grow forever, so pruning will be necessary.

And now to the interesting part!
A quick before and after of my pepper tent:

Seeds:
This year I have been so lucky to receive some wilds from CaneDog! Lots of cool varieties, more than I can grow unfortunately, but maybe some day!

I also participated in a european seed exchange witch included some seeds from the US, so I also got seeds from Yekanfam Farms also a THP member.

Seeds started:
De Arbol (Fatalliseeds)
Aci Dolma (CaneDog)
Tepin Cappuccino (CaneDog)
C. Flexuosum (CaneDog)
Aji Amarillo (Fatalliseeds)
Pimientos De Gernika (Fatalliseeds)
Rocoto Costa Rica (Fatalliseeds)
Rocoto San Pedro, Orange (Fatalliseeds)
Lemon Starrburst (Yekanfam Farms)
C. Galapagoense

This years theme is challenge. Previously I failed growing Aji Amarillo and C. pubescens varieties, this year I hope to change that!
My list needs to be cut down to 6 so this is not my final list.

I wish everyone a happy grow in 2020!

Btw. A quick non-scientific experiment regarding the chinenses:
My KG LSB and chocolate ghost both seem to not produce pollen when in the grow tent. The same is actually the case for my c. pubescent. However, I tried to move my chocolate ghost into a window which gets approximately 4-6 hours of direct sun each day. Today the flowers are producing pollen! And the humidity is nowhere near the same as in the tent (as in lower). Seems the sun does something for my chinenses that the LED cant seem to reproduce.

IMG-5822.jpg

Cappuccino Tepin first pod!

IMG-5824.jpg

Chocolate ghost producing pollen! Seems sun was the answer for me..

IMG-5833.jpg

My galapagoense is podding up nicely. I wouldn't have thought kratky would be so effective with this pepper.

IMG-5835.jpg

Cappuccino Tepin tagging right along, a few pods have begun to form. Perhaps I should try and cross it with the galapagoense?

IMG-5837.jpg

The Chocolate ghosts are loving the window sun.

IMG-5839.jpg

IMG-5840.jpg

First ripe Aci Dolma! And what a treat this pepper is. I made some pita using this pepper fresh, and wow. The flavor and taste is out of this world! Really glad I grew this one. This one is a pepper everyone should grow!

IMG-5842.jpg

Lastly, my flexousum are actually starting to put out flowers. Happy times

Happy times indeed!  Things are looking great, MF.  That's truly an impressive indoor pod on the AAD.  I'd love to see the results of Galap x Capp Tepin; you could have a Cappuccino Galapagoense in a couple generations!

Chocolate Ghosts are looking gnarly, too.

Well the seeds I was mailed was excellent  ;)  Well I actually cross polinated them and isolated the flower. Fingers crossed that it will stick!

Thanks! That aci dolma is really good! Im more afraid of the ghosts  :P

Mr.joe said:
Yea those ghosts look scary. I wouldn't take a bite of those on purpose
Haha I know, unfortunately I have a rule when growing peppers, I need to "get high on my own supply", or at least try it :D Many times in the past when seconds after that first bite you think "why did I plant and care for this plant so many months?", yet here we are again.

Congrats on the Aci Dolma! I have seeds for that one and made a note to plant some ;)

Those Choco Bhuts are looking good and are gonna burn twice!
You really should, its a really good pepper!

So I tried try cross my Cappuccino Tepin with the Galapagoense, you can see the progress under here. First pic is moments after the attempt. I transferred the pollen to a closed flower on the tepin plant.
IMG-5845.jpg

And a few days later:
IMG-5851.jpg

It seems like it took right away! I don't have any particular goals with this cross, but seemed like a fun project.

IMG-5849.jpg

The Flexuosum have begun to flower, seems like that purple pheno CaneDog had in his growouts are missing from these flowers.

IMG-5850.jpg

The KGS LB have started to ripen, as you can see some of the pods stopped to grow when I got the plant back to my HLG 260 LED. Strange, however I've taken it out of the tent and moved to a sunny window in hopes that it will start it back into action. I tried the smaller pods last night and holy smokes! The taste was actually delicious! I normally am not a big fan of the classic chinense smell and taste, but this was rather good! Very fruity and tropical taste with heat maybe a bit less than a habanero. Pleasantly surprised. This is also the reason I made some changes to make it produce again, I want more of this :D

IMG-5853.jpg

Lastly the "Big beast" aka Aji Amarillo. Despite my weekly attempt to trim it down it keeps setting out pods. Some of them are rather big, I don't have a measurement of them at the moment but longer than my hand which is perhaps 2/3 of a long banana  :P  I hope you appreciate my attempt to follow international measurement standards using bananas.

But the actual point of the photo was to show they finally started to ripen! Last year I made lots of Amarillo paste using peruvian giallo arancio peppers from my last grow. Hope to make a lot this year as well as it goes great in almost everything  ;)

+1 on the great grow, MF.  The hits seem to just keep on coming for you.

Funny, I had only 1 flexuosum from the 7 or so plants I grew last season that showed no purple - that one's still growing as an OW with the best 2 purple ones - so it's the standard flexuosum that's the most "special" to me right now.  Given that anthocyanin is an (incompletely) dominant trait, if you don't see any purple from your plant this season it should be a stable "regular" flexuosum.  I sent you seeds from my most purple plant, but in any case, it seems I'll have to stabilize the purple.  Oddly, I expected the most purple plant to be double dominant, so already stable for the trait.  I guess it bodes well in that needing to stabilizing to a double dominant purple, there's indication a still darker flower may be possible.

Are you planing to cross any more of the galapagoense x tepin?  It strikes me that those small pods don't always produce a ton of seeds and having another pod or two may be good security.

This seems to be what I'm finding comparing Chinense performance in two tents that are identical, but for an HLG100 in one and T5HO in the other.  I've always had great Chinese pod set under the T5's, but in this my first time growing to fruit under the HLG.  It seems they're less inclined to set under the HLG.  Case in point: I have 2 Murupi plants that sprouted together.  I kept one growing under the T5's and moved the other to the HLG tent.  The plants flowered at essentially the same time, but the one remaining under the T5's has set fruit, while the other hasn't yet.  Notably, I've since moved the T5 Murupi over to the HLG tent and it has stalled on setting pods.

My Early Jalapeno is constantly setting pods under my HLG 260w RSPEC. Also, see LEDGardener's post - holy crap. He seems to be running HLG RSPECs, too.

I bet it is!   Looks to me like it might be multiple 100's. Or maybe both.  Hard to see.  I like what he's done replacing the hang wires with ties to increase the available headspace.  I wonder if having such a big canopy and all the water in there helps pod set by increasing humidity.  I've been working with the HLG's only since the beginning of the year, but my pod set results were best when I had lots of plants and it seems intuitive that more wet soil and a better canopy would better hold humidity.  So maybe that's a factor...  I've been really impressed with your and MF's results, but I've also wondered a bit about overpowering.  With my 100 I'm getting highly compact growth and, depending on the plant, some burning even at a good distance.

Hey MF.  How do you see your HLG100v2 and 260 RSPEC compare?  I'll be in the market for another LED before too long and I'm not really sure which way to go.

Good to see pods on the wilds. How would
you rate their size in bananas?
Hahaha you got me there :D I'll have to get a banana to show you

Very interesting about the anthocyanin, I really like when you share that deeper level of pepper knowledge on here! I'll make a note regardless if they turn out purple during the season or if future generations show up purple from seed. I guess thats just another plant you'll have to stabilize :D

What are the difference to the RSPECs light? Im not sure if my HLG 260w are a RSPEC version, Do you have a link to his post? I have mostly followed his youtube.

Great question! I havent been using my HLG100v2 for peppers yet, only on my tomato plant. And as mentioned before, im not sure if my 260w are a RSPEC variant, I do want to mention that my HLG260w are a 4000k variant which might have and impact to fruiting compared to 3000k versions. However this is a non-issue with baccatums and annuums as they make lots and lots of pods. I do however have an issue with superhots under that LED, and I dont thin humidity is the whole story. I say that because in my tent I have constant 60-70% humidity and chinense plants dont seem to thrive well, some lesser hot chinenses (biquinho) make lots of pollen and pods no problem. All superhots make zero pollen, but some when pollienated grow pods fine, others have trouble growing pods to normal size (see my pics with the KGS LB).

When I have the superhots in my livingroom window witch gets a few hours of direct sun each day they make pollen and pods fine, and im inclined to say the humidty is certainly lower, but I must admit I havent been measuring it.
But as I mentioned to podz I need to read up on the newest info regarding LED. Please do share what light you're ending up buying as im sure there have been lots of improvements in the newest versions.

I forgot to answer this one;
You are right! I forgot that I wont be getting many seeds from this variety, so I should proberly do more crossing attempts thanks for reminding me!

The rspec does not come in 3000k or 4000k versions - it is a full spectrum lamp. It has two rows of red LEDs on each board and you can see them shining red when the lamp is on.

Rspec came in version 2 of the 260w lamps - seems that you have the version 1.

Just been reading up on that light and it does seem to be a improvement over my version 1:
The HLG 260 watt kit Version 2 R-Spec Quantum Board with 544 Highest Bin Samsung LM301B LED's and 32 Osram deep red diodes is the most efficient grow light kit on the market. The new R-Spec spectrum will enhance flowering while still being a great all-around light from seed to harvest. Enjoy lower energy cost, less heat and more output, a 4% efficiency gain over the previous model!
R-Spec 3500k + 660nm red- Enhanced Flowering and General Use.

Really curious how that performs vs the version 1. Proberly better for flowering. Does he have a review comparing this light to previous models?
